WEEK 4 (June 15)

[Author's Note: [Author’s note: If this is your first time visiting the UMC blog, you might want to check out the INTRODUCTION first.]

And the winner is…

Monsters of Rock!

Congratulations you hard rocking rockers you.

“““““““““““““““““““““““““““

It was a pretty good showing for Week 4 of the Ultimate Music Challenge, considering that it was Father’s Day, and the opening of the Del Mar Fair, and The U.S. Open. It took a little bit to warm up, but when it did, it warmed up quite warmly.

The first band to play was a Cult tribute band called Sun King.

Set List:

  • Wild Flower
  • Lil Devil
  • Fire Woman
  • Love Removal Machine
  • Sanctuary

The very first thing that the judges noticed was the guitar player’s wig. Good god was this thing atrocious! It was impossible, in the early part of their set, to focus on the music because of the monstrosity on his head. But then, when the shock wore off, you could tell that under that wig was an awesome guitarist. The singer was great too. All of them pretty much mastered the technical aspect of Cult tribution¹; however, with regard to their level of energy, they were about a spark plug short of firing on all pistons.

In their defense, the crowd was still pretty small and stiff at that point, making it very difficult for a band to create energy when they’re not getting any energy back, which is pretty much what Iwe told them during the judges’ comments, after which I added, “Oh, and Mr. Guitar Player, don’t you feel bad for the muskrat you had to scalp to get his fur?”

The guitarist chuckled, then pointed at the wig as if to say, “I know, I know, but the guys made me wear it.”

Next up, The Corvelles.

Set List:

  • Ain’t No Mountain High Enough (reprise)
  • Come See About Me
  • You Keep Me Hanging On
  • Stop in the Name of Love
  • Where Did Our Love Go/Baby Love medley
  • Why do Fools Fall in Love

(Wig Status = dark black beehive vis-a-vis Diana Ross)

<a

This was a fairly large ensemble, with bass, drums, guitar, sax, keys, and three hot mamas with glittery dresses and humongous, um, white boas.

From the moment the mamas started singing “Ain’t No Mountain,” chills ran down my spine. It was only a short reprise but instantly, we knew, these chicks were gonna bring it.

And it got brought.

All I kept thinking was . . . And on the 7th day, God created The Corvelles

Their lead vocals, their harmonies, their gowns, their choreography – it was all so damn close to perfect my pimples were goosifying on the spot.

And the musicians were no slouches either.

The Corvelles were firing on all pistons all right. But not like the high RPM rev of a race car, rather, the gorgeous purr of a brand new Aston Martin V12 idling in your garage. You know, that sound when you open the hood and can hear the motor humming, nary a blip or a burp to be heard, and the engine is clean and sparkling, and the radiator fan blows a gentle breeze in your face. That’s The Corvelles – a T-Rex song incarnate.

During the judges comments I expressed my deep infatuation with the Diana Ross character and added, “Now that’s the way to wear a wig!”

The Xceptions came next.

Set List:

  • Footloose – Kenny Loggins
  • Dancing Queen – ABBA
  • Barracuda – Heart
  • All I Ever Wanted – Santana
  • Bad Case of Loving You – Robert Palmer

(Wig Status = No Wigs)

I had such high hopes for these guys when they started. As much as I hate the song “Footloose,” and spent most of the 80’s hoping Jim Messina would stab Kenny Loggins in his sleep, the lead singer/lead guitarist really gave that tune a new life, and the two female background singers hit the harmonies in such a way that brought a zeal to the song far beyond anything that other asshole did with the song (suck on that Kenny Loggins).

My high hopes fizzled quickly after “Footloose” though because that was the last we heard from the male singer handing off the lead vocals, instead, to the two, inadequate chick singers².

The tall blonde sang “Dancing Queen” and it was an instant disaster. So was Barracuda by the shorter brunette. It was a ludicrous attempt for her to even try to channel Ann Wilson on this, or any other Heart tune.

To be fair, I was talking to a couple of the guys in the Xceptions afterward and they said the girls couldn’t hear themselves in the monitors, which is probably true, and unfortunate because the music was so freaking good, especially the aforementioned singer/guitarist, who was stunningly talented. They were so good I don’t think the crowd much noticed the weak vocal showing. In fact, they got the second largest cheer of the night so what do I know.

Then came Monsters of Rock

Set List:

  • Highway Star – Deep Purple
  • Flight of Icarus – Iron Maiden
  • Night Train – Guns and Roses
  • Take Hold of the Flame – Queensrÿche

(Wig status = No Wigs)

It took about six or seven notes of “Highway Star” before I realized that The Corvelles were in serious danger of being toppled.

Highway Star is an incredibly difficult song to play and sing. But these guys slammed it; I mean smacked that song out of the galaxy. I can’t say enough about the guitars, drums, bass, and especially vocals, which were from another realm.

Then, for their second song, when most bands wisely choose to play it safe, to play Iron Maiden – in a casino lounge – that took balls of iron. And it worked! The Maiden was a hit! It couldn’t have been any better if Eddie the ‘Ead himself walked out onto that stage, 12 feet tall and lumbering behind the drum kit with the souls of the damned dripping from his bloody maw.

And talk about your nearly impossible vocalists to cover, just try covering Ian Gillan, Bruce Dickinson, Axel Rose and Geoff Tate – in one set! Just try it!

I have one suggestion for Monsters of Rock; just a minor name change. Hey guys, why not use the heavy metal umlaut in your name? Try something like, Mönsters of Rock, or Monsters of Röck, or even Monsters öf Rock, whatever man, just make sure you get those eyeballs of Satan looking over your band name and you will forever rock in giant, golden arenas.

Last but not least came an Ozzy Osbourne Tribute band called Mister Crowley.

Set List:

  • Diary of a Madman
  • Over the Mountain
  • I Don’t Know
  • Crazy Train

(Wig Status – I suspect the Ted Nugent doo on the guitarist was real).

I felt bad for Mr. Crowley to have to follow a powerhouse like Monsters because they were quite good. The singer, as I said in the judges’ comments, was better at covering Ozzy than even Ozzy can cover Ozzy at this point. And he had that special sense of brain-deadedness that Ozzy seems to always carry around with him.

The music was great, and hard, and the guitar player, who looked like Ted Nugent but played like Randy Rhoads, was smoking. However, in the end, it was clear to all three of us that the choice was between The Cörvëllës and the Mönstërs öf Röck.

And the choice couldn’t be more difficult, couldn’t be more applesy and orangesish.

If The Corvelles are the sound of the soothing hum of a finely tuned Aston Martin idling, then Monsters of Rock are the roar of and Eagle 772 Spreadmore dragster engine with titanium valves and Manton pushrods speeding 200 miles per hour down the stretch without a chute.

If The Corvelles are a sac of warm sweet estrogen dripping over our heads necks and shoulders, then Monsters of Rock are double barrel shotguns splattering hard raw testosterone throughout the room.

If God created the Corvelle’s on the 7th day, then on the 8th, Satan gave God a phone call and said, “Yo homey, that’ some good shit right there. But, have you heard this?!”, and then dropped some Monsters of Rock on Göd’s headphones.

The rest is history.

1. Tribution – (prounced Trih-bew-shun) A new word I just coined which means, the act of one band paying tribute to another, such as in a Cult tribute band.

  1. I agree, the two top bands of the night couldn’t have been more opposite. And I TOTALLY agree with your decision… because I’m a rocker and the MONSTERS were OFF THE CHART!!! I’ve seen them on many occasions and, in fact make it a point to get to their gigs as often as is humanly possible. They have an energy that is so exciting and their song list isn’t the easy stuff most cover bands play (and that your sooooo sick of hearing) ~ they play REAL rock and roll. And they do it with perfection!!!
Oh, and the guys really are nice, humble and considerate to us loyal fans… you gotta love that!

I DO have one complaint for the night… the show started an hour late. It seemed like a week. But, I have to admit, that the bands kicked it up a notch and they made up the time because we were out the door at the end of the night at the same time as last week. I think the stage manager is pretty amazing… he sure knows what he’s doing.

Love your blog as always Edward and I’ll see you next week for the semi-finals….

  2. Thanks a lot Ed for the kind words. I am the singer for the Cult band. This was our first weekend playing live and to do it in a competition was incredible. We’ve been together just over a month and were called in to substitute when another band cancelled last minute. We are grateful for the opportunity to play on that stage. Your comments hit home. And we will work on upping the energy Tuesday night at our 2nd show at 9pm at the Beauty Bar (shameless plug).

I second the previous posters comments about the stage manager. He informed us of the late start time but was extremely easy to work with and ran things very smoothly from our point of view. Thanks a ton Casey.

Oh, and the guitarists is ditching the wig, but I might start wearing one . . .

  3. Yeah. Ian Gillan all the way up to Geoff Tate. Awesome. I have never heard a tribute band do dual guitar leads before and nail it like that.

    Nice Job guys!

  4. spoonido Says:

Aw… why is it that the noise boys with the sledge hammers win over the girls with the finesse? I hope to see more variety in the upcoming shows. :o )

  5. Patti, yes we did run a bit late last night. Normally we’re right on time, but, the Corvelles told us they were having a pregnancy emergency with one of the band member’s wives, so we pushed it back for them. We could’ve just axed them, but then you would’ve missed out on those sweet gorgeous Motown sounds. See you next week?

Paul – glad you took the critique as being constructive. You have all the ingredients you need to be a stunning and effective Cult tribute. Just get bring that pizazz up a notch, try to let loose a little, maybe develop a drug or booze addiction to really loosen up the vibe.

Oh, And the guitar player doesn’t necessarily to stop wearing wigs, just, stop wearing THAT wig.

  6. I’m Tom drummer from Mönsters öf Röck. I wanted to say thank you for the magnanimous review. I would like acknowledge the skills of our competitors and thank the crew for running a great show and give props to our supporters of whom we’d be dust without. It will go down as one of our most memorable gigs ever.

One small correction if I may point out, the title of the Iron Maiden song is “Flight of Icarus.” And yeah, I kind of like the umlaut suggestion. I also thought it was remarkable how the Corvelles seemed to defy gravity.

  7. jmullenla Says:

the semis are july 20th and 27th. just so’n you all know…

  8. I am the “Bato School Teacher” guitarist in Monsters of Rock. Funny how Jaime Valle nailed that one because I really am a school teacher by trade (middle school). I guess you could say I’m the Jack Black of the band.

I just wanted to echo what Tom our drummer stated. Thanks for the critique and thanks to the stage and sound crew. We had excellent experience. Load in was non-rushed and the monitors were perfect. And from what the audience told us, the sound out front was great. This whole event is top notch and I must thank everyone who has had a part in making it happen.

Of course I must thank the rockin audience. Their support really made the evening perfect for us.

As for Jaime’s comment, a guy with his talent can call me a “Bato School Teacher” any time he wants. It’s an honor to be acknowledged by him in any way at all.

    C-ya soon

  9. Up until last week I had never been a fan of metal. “Monsters Of Rock” changed my mind! You guys ROCK!
Judges made the right call, but Corvelles, I feel, are better for the room.

Hey Steve from the Xceptions, you were great! Bask in your glory, you earned it.

Sun King; I thought the wig made you look like Brian Jones. Save the wig for a Stones tribute!

Shirtless guy with the hair in the Ozzy band; Put me on the mailing list, all my girlfriends want to see! Tip for not getting your hair caught in your tuning pegs; put a little plastic wrap over the pegs.

    It was a fun night!

  10. The website is looking pretty complete with the exception of “Old School”?

Here’s my buddy’s email for the website if you have any info to add or change for any band, past shows included.

    graphicdav@yahoo.com

lookin’ forward to the Rage trib!

  12. Sergio,

It takes one to know one my friend…
I’m also a Bato, and a school teacher (college)

    Salud!

    ~JV

  13. What the hell is a Bato anyway?

  14. I’m Italian, but I think Bato is like a brother !! I thought monsters of rock were the ALL ROUND best band. Very tight!! My band is playing this sunday, and are looking forward to it! See you then !!!

  15. OK, FYI

The correct spelling for Bato, is V A T O (dude, man)

As in, “orale ese vato!” roughly translated means, “right on, man!”

    or, “right on dude”

    ~JV

  16. See, now that’s what I thought you said at the Judge’s table. But then you guys were spelling it Bato, and I thought, hmm, could be a variation of Vato, like maybe a Bato is an on old, crazy Vato (batos in the belfry) or maybe it is an ornery old lady vato (Shuddup ya old bato).

I just didn’t know what the hell it was. Glad we cleared that up.

Edwin “Vapo” Decker (the vapid one)

  17. bjohnson Says:

I thought the Monsters of Rock were fabulous.

But, as stated earlier comparing them to The Corvelles is like comparing apples to oranges.

Maybe in the future, at least in the first round, you can have bands of simular styles compete against each other, i.e. one Sunday your can have rock bands, another Sunday R&B, soul, funk, Motown, the next Sunday Blues, Country, and so on.

Or maybe have one or two from each catagory.

This would make it more fair due to the fact that 20% of the judging is audience response. The Corvelles were up against 4 other rock bands who more than likely brought there fans with them. With that being said if all numbers were equal, 80% of the audience would have been rock fans.
If The Monsters of Rock had been matched up with against 4 other R&B groups, the crowd response which equals 20% of the vote may have swung in favor of the Corvelles and this GREAT Band the Monsters of Rock would not be advancing to the next round.

Just food for thought. You’re doing a great job, keep up the good work.

  18. Great, now I suppose we’ll have to change the name to Vatös öf Röck.

  19. [...] Challenge. I think the band is still in shock and awe at the response we got from the crowd and the reviews by the judges. We’re hoping you can join us at the semi final on July 20th. Thanks to everyone who came out [...]

  20. Edwin, can you please let me know what time the bands need to check in on sunday? Thanks paulie

  21. You probably should let Casey know you’re there at least 5 min. before you go on…

  22. Hey there Edwin! Thanks so much for the awesome write-up you gave The Corvelles! It let’s us know that our hard work is finally paying off. Even though we didn’t win, it was still a fun night!

  23. Edwin, one thing I wanted to clear up. It wasn’t The Corvelles that had the pregnancy emergency. I’ll see you soon!

  24. linda morgan Says:

i missed the show but i’m not surprized they won! they have the best vocalist out there! and where most band’s are lucky to have one good guitarist they have TWO GREAT GUITARIST”S! added by a great rhythm section who are the DRIVING FORCE that bring it all together. i really wish i had made the show it sound’s like the edwin decker knew what he was talking about!!

  25. JV — thanks for clearing up the whole “Bato” thing! I thought that my Texas Tornados had been singing the wrong words!
Ed — Wow! Tribute bands and cover bands on the same bill and the winner was a cover band?!?! Amazing… you just threw a monkey wrench into the whole TBCT! I agree with Shaaron the the Corvelles might be better for the room… but MOR…. you guys truely ROCKED!! Actually… once again, I’m glad I didn’t have to judge. ALL bands were again very close!

  26. Variety cover bands, tribute cover bands, metal cover bands, so far we haven’t heard any bubble gum tribute bands. Maybe that’s a good thing.

I have been working steady for the last few decades, and this is the first time in years that I have been able to see what’s out there! San Diego has done us proud. We have a ton of talent! One of the women in the Corvelles said they had been given cards from three different agents. That in it’s self is worth the effort! It is really hard to get an agent out to see a band. And, I have been having good luck on the slots! This contest rocks on several levels!

    Thank you Viejas!

  27. Hey bjohnson… the Corvelles were great and all… but, ya know, they have like a dozen members in their band and if they didn’t bring enough fans to fill the dance floor, well, who’s fault is that? Those of us who drove the distance to support our favorite band – MONSTERS, well, we DID support and if the judges counted that in their final decision, um, I say – GREAT! Everyone had the same chance to bring out their “fans”… Monsters just did the best job!

Go Monsters ~ we love you :-)
