WEEK 2 (June 1, 2008)
[Author’s note: If this is your first time visiting the UMC blog, you might want to check out the INTRODUCTION first.]
And the winner is…
Alice and the Cooper Gang!
Congratulations you sickos!
Ok, so another good turnout for the UMC Deuce. I’d say, compared to this time last year, we had at least 1/3 more people. Also, a new feature this week was DJ Mac, who played a mostly solid set between each band (although one has to wonder about his decision to put Vanilla Ice into the mix).
We had 5 bands playing tonight: Mario Escovedo Experience (also known as MEX), Alice and the Cooper Gang, The King Bees, The Pop Rox, and Good Mojo.
First of all, let me get this disclaimer out there ASAP. I know Mario personally and am familiar with the music of his former band, The Dragons which was a legendary guitar-and-vocals fueled punk band. I had not seen MEX before, but the first thing I noticed when they started playing was that they couldn’t be more different than the Dragons.
This was classic Tex-Mex music. They opened with some pure American country with “Good Hearted Woman” (via Waylon and Willie) but quickly moved into the “Mex” part of Tex-Mex with, “Adios Mexico,” “Hey Baby Que Paso,” then back to the Lone Star State with “Laredo Rose,” by the Texas Tornados, and finishing the night with a rowdy rendition of La Bamba.
In short, great set list.
They nailed the vibe of the songs, the harmonies were solid, and the accordion went a long way to bring home that spicy Mexas flavor they were going for. I thought the guitar solos were lacking Tabasco but overall the set was good.
I will say, however, that their performance is another example of what I call Venue Disconnectivism – which is when a band just does not quite fit the venue in which they are playing and causes a disconnect between the three prongs of the holy trinity of rock concerts which is: 1) performer 2) audience, and 3) venue.
This is nobody’s fault really, but make no mistake, the room is very much a part of the show. The feel and the vibe of the venue are all integral to the performance.
I guess what I’m saying it that if the Ultimate Music Challenge were held in Rose’s Cantina in El Paso, well thing might’ve been very different.

After MEX, came the Alice Cooper tribute band, Alice and the Cooper Gang who, aside from winning the round last night, also wins the award for Lamest Tribute Band Name. To me, “Alice and the Cooper Gang” sounds like a group of keystone bandits run by their goofy aunt Alice who always bungles the robberies.
There are just so many better options:
- Welcome to Our Nightmare
- Billion Dollar Babies
- The Vincent Furnier Experience (Alice’s real name)
- Malice Cooper
- School’s Out
- Fistful of Alice
- Cold Ethyl
Nonetheless, ACG rocked it! I was at the bar getting a drink when I heard the guitar intro to “Schools Out” slicing through the room. I turned just in time to see “Alice” walk on stage in leather pants, top hat, chain belts and drippy, black eye-shadow approach the mike and bust out the song with a fury.
After “School’s Out,” they played, “I’m Eighteen,” “Billion Dollar Babies,” “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” and “Under My Wheels.”
On a side note, the infamous Big Toe was playing in the Cooper Gang. For those who don’t know, Big Toe has no arms. He plays guitar (and bass) with his feet.
With his feet!
That’s awesome! Big Toe’s got his own band and it’s quite good.
But, still, it was the Alice character who stole the show. He liked to take his crutch and twirl it overhead. At one point he pulled out a sword upon which was skewered a bunch of billion dollar Cooper bucks, which he threw into the crowd. Then, unbelievably, he opened a crate and pulled out a real life Burmese python and wrapped it around his neck (true Alice fans will have noticed it wasn’t an albino Burmese – the snake of choice for the real Alice Cooper – but we won’t hold that against him).
ACG really just brought the style and the ‘tude of Alice to Viejas, and even though this was yet another band that does not necessarily fit the venue, they were just too fun and too smoking not to love.
I will say, I was disappointed that they didn’t do “Cold Ethyl,” but in hindsight, can understand why a song that glorifies necrophilia may not be the perfect feel-good casino lounge song.
“We met, last night, making love by the refrigerator light.”
Yeah, um no — best to avoid that one.
When the band was finished the room erupted with a cheer. I’d say, biggest audience response so far this year.
Next came the King Bees.
They were terrible. Sorry.
They had some interesting song choices, including a cover of one of the best Thin Lizzy songs nobody’s ever heard of called, “Cowboy Song,” which would’ve been awesome had the vocalists not had dry, raw sticks of spaghetti where their vocal chords should’ve been.
During the judges comments, I said, “Look guys, it’s a real treat to hear somebody cover a Thin Lizzy song that isn’t, “The Boys are Back in Town” but you guys are in a dire need of a vocalist.”
After that it was Pop Rox, who clearly wins the award for sounding most like their band name. They played Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)”, and an obscure song by Republica called, “Ready to Go,” and “Jesse’s Girl”, “Take on Me,” and “Vacation” by the GoGos.
The male singer came out in a long, green pastel robe and the female singer in frilly pink bubble gum skirt, black knee-highs and a pink bra under a see through mesh shirt.
They were good but they rushed it, especially “Take on Me,” which they nailed vocally (not easy to do) but were playing it at damn near twice the tempo. Still, the set wasn’t bad at all AND, the pink-skirted lead singer-babe gave me some packets of Pop Rocks afterward in a blatant attempt to sway my vote.
It worked. I scored her a 10 on the “Best Edible Gift Given To a Judge by a Band Member in Order to Sway His Vote,” category.
Incidentally, Pop Rox is an example of a band that was in perfect sync with the room. The vibe really worked to their advantage and, except for the tempo and some minor vocal issues, really gave Alice and his novelty serpent a run for their money.
After that was Good Mojo
Another fine band which also had a connect with the room. They opened (I think) with “I Love Rock and Roll,” followed by a country song I didn’t recognize. The minute the country song began, the dance floor filled with line dancers.
(Which reminds me, I’ve got a question for you country dancers out there: “Wottup with the line dance? It’s the same move over and over and over again. Can somebody please explain the attraction to that dance?)
After the country song, they did Sweet Child of Mine and that’s pretty much where it fell apart for Good Mojo. First of all, that part in the song where Axel goes off vocally, howling and moaning and screaming, “aii-yi-yi=yi” and “where do we go-ooo, sweet chi-i-i-ld of –my-i-i-ine” etc.
Well, listening to the Good Mojo singer sing this part was like listening to the amplification of two Styrofoam cups mating in an alley.
That is not a lightweight vocal part. You have to be a top notch singer to tackle it and even then it’s risky. because you basically have two choices when you sing it: fail miserably and look stupid, or nail it and be the hero.
Secondly, and more importantly, I think it should be illegal for females to sing “Sweet Child O Mine”. With the Exception of the occasional drunken karaoke night, this should be a crime.
Look, I’m not saying that a woman who covers Sweet Child should do serious jail time. I’m not a total sexist jerk. I’m thinking easy time, 3 or 4 months perhaps, plus some community service is all.
Ah but I kid the Good Mojos. They were pretty good. They pulled it back together for their (I think) finale, which was – are you ready for this? – It was a cover of Thin Lizzy’s, “THE BOY’S ARE BACK IN TOWN.” I laughed when they played it, but, it didn’t suck at all.

“Alice and the Cooper gang” comes from the film Good to See You Again, Alice Cooper: Live 1973.
btw, I became a big Alice fan when an 8-track of his hits got stuck in my Ford Pinto. I couln’t get it out but it continued to play. (true story)

I’d like to extend an unofficial “Thank You” from Good Mojo for allowing us to be part of the Ultimate Music Challenge 2. Last night was a tremendous blast and a little bit surreal for us. It went by so fast it doesn’t seem like I remember playing a single note.
I love your comment on Cowboy Song. I’ve been trying to get that one in Mojo’s set list since our very beginning.
I was floored when I heard it backstage as we were loading in. I was afraid they were going to lead into Boys Are Back with it ala ‘Live and Dangerous’!
As far as Sweet Child goes, I’ll have to disagree with you . YouTube is littered with clips of guys absolutely murdering the vocals on this song and more often than not it’s the girls who get it right. Of course I’m biased, but I feel our singer does a very admirable job with an extremely difficult song to perform.
Hey and at least we didn’t bust out the Sheryl Crow version!
Congratulations to Alice and the Cooper Gang, you guys definitely delivered last night, very tight set. And thanks to all the other bands, you were all great and played some amazing stuff and we were very concerned about having to go on after you!
And finally best of luck to all the bands competing in the next rounds of the Ultimate Music Challenge. I can say no matter what the outcome is you will definitely enjoy the experience.

Another tribute band??? Alice Cooper?? Yeah right, I’m going to take my
girlfriend to 4 hours of dancing to Alice Cooper at the Dreamcatcher.
Better yet, how about 4 hours of dancing to Beatles music. Give us a
break. Last year..Johnny Cash and now???
I thought you were going to hire a dance band for us to dance to. Does
Viejas really know what you ” Judges” are doing??
Heck, for a chance at $20,000, I’ll stop dancing and start my own
tribute band. I wonder if anyone has started a Herman’s Hermits tribute
band yet????
June 3, 2008 at 5:11 am
Hey Edwin,
I’m the talent manager for the Pop Rox (I was the non-costumed band member up there during load-in desperately taping too many cables to the stage). I have to say, first of all, I remember reading your Sordid Tales column way back before City Beat took over that other music paper, sorry can’t recall the name of it now but I used to read you every week, man. You’re a great writer.
Anyway, I have to set the record straight on the Pop Rox show. Just because these guys really deserve it – they work very hard and they’re all consummate pros. The tempo on Take On Me was a mistake, and it wasn’t because they’re tempo-challenged. We have a sequencer that they were supposed to use on three of the six songs we planned (one of them they didn’t end up having time for). However, during the speedy setup, someone forgot to turn the sequencer up to the appropriate volume. So, they turned it on for the first song, couldn’t hear it, but played without it. Then, after Vacation, when it was time to turn it back on, the next song on the list was Tenderness (by Public General) – but because they couldn’t hear the sequencer, they accidentally started playing Take On Me. Tenderness is clocked at 10 beats per minute faster than Take On Me, so while it might have felt twice as fast, it was really just a little faster than comfortable. Props to the drummer for keeping up
Thanks for letting us play, and the nice comments. We look forward to playing that room again in the future.

oh c’mon!!! this is freak’n un-real I would have taken POP ROCKS over them any day I couldn’t understand a word that the guy said let alone bare to look at him …..then again i dont think Alice cooper is that great either but man ………but I must say the only thing that band had going for them was that one guy that could flat rock out using his feet on that guitar …..he was the best part of that band …….other than that they were just noise
June 3, 2008 at 3:23 pm
I’m the bassist for Good Mojo. First, I would like to unofficially thank Viejas, Jack FM and the judges for the opportunity to play in the UMC-2, along with some great bands. I had a blast and wanted to keep playing long after our 20 minutes. Sorry that I missed “Help” last week, as I love the Beatles and according to Ed, they were really good.
Secondly, congrats to “Alice and The Cooper Gang” for making it to the next round. You guys are really tight and obviously love playing. Your set was great. I enjoyed hanging out afterwards and chatting with Big Toe and “Alice”, along with members from “Hot Flash” and “Rockslide”, both of whom will be playing on July 13th.
I agree with some of the judges’ comments, but have to disagree as well. Clothing continues to be a point of contention between the judges and the bands. How is a cover band whose repertoire ranges from the 60’s to the present supposed to dress? I can understand that for tribute bands. Great costumes and make-up by The Cooper gang, by the way. For a themed cover band that plays for example all 80’s music, such as “The Pop Rox”, then they were dressed great as well.
Props to the “Rox” by the way. I thought they sounded great and would go to see/hear them to dance anytime. No disrespect intended to “Alice and The Cooper Gang”, but I think they are more of a concert/show band, with whom I would enjoy spending an hour. But if it’s going to be a night of dancing, well it would be someone like the “Rox”, or someone like “Good Mojo.” Okay, I’m a little prejudiced there.
Oh yeah, I think Rachel ROCKS on “Sweet Child o’ Mine”, not to mention Long Hair Chris absolutely SHREDS on that song!!! Thanks for letting me ramble on. Ed, sorry we made you laugh when we played “The Boys Are Back In Town”, but it seems to me that the crowd enjoyed it. I know LHC is a huge fan and would love to play “The Cowboy Song”, but unless someone is a die hard “Thin Lizzy” fan, they probably have never heard that song and therefore would not dance to it.
Once again, thank you to Viejas and Jack FM for the opportunity to play. Thank you to the crowd for the support and cheering, which was VERY loud. Thank you to the judges. Thank you to the other bands for their kind words and support, and good luck to “Alice and The Cooper Gang” in the next round.
Disclaimer: The opinions expressed above are solely the opinions of the bass player and may not necessarily reflect that of the management,, the sponsors, the judges, the venue, any other member of “Good Mojo”, or probably anyone else on the face of the planet or in this dimension.
June 3, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Oh, back to Ed, I just re-read your comment about us playing “TBABIT”, and saying it didn’t suck. Sorry if I was a little snippy in that comment in my previous rant and rave tirade. My caffiene and meds haven’t kicked all the way in yet. I”m sure you can relate.
June 3, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Comment on Round 2:
Wow, judges…I’m at a loss for words here…I had never heard any of these bands play before, so I was very objective. I had to look up the judging criteria today, to see what’s being looked at. Let’s keep it real…Pop Rocks won that hands-down guys. It seemed like such a let-down. The former accusations of you guys favoring the presentations of tribute bands is starting to become a legitimate suspicion. Alice & The Coopers were good for what they did, but it was obvious that they still were not as tight as they could have been and the vocals need work (although Alice was no great lead singer in the first place). Basically you could probably find them playing in Second Wind or other East county bars (similar to Loss of Control) where less quality is accepted.
The Pop Rocks band had the musicianship, vocals and presentation-OVERALL. The clear winner for that round.
The rest of the bands-the critiques were accurate-you all know where you stand.I’m trying not to give my musical taste/opinion here. I didn’t know any of them, and I didn’t care what genre of music they were playing, I looked at them OVERALL, and Pop Rocks just had a tighter band. The others were not quite ready to put their bands in a competition like this yet. I still can’t see a whole year of the Alice show at Viejas, at least I hope not…I’m looking forward to other opinions from anyone who was also there that night. If I didn’t know better, I’d say the judges were all owners of bars in East county(lol). The other 2 judges were like listening to Paula Abdul, sugar-coating the mistakes and telling them how beautiful they are-I was happy to at least hear you keep it real…
June 3, 2008 at 6:13 pm
The following is a response to the above commenters.
TO ART:
Yeah Art, I can relate for sure. No worries. The reason I laughed was not because it was a bad rendition, but that I had earlier told the the King Bees that it was nice to hear a cover song by Thin Lizzy that wasn’t “The Boys are Back in Town.” When you came out and closed the night with it — well it was worth a chuckle.
I like that song though and you did it well.
As for the costumes, I understand your concern, but that’s just the way it is. If you put a lot of time and money into how you look on stage you will, and should be, rewarded for it. But trust me when I tell you, if you are the better band musically and vocally with a crappy stage appearance, you’re going to beat out the band who is mediocre musically but spent 20k on costumes.
The category just doesn’t have that much weight and the judges know how to be fair about it.
Anyway buddy, thanks for your comments, and thanks for playing UMC Deuce. We enjoyed having you. Stick around.
TO AARON:
Well you’re right, Alice Cooper is not known for his singing ability, he’s known for his theatrics and ability to rock out. I happen to be an Alice Cooper fan and WAS able to hear every word the singer was singing.
Maybe that’s the issue for you, that you don’t like the real Alice’s music at all. And that’s part of the job of the judge – to factor OUT your musical preferences. It’s not easy to do. This week I had no problem factoring out my musical preferences because I liked the genres of all the bands. But I think, if you had done that, if you had taken into consideration that you don’t like AC music, then Pop Rox and the AC Gang were just about even as far as total, overall talent goes. The crowd sure thought so, they gave them both great ovations, but in the end, Alice eeked out the Rox.
TO CHRISTY:
Thanks for setting us straight on the sequencer business. Not that it changes much in my mind about the judging. Seems to me, if you have the advantage of using pre-recorded tracks, then you should also have the disadvantage of managing it on stage. Still, they did recover well AND, as I said, they nailed it vocally. I really dig that tune. Would’ve liked to hear General Public too, but that’s tricks I suppose.
Thanks for the kind words about my column Sordid Tales. The magazine you are referring to is SLAMM. You say you “used to” read it. Did you not know that it’s still in CityBeat? My column is biweekly now (every other week) and you can find Sordid Tales near the front of the paper. Or you can go to my website and read all the columns you missed over the months, or even years.
TO DAVE
Yawwwwwwn. I’m getting tired of this tribute conspiracy theory so many of you seem to have. Let me just ask all you Tribute Band Conspiracy Theorists (TBCTs) a question: If it were tribute bands we were truly looking for, why wouldn’t we just say so? Why wouldn’t we just run a Ultimate Tribute Music Challenge? What is our nefarious intention to pretend that we want miscellaneous cover bands if we really don’t want to.
I’m here as one of the judges telling every single TBCT that we don’t care whether you are tribute or other type of cover. What is so rotten in your souls that you don’t believe me? I think I’ve been pretty candid so far with all this and am just asking you to set aside your innate distrust of authority and just believe the simple truth of what I’ve been saying…
He who rocks best wins. It’s so easy like that.
TO LHC:
You’re right, I went on YouTube – the guys do Sweet Child worse. And yes, thank you thank you a million times thank you for not doing the Sheryl Crow version.

I am the bass palyer, and one of the lead vocalists for “Haute Flash”. It was fun hanging out with Art, fellow bassist from Good Mojo, and members of Pop Rox, Steve, Dave and Kim’s hubbie, Ray. This contest is being professionally run, fairly judged, and seems to be more than fair including all types of bands. What I’ve been reading rings true for me; Viejas is the boss, they call the shots, and they look for what they want. Most bands could not buy this type of promotion. If a band is better off in a concert venue, maybe someone will see them and make it happen for them. If a band uses prerecorded music, they have to deal with the extra problem that brings. (I think that issue should be clearly dealt with as how much pre recorded music is allowed, and who plays on the recording). But it is allowed, and we all have the right to use it. Bottom line for me is; We all play by the rules, use the same equipment, and put our best material forward! The bands that are not as professional are getting great experience and exposure, and the contenders are putting on great shows! There’s something for everybody!
June 3, 2008 at 9:48 pm
I thought Pop Rox would win and even said so to my girlfriend so I was a bit surprised when Alice took it. Looking back though… The Cooper Gang had much more audience interaction and the music was great. The sequencer thing was an obvious mistake and I would say that stopping the last song because of time probably didn’t help.
here’s a link to Van Halen playing Jump! to a playback that is out of tune with the band, too funny…

Ed,
it seems that your adoring public has hit a nerve when you start breaking out the “TBCT” remarks. How can they not so easily come to such a conclusion when history and your current comments prove them right ? A tribute band won last year’s competition despite an extremely difficult field. And this season, two tribute bands have won each of the weekly competitions despite very tough competition. And I distinctly recall, your judging responses for each of these bands started out by raving that “I love the Beatles…or I love Alice Cooper…” even before the remaining competition was completed. As a musician myself, having played for over 30 years, being in a cover band is MUCH MORE DIFFICULT than a tribute band. In a tribute band, you don’t have to expend a lot of brain energy thinking about the band look. All you have to do is watch a few videos to get the costumes and the choreography down. You don’t even have to do that very well as long as you get a few signature moves down that defines the band and the fans can resonate to. As far as the music goes, it’s one style!!! You get a few songs down and most of the time you’re done…because a lot of a band’s songs sound the same. You don’t have any of these advantages in a standard cover band. In order to sound good, your spectrum of abilities must be very much greater than any one genre. As a result, it is my opinion that it is only fair that tribute bands should start in the negative point territory for musicianship and costumes. You can’t possible apply the same scale to tribute and cover bands in this area.
Also Ed, I can’t believe that in your blog, you gave Alice a setlist that you would like to hear. How can such an act not be interpreted as preferential treatment ? You gave them a list that would aid them getting through the semis and finals!! Your own blog stated:
“There are just so many better options:
Welcome to Our Nightmare
Billion Dollar Babies
The Vincent Furnier Experience (Alice’s real name)
Malice Cooper
School’s Out
Fistful of Alice
Cold Ethyl “
Why didn’t you offer such assistance to the other bands ?
In your Week 1 blog you stated: “Keep this in mind when you are rooting for your favorite outfit. The question isn’t just, “Are they the best band,” but, “Are they the best band to play at Viejas for an entire year?”
In your critique of MEX, you also stated (of MEX) that: “…another example of what I call Venue Disconnectivism – which is when a band just does not quite fit the venue in which they are playing…”. Your implication in their evaluation was that they lost out because their style of music did not fit the venue, which tied into your Week 1 statement above.
But then when Alice came along, your evaluation stated: “ACG really just brought the style and the ‘tude of Alice to Viejas, and even though this was yet another band that does not necessarily fit the venue, they were just too fun and too smoking not to love.” It seems too difficult to discount the conspiracy theorists with evidence like this.
To Christy of the Pop Rox:
Yea, I think you got a raw deal but as a musician that has play live for many years, there are no excuses you can give for your hardware problems….shit happens…so deal with it….you’re pros remember? I’m from the old school and don’t believe in pre-recorded music or beats or sequences anyway. You’ve got a drummer…can’t you pros use his beat to keep your music going. I don’t mean to sound harsh but growing up with bands that made ALL of their own music in real-time and then having to hear the likes of Britney Spears and Milli Vanilli makes you really look back and appreciate the true musical accomplishment that these bands achieved and that many cover bands are achieving NOW. It’s my opinion that the silver is a little tarnished when a band isn’t doing it all.
June 4, 2008 at 4:34 pm
I dont believe it. All who bitch on this ultimate music challenge. Viejas will pick a winner who will be right for the Venue, no tribute band will win, cause realistically why did they put this talent show on in the first place, its to get people to come to Viejas to gamble.Pop rocks was great, alice sucked for this venue, it should have been a top 40 group so little girls and boys can chat each other up, cause no one listens to the top 40 bands music its just subliminal hogwash compared to what people really want…..sex
June 4, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Hey Ben, thanks for your comments. I’m going to respond to your comments, then you can have the last word (if you want it):
A) The “nerve” you say that has been hit is not because, as you insinuated, the accusations of Tribute preference are true, but because you refuse to believe me/us when I say we don’t favor tribute bands. I’m really just kind of shocked that this, among all the legit issues to gripe about, is the one people are focusing on. I ask again, what is our motivation to lie?
B) Your history lesson is anecdotal. Last week Help! (tribute band) beat out the Stilettos (non tribute) by a half a point. This week Alice Cooper Gang won by a very slim margin over Pop Rox. One missed guitar solo or harmony could’ve changed everything. It could’ve easily have been Stilettos and Pop Rox as winners and then I’d have to field emails from angry tribute bands hollering about the inequity of it all.
As for last year, of the four bands that made it into the finals, only one (Cash’d Out) was a tribute band. AND all four of the judges felt, going into the finals, that they were the underdogs by a wide margin. However, on the night of the finals, Lady Dottie and Detroit just did not bring it. They were fantastic in early rounds, but limped into the finals for some reason. Cash’d Out on the other hand was damn near flawless.
C) Yes, I love the Beatles, and yes, I love Alice Cooper – and try as I might to factor that OUT of the judging it is entirely possible that somewhere in the core of my being they had an advantage because of it.
But keep in mind, this only goes to disprove your Tribute Band Conspiracy Theory. Because, If a tribute band is covering a group I don’t like, or hate even, then by your reasoning, they don’t have a shot.
Also, if you remember, I also wrote how much I liked the other band’s genres – like Pop Rox. With the exception of the obscure Republica song, I LOVED every song in their set every bit as much as I liked the Alice Cooper/Beatles songs. (Really just can’t get enough of that “Take on Me” shit).
So you see, your argument goes to the judge’s musical preference and not to whether we favor tribute bands. And as far as our musical preferences go, we try very hard to factor that out . I think I succeed at it – but how would I know? Keep in mind also their are three different judges with three different musical preferences.
D) It doesn’t matter if tribute band music is easier to play than general cover music. What matters is which sounds and looks better. For instance, I happen to know it’s harder for a band to play with a sequencer. Sequencers don’t give and take like living musicians do, so it’s more difficult to correct yourself seamlessly on stage when using one. But I’m not going to give a band MORE points because they use one.
E) The Alice Cooper set list? Huh, what? You can’t be serious. First of all, they are not all songs. Secondly, I picked those as possible names for the band based on how cool they might sound as band names. IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A JOKE. You can’t really think that I sent them a secret message of which songs to play to give them an advantage? If you did, that would make you an SLCCT (Set List Collusion Conspiracy Theorist).
C’mon Ben, don’t you think you’re nitpicking here? Same with the Venue Disconnectivism – yeah, in general we’re looking for someone to play the venue, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to totally discredit somebody who’s not quite right for it but is still an awesome band. These are just the things we factor in. Otherwise, there’d be no reason for any non-casino type bands to enter in the first place. I’m still judging based on the merits of the band, then there is the other judges to factor in, and the crowd etc. It’s just not a cut and dry process and that’s what I wish you would keep in mind my dear TBCT and SLCCT friend – we’re not perfect, but we aim for it – as impossible as that is.

Hi Ben…
Thanks for your comments on how REAL men don’t use sequences… hopefully you read my whole comment so you know the Pop Rox ended up doing the whole set without any sequences. It’s not a big deal! They only use it for about 10% of their songs usually, and it actually makes up for another keyboard player, not the drummer. They play without it all the time.
And Edwin, dear, yes it was SLAMM and I just never read City Beat after that because the format was so different and I am resistant to change. So I guess I’ve missed roughly 8 years of your hilarious column. I’ll have to catch up.
See you on the 15th; I also manage The Xceptions.

To all future bands ! If u don’t want me to play one of your songs please e mail me a copy of play list or bring me a copy on the night you are to play.
As for ice ice baby maybe it would be better to start each and all my sets with it. Lol.
Now for all the babies , This is a $20,000 for first prize. If u expect to make it and move on, u need to BRING IT ! One little mistake u might be done.
The judges are 100% professional and will pick the very best overall band of the night.
Thanks DJ Mac

Hey Ed,
I think Bobbie might have meant to update the “This Weeks Bands” list on the front page of the website. Also, it might be a nice touch to plug in the bands name instead of “winning band” each week. You know, a little extra pat on the back for the winners.

Hey all, Our band LIFELIKE will be closing out the evening on June 22, and are really looking forward to it. We are a 3 piece rock and roll band who spans the musical r&r globe.
We were in last year on a last minute cancellation and didn’t know what to expect. I was wondering , could i bring my own snare and stand and hihats?? i was having trouble with last years kit… It didn’t help that the stage manager didn’t want me to play them before we actually started our set.
I’ll be there this sunday to check out the show and to win some cash at blackjack… Please advise on the snare situation Thanks, Paulie
June 5, 2008 at 10:29 pm
hmm… from what I can see it’s listing still all the ones that played this past Sunday. My friends and I are all heading out and just wanted to have an idea of who we would be seeing.
June 5, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Try this link, it lists the line up for all weeks of round one…

Thanks Shaaron and Bobby for pointing that out. I don’t know how I missed it. Sorry.
Ok, here’s the deal. We’re gonna get a little help with the website so expect those changes soon, possibly by tomorrow.
Sorry about that. As you probably guessed, everyone’s pretty busy putting the actual show together so there isn’t much time left to work on the tangentials to the show. So stay tuned for upcoming changes.
In the meantime, if you want to see the band schedule, dates, just click on “dates” on the menu bar on top. That’s the area I thought you were talking about, and why I said it was all current. Sorry ’bout that.
As for your question Paulie about hihats, the production manager checks in on these pages too so we’ll just wait for him to respond. Remind me if you don’t hear back about this. I check every post.

could you please spotligt the bands for june 8th
June 7, 2008 at 4:16 pm
The UMC website still shows that last weeks bands are the bands playing this week. What a joke! Who runs this rinky dink website. Viejas should take a little bit from the prize money and run the website and keep it updated. Someone on here said that the person who runs this site is too busy doing other UMC related tasks in regards to the performances on Sunday night. Delegate someone else to do the website then, HELLO-MCFLY-THE LIGHTS ARE ON BUT NOBODY IS HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 7, 2008 at 5:27 pm
hi. i’m the guy who updates the website. it’ll be updated today and then every monday thereafter…sorry. nothing personal.

Ed, Ed, Ed….
How can you be so resistant to learning? There IS a difference between a cover and a tribute band! BTW everything Ben said was so true and was just what I wanted to say also. Ed—- reread what Ben had to say, but this time with an open, ready to be educated mind!
BTW — Alice… congrats guys… you are an AWESOME tribute band! Good luck in the semi-finals.
Jason — we will all be watching to see the new and improved website! I too was wondering if the best COVER band, “Good Mojo” from last Sunday was going to play again.
And one more comment to Ed regarding the line dancing. It’s fun! And it’s harder than it looks. Let’s see you out there doing the dance~~ see you Sunday…
June 8, 2008 at 3:12 am
Of course there is a difference, that’s why they have different names… “cover” “tribute”. Both are judged as equal here.
In this contest you get one shot to move on and if you don’t make it through a round… well, there’s next year I suppose.
If I’m not mistaken Pop Rox came in second last week over Good Mojo so I suppose that blows your theory colleen.
June 8, 2008 at 5:00 pm
ok. the website is updated. from this point forward i will take all of my vitamins, get plenty of rest, and update the website regularly.
paulie – sorry man, but no. you have to use our gear just like everyone else. if it sucks for you, it sucks for everybody and vice versa. although our gear doesn’t suck…
this whole tribute vs. cover thing is giving me angina.
June 8, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Jason,
Thanks for the reply. What’s the chance of getting all the band links and promo pics up on the site? It was kind of promised to everyone. It sounds like you are spread kind of thin and it might not even be your fault but it still needs to be done. Again thanks for responing to me and letting us know things will be better with the site
June 8, 2008 at 5:47 pm
Hi Jason,
The Band Spotlight area on the front page of the UMC page, still spotlights last week’s bands.
UMC Fan; Great idea to get all the links up. If anyone wants to check out my band, the spelling on the “dates” list is wrong. We are “Haute Flash”. At the risk of being shamelessly self promoting, it’s http://www.hauteflash.biz. In a few days we will also have http://www.hauteflash.net.
I will be there tonight to check out all the bands, and try my luck on a machine or two!
June 8, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Last night Huate flash dropped out of our competetion, stating they “prefer a female audiance”.
June 9, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Hey JamminSammic, your right about this talent show! Heck, it’s a lot like American Idol, it’s not really a talent show but a popularity contest and what’s right for the casino. I agree that a tribute band would have a hard time playing 4 sets in a night and remain intertaining.
I do disagree with that knucklehead who thinks playing in a cover band takes more talent! I’ve done both and I didn’t lose any skills going from a cover band to tribute band. Took a lot of work to get it right in sound, style and looks. This is something a caover band doesn’t even bother with!
What a knucklehead that guy is!
It’s all good and for crying out loud people, it’s just music!
June 9, 2008 at 6:11 pm
Hey guys,
I’ve been in a tribute bands, “Koko Loco”, (a Jimmy Buffett tribute, and Rock and Roll Heaven, tribute to Janis Joplin), originals, and cover bands. The cover bands present the biggest challenge in several areas. First you have to cop several different musical styles, get the vocals right, and present a band image. Getting a band to agree on almost anything is a job in it’s self! A good cover band can do requests from jazz, pop, funk, lounge, & metal, and still hold down the dancers.
BTW, I did check out the bands last night, and 6one9 was terrific! They were the best at what they do! Then I tried my luck at a machine, and I won $200. Life is good.
June 9, 2008 at 6:20 pm
Hey Colleen, yes, I realize there is a difference between tribute and variety cover bands. I’m only stating there is no advantage or preference from a judging perspective for tribute bands.
June 9, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Hey Joe,
What you doin’ with that blog in your hand? “Haute Flash” did not drop out of the contest! Are you worried about something?
June 9, 2008 at 8:03 pm
A quick question here….
The judging criteria for audience participation has a catagory for online voting.
How doeas that work?
The winners are announced the night of each show.
Is there a online pre-vote or does the audience bring laptops and PDA’s to the show?!?
I need the skinny!
June 9, 2008 at 10:24 pm
From what I’ve been told, the online voting thing was not brought back this year. The way it worked last year was, if there was a tie, they would go by online votes – but I think that’s been yanked.

To DJ Mac,
My band will be playing on June 15th. You say in a comment to email you a set list, but what is your email address?
June 10, 2008 at 4:35 am
So, it’s Monday… where is the review you promised? Last night was really fun and exciting. I’m definitely coming back next week.
June 10, 2008 at 4:43 am
