Week 3 (June 8)

[Author's Note: [Author’s note: If this is your first time visiting the UMC blog, you might want to check out the INTRODUCTION first.]

And the winner is…

6one9!

Congratulations.

““““““““““““““““““““““

Thanks to all the bands who played and all the people who ventured out. It was another great turnout for the Ultimate Music Challenge at DreamCatcher lounge in Viejas. Props to all the bands for bringing their people.

The judges had an extremely difficult time selecting a winner this week. And the reason is because there weren’t any tribute bands to whom we could just hand over the victory. Our only choices were boring old variety cover bands and we judges just didn’t know what to do.

HA! But I kid the TCBT’s

All joking aside, I have to say, the caliber of bands to this point has been truly impressive, and last night was no exception. It actually kind of sucks for the judges because we don’t have anyone to bag on, which is, to be totally honest, the best part about being a judge.

The night began with this week’s champs, 6ONE9 who won despite the fact that 6ONE9 is yet another example of an exquisitely awful band name. This whole area code trend you see on T-shirts and hats and band flyers is just a little too gangster for my liking. But hey, at least they’re not called 8FIVE8, which is clearly the red-headed step bastard of band name area codes.

All of this ceased to matter the minute they burst into song, opening with “My Own Worst Enemy,” and instantly waking the entire room up with a splash of vibrant, raw rock and roll. Even more impressive was the rush to the dance floor, which instantly filled with mostly young hot party girls – which is unheard of in the rock club circuit, where the only person who dares mount a dance floor before the booze starts kicking in is that creepy, ancient hippy gal with the flowing gypsy garb and suede fringes who dances with her eyes closed to a totally different band that only she can hear in her mind.

Second song was “Beautiful Girls” (Van Halen) which rocked quite well but it wasn’t until they kicked into “Metal Health” (Quiet Riot) – when we all knew for sure that rock and roll was truly happening here. Man they nailed that song, vocally and musically. After that, it was “Dead or Alive” (Bon Jovi) and “Round and Round” (Ratt) and the night was off and running. For the judge’s comments, I told them they were going to be a tough act to follow - which, as it turned out, was entirely true

Next band was Jump Start – which was your classic, classic-rock cover band. They were pretty flawless as far as harmonies and musicianship goes and as Jaime Valle (Judge #1) said, “They had the best dynamics of everybody.” (Jaime’s big on dynamics). The singer, who was a stylistic cross between Janis Joplin and Joe Cocker, had a strong vocal showing. I also loved the lead guitarist, who blistered the solos and who probably got the best tone of all the guitars of the night, but they just didn’t have the energy level of 6ONE9, or the audience participation, which probably was the difference between winning and losing.

I mostly dug their set list. They opened with the harmony-heavy “When Will I Be Loved” (Linda Rondstadt) and banged out the harmonies flawlessly. The vibe was really hot at that moment but then, for some reason, instead of capitalizing on the momentum, they played a slow tempo song (which I didn’t recognize) that just knocked the crowd right out of it. It took them a song and half to bring the crowd back. (“Me and Bobby McGee” and “All Day and All of the Night”). To close the night they took a risk with an almost-acappela version Janis Joplin’s “Mercede’s Benz.”

I say almost-acappela because the drummer used his kick drum (technically speaking acappela is 100 percent vocal) but it was still acappela-style and a big gamble on which to end the set (due to the down tempo nature) but it fully paid off because, again, the harmonies and lead vocals were beautiful and went a long way to bring home the dynamic range that Jaime is always looking for. In short, it was fantastic cover of a song I don’t even like. In fact, I can say it was the best version I have ever heard. Seriously.

Next came Inside Out – a10ish piece band with full horn section.

They played last year and did a whole bunch of Journey covers, probably because the male singer’s voice sounds a lot like Steve Perry’s. They had a rough start last night though. Especially the two female vocalists, who — while they did look quite scrump-delickety-licious — were just not competent singers. They were all over the place pitch-wise, their high notes were too thin and tinny and a couple of times there I thought the sustains were going to strip the lacquer off the dance floor.

We all thought they were a little too “wedding band” for our liking and one person in the audience told me she was waiting for the moment when they were going to throw the bouquet.

Ouch girl. That’s cold.

Speaking of cold, the next band was Cold Shower. I don’t know how the other judges ranked them, but they were a close, close second by my tally. The only reason they didn’t come out on top was because it took a little too long to amp up the set. They started with “King Contrary Man” (The Cult), then “Cracker Man” (Stone Temple Pilots) and then an oldie by Fleetwood Mac called “Oh Well” from their blues era when they were lead by guitarist Peter Green.

Not to say any of this was bad, it’s just, when they got to the middle of the set, and played “Have a Cigar” (Pink Floyd) well, as I said before, that was when we all knew rock and roll was happening. After that was “Paranoid” (Black Sabbath), and “Bulls on Parade” (Rage Against the Machine) which brought the set to a stunning and intense conclusion and had, again, brought the room back to life.

During the performance, the singer kept sticking his tongue out, taking different rock star poses, and bulging his eyeballs. During the judge’s comments I said, “I thought you guys were really really good but I could do without the tongue exercises, and the slightly excessive rock posturing, and the bulging Ozzie eyes were a bit over the top. But I dig the fact that you rock hard and worship Satan.

The singer didn’t seem to like the Satan comment, but they did cover the Black Sabbath tune and “King Contrary Man” is a song about selling your soul to the devil so, what’s a brutha to think?

Last up was Five Miles High. There was really nothing wrong with these guys except that they were going against some stiff competition. They just didn’t bring it quite as much as 6ONE9, Jump Start, and Cold Shower did. Their set list was, “Superstition” (Stevie Wonder), “Play That Funky Music” (Wild Cherry) “Word Up” (Cameo), “Can’t Get Enough,” (Bad Company), “All the Small Things” (Blink 182) and the intro to “Rocky Mountain Way” (Joe Walsh).

Ok, “Superstition,” is a great song but man I gotta tell you, between DJ Mac playing Vanilla Ice every week, and the amount of times we judges are no doubt going to hear, “Play that Funky Music” – I might just lose my mind.

As for “Word Up,” well that song is just silly.

“Wave your hands in the air like you don’t care,
glide by the People as they start to look and stare.
Do you dance, do your dance quick
Mama, come on baby,

tell me what’s the Word, ah – word up…

Word up, it’s the code word,
No matter where you say it,
You’ll know that you’ll be heard.”

(I wonder which Starbucks the songwriter was sitting in when he wrote those lyrics)

Normally, with cover bands, I enjoy eclectic set lists, but when they were playing the funk and soul, it wasn’t quite jibing with their vibe. It wasn’t until they got into the straight rock and roll that they started pumping on all pistons. The Bad Company and Blink songs were great, and Rocky Mountain Way was on its way to being a fantastic jam. Alas, they ran out of time so they only played the intro.

Overall, a better than average set, just not quite as good as some of the others.

So that’s it for Week 3 of the Ultimate Music Challenge, except to shout out a quick bollocks to DJ Mac – who refuses to stop playing Vanilla Ice, despite the damage he knows it inflicts on my psyche. If he keeps it up, I’m going to bring in my copy of the Vanilla Ice Autobiography, Ice by Ice and read passages of it during the set breaks.

Don’t tempt me pal!

  1. UMC Fan Says:

I see the UMC website wasnt updated Monday as promised so Im guessing it will be updated the day before next Sunday like last week. Still no links to any of the bands websites! Part of the fun before Sunday is to visit the bands websites to see what they are about before thay take the stage. Empty Promises by Viejas. Good luck on collecting $20,000 for the band that wins?

  2. Hey, UMC Fan?

You’re lucky your disparaging remarks even made it to the blog at all! A comment I posted yesterday morning (offering to help out with the web site updating), was deleted by the moderator….I wonder who that could be??? Kinda makes you wonder if there IS a conspiracy going on (just kidding Ed, don’t get your knickers in a twist!!)

Anyway, HUGE congrats to 6ONE9 for winning this round of the battle! You guys are my favorite band idiots!! ;)

Is someone gonna fix the time stamp on this blog?

  3. 6one9 ROCKED the house! The energy was amazing and, like always they were on FIRE! BTW, 6one9 has been around for years and I happen to love the name! (But if that was your only complaint, no problem…)

The venue is great ~ I was impressed at how quickly the bands came on and that the last band performed on time! It made the night more exciting and it didn’t feel like we were waiting around all night like I was afraid it would. The lighting rocked and so did the sound system.

I’m coming back next week and can’t wait for the semi-finals! Rock and Roll Babay!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. 1st of all, you are really, really funny. From the “worship Satan” remark to the 858 red headed step bastard comment, you are a comedic genius. Pretty dead on w/ your critique too. As far as the other 2 judges, the girl is very beautiful and accurate with her constructive critisism. The other guy-judge spoke way over my head and was a little difficult to understand. (Maybe it was his accent or maybe it was my intake of alcohol) but he seemed hard to follow. Lastly, just to add to the positive 619 report, I have seen them do their 5 hour shows on many occasions and I’ve got to tell you, that enthusiasm and power that they posess is present from the 1st song to the last. They always give 110% and go the extra mile to make their audience feel as though they are playing just for them. Their fans obvious volume of mania reflects 619’s passion.

  5. Greg (619) Says:

Hey, didn’t we start the whole area code trend?!? LOL

  6. I’m one of the Daves from JumpStart. I want to echo what patti just said, the venue is awsome! I’ve been to the first two weeks and really enjoyed the show each time… and from a performers perspective I gotta hand it to Viejas, you guys really made us feel like rock stars! Special nod to Casey the stage manager, very professional and never too busy to help out.

6one9 really brought it big with their fans! I started out their set in the back and even from the dressing room behind the stage the crowd was LOUD. Their fans were very nice to us too so we appreciate that. We had a tough time getting our crowd from Coronado up to Alpine but thanks to our one fan for showing up… ha ha, jk

I was looking forward to the critique and was very happy with your responses. None of the critical comments were a surprise. The second song (the slow one) was a stratigic choice that didn’t pay off. The idea was to show some musical versitility and although it is obscure I was hoping that the judges would recognize it.

Willin’ by Lowell George of Little Feat. Although it never became a big hit it sort of has a strong cult following …and Linda Rondstadt covered it so there was some sort of logic there. I like the song because it’s lovely and sweet but he’s singing about a truck driver negotiating with a hitchiker chick for a ride. He will be willin’ if she ponies up some “weed, whites and wine and then you show me a sign…”

A suggestion to you bands that haven’t played yet. Edwin has detailed the way you will be judged in the intro blog here. Every single thing mentioned will get a numerical score. Take a moment to read it. Good luck and keep rockin’!

  7. Jona Mink Says:

Just outta curiousity, would you be able to tell us what the decibel readings were for each band? I left shortly after 619 performed and was just wondering if anyone came close to their insanely loud cheers, lol.

Oh … and on a side note, just wanted to let you know that I have immensely enjoyed reading your blogs week after week (you crack me the F up!). I find your reviews to be highly entertaining and extremely informative. Keep up the good work!

  8. Viejas Vixen Says:

I have to say that I needed a Cold Shower after they hit the stage! I don’t get that you think they started out slow. Hair was flyin and they were rocking hard from the get-go. Correction- they didn’t play “Paranoid”, they incorporated “Warpigs” and Zeppelin in to the Fleetwood Mac song which is quite creative, if ya ask me. Cold Shower knows how to put their own spin on songs as demonstrated with their cool version of “Have a Cigar”. Thank God they don’t play the same old cover songs every other band plays. They play the songs that kick ass! (plus they’re hot!)

  9. Since I don’t see links for the bands up yet, it anyone wants to check us out see http://monstersofrockband.com or http://myspace.com/monstersofrock. Congrats 619.

  10. I would have had a hard time picking only one band to cheer for to be honest. I’ve seen 619, Inside Out, and 5 Miles High on SEVERAL occasions, and they’re all buddies. (Hey, everyone knows it’s a small world when you’re a musician.)

Much love to ALL of the guys who performed – it’s a big deal to play in a room like Dreamcatcher.

But, me prediction of 2 weeks ago was nuts on – 619 rocked the roof off of the place. If this show is ANYTHING like most of their 5 hour shows, they killed. Considering the band only had 5 songs to play, funneling all of that energy from 5 hours to 5 songs….that must’ve been LOUD.

-The World’s Greatest Limpin’ Wannabe Rockstar

  11. Congratulations to 6one9 who rocked the house right out of the chute and a loyal fan base that was AWESOME. My heart still belongs to Jumpstart (yes, I was the one fan who drove the one mile to be there) Thanks for the plug Lil Dave. Critiques were rough but fair and I think everybody had a rockin’ good time. Erin

  12. Links for the bands are up… mostly.

Although I’m not in charge of the website I happen to know that if you send (or resend) any materials for the band links pages to this email address it will have a good chance of getting posted by the web guy.

    graphicdav@yahoo.com

(he’s not the web guy either so be nice to him) :)

  13. This venue is GREAT!!! The people really go out and support!! I loved cold shower! Congrats 619 on the victory! I am definately looking forward the Anger is A GIft show on the 22nd.. They’re a Rage Against The Machine Tribute band that really WILL bring the house down!! They’re AWESOME!!!!! Cold Shower gave a great BUlls on Parade, but A.I.A.G will fucking blow your mind!!!

  14. good god. miss one day and everyone freaks out. the site is updated, go check it out.

  15. btw a big thanks to graphic dave for the website assistance. you’re a rockstar buddy!

  16. idondthinkanybodyinthisbandhassoldtheirsoulforrockandrolltheyjustmanagetostealthesoulsofthosewhoarewitnesstoapuretributetorockandrollpleasuredbyyourcandorcalluswhentourreaddyforacoldoneGODBLESS

  17. How do we get to the links for the bands?

  18. maybe you didn’t sell your soul to satan, but you clearly sold your space key. For some reason, Satan, the rest of your post has been obscured. I can see it in the admin area, but out here it’s been lopped off.

  19. Ed — congrats on being able to keep an open mind and being able to pick a COVER band for a change!! :-)
It’s kinda scary that 6one9 was both our favorite pick… but you missed #2. 5 miles high was most definately the close second. Although I’m really glad it was you guys having to pick, because for me there was a 4 way tie.
Viejas… the bands this year are so much better! You’ve made the judges really have to work this year!
Kudos to all the Viejas sound, lighting and tech crews. You guys really enhance the performance of ALL the bands!!
Looking forward to next Sunday. Ed… keep your open mind!

  20. Colleen, I am going to have to take credit for producing the lime up this year. Although we had a great selection of entries, somebody still has to screen these crazy people.
Thanks to all the fans and performers, it’s because of you we are able to make this event possible, (you’re the ones who buy the booze and go and gamble) :)

  21. I’m the drummer for cold shower , just wanted to say thanks to Viejas for
having us on , we had a great time and are enjoying seeing the talent that S.D. offers. congrats to the bands that made it to the next round and hopefully we’ll see each other where ever it is we all play out at.
Also to our fans that came out to support us , it”s pretty hard for a band to have people come out on Sunday nights, but you all did and we thank you for that , you rallied around the family!!!!!!

Good luck to A.I.A.G. (and thanks for the props)

  22. ok, I think I’ve fixed the time stamp, thanks Debstah.

  23. Cudos to all bands who played this week. Very good turn out. See everyone this sunday !
    DJ Mac

  24. Hey guys, thanks for your comments. Allow me to respond to some of your questions and critiques.

UMC FAN: were you always a snotty little complainer, or is that just something we bring out in you.

Debstah: Don’t knock it, having your knickers in a bunch can be quite a turn on

Sharon: go to the main UMC page (http://ultimatemusicchallenge.com/) and click on “Dates”

Raea: Jaime Valle has an incredibly thorough understanding of music and music making. He impresses me every Sunday. Danielle does too. They’re both musicians and understand the language as well as the science of music. I’m pretty much just a music fan. I know what I like and I know how to spot it. I think having me on the panel really rounds it out since I bring the regular guy perspective to judging.

Jona Mink: The decibel rankings on the “Loudness Meter,” as our MC Michelle likes to call it, are as follows:

    6ONE9 – 118.2
    5 Miles High – 114
    Cold Shower – 110.8
    Inside Out – 110.6
    Jump Start – 105.6

Armando: Danielle and I met the Rage tribute band waiting for our cars at Valet. The singer totally looked like Zack de la Rocha. Can’t wait to see them, although, Rage being the kind of band it is – there is high percentage of possible suckage for anyone who tries to cover them. Even when Cold Shower started playing Bulls on Parade I was like, “uh, oh – this could go very badly.” I was happily wrong though.

Collen, Collen, Colleen: my mind is as open as a casino. I wonder about yours though with all your Tribute Band Conspiracy Theories = )

Haha – who loves you girl?!

    I do!

  25. Looks like a lot of fun. My band, Sun King – A Tribute to the Cult will be playing next Sunday (although the website is not yet updated to reflect it yet – Hint Hint). Yes, we are another Tribute Band and I hope you wont hold that against us if we advance.

Our web site is http://www.sunkingtribute.com and http://www.myspace.com/sunkingtribute

We look forward to Rockin Viejas.

  26. jmullenla Says:

WHAT?!? I have no record of the Sun Kings playing.

  27. Joe booked us a couple weeks ago??!??

  28. This week looks interesting. Mr. Crowley finds themselves in a bit of a pinch. Their guitar player looks more like Zach than Randy (actually more like Ted Nugent than either) but to win they’ll need to lean to the Randy line (it’s just more popular). Their drummer is a machine and might be too much for the room and they will hit it hard. It looks like there must be a couple of monsters of rock tribs ’cause this one is not the OC version. I hope their singer is a good as the OC guy though. I’m guessing the Corvelles are a big casino fit but in there with an Ozzy and Cult tribute? Two tribs a corporate rock a classic metal and a cool lookin’ motown revue. Looks like another tough night of judging. I’m glad I’m not on that panel.

  29. I’m the singer/guitar player for 619 and just wanted to extend a huge thank you from all of us guys in the band to Viejas, to the judges and to our amazing group of friends who made the trek out to Alpine to show their tremendous support. We would also like to congratulate the other winners so far and look forward to playing amongst these great bands in the semi-finals. Thanks again!
