Week 5 (June 22)

[Author's Note: [Author’s note: If this is your first time visiting the UMC blog, you might want to check out the INTRODUCTION first.]

Before getting into the contest, I’d like to mention two things:

The first is to tell you about an article I’m writing for the blog. It’s an interview with last year’s Ultimate Music Challenge champions, Cash’d Out, in which they will answer questions like, “How did you spend the 20 thousand dollars in prize money?” and, “What advice do you have for this year’s contenders?” That post should go up sometime this week so stay tuned.

The second thing is that I’d like to write a few words in honor of my hero, George Carlin, who died of heart failure yesterday. I can’t believe that bastard up and croaked on me when he had so much more comedy to give.

Carlin was such a huge influence on my life and my writing, maybe even the primary influence. From when I was a young boy, and would steal my parent’s record albums, I adored listening to his filthy language and rampant counterculture references. I even memorized all his routines, still know some of them today.

You could even say that I “covered” George Carlin, which was kind of fun and maybe the reason I am so open to and appreciative of cover bands because I used to walk around all day reciting filthy George Carlin routines to the delight of my pals, who also had never heard anyone like him, not at 14 anyway.

Now, I don’t normally mourn celebrities. Certainly not publicly, but what I’m feeling today goes beyond mourning, so I just wanted to take this moment to say, “Goodbye you funny old prick – I will miss you.”

INSERT MOMENT OF SILENCE HERE.

And now, the winner of Week 5 of the Ultimate Music Challenge is…

Anger is a Gift.

Congratulations you wild men!

The night started off with Surreal Time and it was an explosion – of averageness.

They were a mostly contemporary country cover band that, I’m sorry to say, didn’t give us all that much about which to rave. The dynamics, as Jaime likes to say, were “mushy” and their energy was flat. I told them they sounded like they were marching through a bog. Their only saving grace was the singer, who was sexy and vibrant and not a bad vocalist, until she tried to sing R.E.S.P.E.C.T., which really exposed her vocal limitations.

She did say, during the judge’s comments, that the band had forced her to sing that song. I hope, for all their sakes, they don’t make her sing it again.

I also didn’t quite understand their choice of band name because there’s really nothing surreal about country music, but whatever, they had bigger problems than that.

Next came this weeks’ winner, a Rage Against the Machine tribute band called Anger is a Gift.

From the opening chords, the room belonged to them. Even people who aren’t Rage fans were saying how good they were. My waitress, the lovely Elia, who prefers country music and likes long walks on moonlit beaches, told me that they kicked the country band’s butt – and she doesn’t even like hard rock nor had she ever heard of Rage Against the Machine. That should give you an idea of how good they were.

Some bands simply defy genre. When you’re great, you’re great, and I bet even some of the hardcore polka fans in the room were throwing their fists in the air screaming, “Bullet in your head, bullet in your head, they put a bullet in your motherfucking head!”

When Anger started playing, I tried to get a photo of the singer but the little bugger wouldn’t stop running around and jumping and shitm so all I kept getting were fuzzy shots like this,

and this,

and this globule of nothingness

I wanted to scream, “Would you stand still already?!” but this guy was on a mission. Man did he know how to make the most of a rock stage – just like his benefactor, Zack DeLarocha.

During the judges’ comments, I mentioned that I had seen Rage at Coachella a couple of years ago, from on stage, about 15 feet away from guitarist Tom Morello, and I have to tell you, there were times that Anger out-sang and out-played Rage.

Of course, RATM did it first. They composed it, created it, sculpted it, and you can never take that away from them, but what these kids did – the performance aspect of the show – well I just don’t know how much better it could’ve been.

They closed the set with the nuclear detonation that is “Freedom,” which is the song where Anger get’s their name.

“What does the billboard say?
Come and play, come and play
Forget about the movement
Your anger is a gift.”

For that last line the singer growled and howled and screamed out while pounding foot-fists on the stage as the band slammed the song home.

“Freedom, yeah,”

Freedom, yeah right!”

The room erupted in applause, and when it was over, everybody lit a cigarette.

Next was a Credence Clearwater Revival tribute band called Travelin’ Band, which was ok – the singer sounded just like John Fogerty, and played his guitar parts quite well, and the rest of the band wasn’t so bad either, but it felt like they were just parroting CCR. They weren’t feeling the songs. Not like Anger was feeling theirs. Plus, they were playing small ball; the sound, the posture, the performance was diminutive. And not because they were a Trio. Anyone who’s ever seen the Police, Rush, Hendrix, Cream, The Jam, Violent Femmes, Kingston Trio, Dixie Chicks, Wolfmother, ELP, the Minutemen, Muddy Waters, Primus, Grand Funk Railroad – or our own local rock trio heroes – Superunloader, knows that making large music doesn’t require large bands; it requires large emotional output, which the Travellin’ Band, while technically proficient, was sorely lacking.

I think Jaime said it best:

“This band is the perfect example of musicians who have learned how to play their instruments; they just haven’t learned how to play with other people yet.”

So true Jaime. There was no real push and pull happening here, no bouncing off each other’s riffs, feeling each other’s vibe, feeding on each other’s energy then farting it back out again with explosive musical outbursts.

Ditto Jukebox, who, now that I think about it, should’ve been the ones who called themselves Surreal Time, what with their slightly bizarre and eclectic song selections (some that worked and some that didn’t) and vocalist mismatches.

They started with the barely adequate Killers’ song, “Somebody Told Me,” sung by the male vocalist. Then they handed over the vocals to the female keyboardist who did “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse, and whose pitch, at first, was awful.

Pitch wasn’t her only problem, but tone and style as well, which just seemed out of place for the band because her style was, as Danielle correctly pointed out, more of a stage and theater thing than that of a rock band.

After that they played a cover of “Walk This Way,” which was a total sonic failure. It really didn’t start getting good, for me, until “Little Toy Gun,” by Honeyhoney, which is a playful, and highly theatrical song that suited her tone much better. They closed with “Heartbreaker” and rocked that song quite well. Alas it was too little too late.

After Jukebox came more vocal problems with Lifelike.

Allow me to digress for a moment so that I may address these vocal issues and to make a point to some of my more snobby, audiophile friends who like to poo-poo cover bands. When it comes to vocals, being in a cover band is markedly more difficult than being in an original band because in an original band the singer just has to sing the song the way he or she sings his or her own songs. Then, when they play live, they merely have to cover themselves.

But a cover band vocalist has to sound like somebody else. And everybody in the room is waiting for that singer to hit those notes exactly like the original singer hit those notes and when they don’t, well it can get ugly real fast.

So, while I may sound harsh when commenting about these vocalists, keep in mind that I understand the difficult task before them. Believe me, as a person who has sent his fair share of karaoke patrons screaming for the door, I know how hard it is.

Lifelike was, musically, almost perfect. But their vocal deficiencies became obvious from the first song, “Don’t You Forget about Me.” The singer and guitarist kept switching lead vocals and neither of them sang very well. Their harmonies were also suspect, though I believe this was not a problem with pitch, but more about the chemistry of their voices, which didn’t seem to gel.

It wasn’t until “Dancing with Myself” (sung by the guitarist) when the vocals started coming together. They kicked it back to the bass player with “You Shook me all Night Long” – a brave choice to go with AC/DC, which at first sounded excellent, but he got winded about 3/4 way through, and returned to the same, unimpressive vocals.

During the judges’ comments, I told them they needed another singer, a pro-singer, someone who could bring those two disparate voices together, sonically, and who could hit all, or at least most, of the notes.”

They were visibly upset by that remark.

Who can blame them?

R.I.P. George Carlin. We salute you

89 Responses to “Week 5 (June 22)”

  1. I was at the show last night , (June 22), and kind of experienced what you described. I am not a Rage Against…. fan or a fan of that genre of music. However, one can’t deny the energy and all out rock those guys put out. I was moved by music I don’t really care for. Here’s the but…I have two problems with Anger…. winning last night. You blasted the female lead singer before this band for having “pitch” problems. Well, at least she was “singing”!!! All the guy in A.I.A G. did was scream for 20 minutes. Where’s the risk in that? How can you reward that? I doubt that the average listener in the audience sensed these pitch problems.
Also in your blog explaining the rules you mentioned that the band that wins must be the type that can play Viejas for a year. Do you really see this band playing the V Lounge??? I’ve been to all but one of the shows and I’ved heard the judges comment on poor song selection. Is’nt their whole band a poor selection for Viejas. Yeah, those guys rocked but do you think a V lounge audience would enjoy a pretty , multi octave singer, (with pitch problems), or Anger…… screaming for three hrs. Come on now!!!!!
In any case, lots and lots of talented people. I’ll be there next week!!

  2. Ok, first of all, Spectator, I said I liked the singer in the first band, Surreal Time, UNTIL their last song (R.E.S.P.E.C.T).

Secondly, the lead singer in Anger did not just scream for 20 minutes. He did exactly what Rage’s singer, Zack DeLarocha, does – he rapped.

That was one of the great things about Rage, a perfect mix of hip-hop and raw rock and roll.

You may not consider rap singing, but it’s a talent unto itself – a very difficult one if you’ve ever tried to do it.

It’s the same old argument of comparing apples and oranges, but bottom line is, Anger was better at what their schtick was than Surreal Time, or anybody else, was at theirs.

Secondly, we do not have standing rule that you “must” be the type of band who can play Viejas for a year, only that this is something we take into consideration.

    HOWEVER…

After a conversation the producers and I had two weeks ago, we have decided to back off that position. Mostly because, it doesn’t seem fair to a dock a band just because they aren’t casino-friendly.

Nonetheless, it wasn’t even close yesterday. Wven if we were factoring that in, there’s no way we could’ve handed the victory to anyone but Anger.

Glad we didn’t scare you away JR, see you on Sunday.

  3. Just a spectator Says:

I went to this performance last night as well as another performance a few weeks ago…. and I would definitely have to agree with the comment by JR… who the heck wants to listen to a screaming band…. this is for viejas not a high school concert. I will say they were good for what they do but come on judges (especially the 3rd judge who absolutely loved them)… what the heck were you thinking??? You really honestly think that Viejas would like a screaming band??? You guys need to be replaced…. oh well…. I definitely agree with JR again about the lead singer of the first band… she was memorable and a good beautiful singer. I didn’t know what the heck they were talking about when it came to pitch problems… maybe a little tiny tiny bit… but she just had a different sound/tone to her voice and I think that the 3rd judge didnt like that…. (he was an idiot- I bet he would have hated Steven Tyler too when he wasnt famous). I thought she totally did something different with RESPECT which was my absolute favorite…. I thought it was super awesome and very different. There was a reason why everyone was dancing for that song impeticular. I thought she was great…. like the next Janis Joplin and I think everyone BUT the judges (the 3rd specifically) LOVED HER!!!…. VIEJAS please find a new Simon Cowell he is ruining your venue by picking angry untasteful bands….

  4. Jason Mullen Says:

folks! no one is ruining the venue. i’m enjoying our sunday play time, aren’t you? it’s not every day that you get to hear black sabbath, rage, and the cure in the dream catcher so bang your heads a little! Sundays are for fun. This is experiment day!

I don’t have any intention of changing the weekend format in the room (Friday & Saturday nights) based on the outcome of this event. Our format works, our guests enjoy it, and I wouldn’t consider alienating our regulars.

  5. Spectator – thanks for your comments. You have a right to your opinion and I respect them… NOT!

    ROFL

You have to be tone deaf not to have heard the singer’s pitch problems in the Aretha tune. As I’ve said a hundred times already, she was fine before that, but “RESPECT” was godawful.

And to compare her to Steven Tyler, one of the most talented glam rock singers of all time, is ludicrous, just as it is ludicrous to call ME an idiot, when you don’t even know that the phrase “in particular” is actually two words.

    impeticular?!

    That’s rich.

  6. Edward…Just a quick question…. didn’t 5 Miles High play two weeks ago, and run a close second to 6one9? Did they play again, only not very good this time? Or maybe did you get the name of the band incorrect as you ripped their vocalist “a new one”? I couldn’t make it yesterday and it sounds like I missed a really great performance or two. But, you might want to confirm that there was a SECOND band in the competition with the name 5 Miles High (or change it, if not!).

Hmmmm, maybe the “screaming, rapping vocals” messed with your mind, man… :-)

  7. Oh, and one more thing… I loved Carlin too. He was awesome and very funny and I’ll miss his way of looking at life.

  8. Emily- Lead singer of Surreal Time Says:

    Hey everyone!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I had a great time playing at the venue last night. It was my first time performing on a big stage in front of more than 20 people (haha). So it was SUPER cool for me! But since I have been singing for only 6 months it was SUPER nerve racking. BUT anyways, I really thought anger management did great. I’ve seen small pieces and performances by rage against the machine (definitely not my style) but I know that they did an amazing, AMAZING job! The whole band was great. I want to again thank the judges because the band and I definitely learned a lot. I definitely think I am more of a country singer and I am sorry I totally blew it on RESPECT (It was a mistake). I tried to make it different but I guess I am bound to make plently of mistakes like that. I atleast learned that country is my thing. Anyways, I just wanted to primarily congratulate the winning band Anger Management, you can tell you guys worked really hard and you deserved it!!! You guys are ALL amazing performers and I really believe that you guys kicked butt last night. And to all the other bands last night- you were all amazing! I think there was a lot of talent out there last night and everyone had their own little niche that they were good at.

    GOD BLESS YOU ALL….

    Emily Richards
    http://www.surrealtime.biz

  9. Hey, wait a minute!!. i did’nt call anyone an idiot or suggest that the venue was being ruined. Maybe you just got me mixed up with someone else. I’m having fun listening to all the types of music. I just did’nt agree with last nights winner for the reasons I already stated.

A long as I have the floor again though, (Now Ed’s really going to blast me), I thought it was reallly uncool of you Ed to not only annoint Anger…. as the likely winner of last nights contest but, the likely winner of the whole thing. And you did that after the second band played . There were still three bands to go for the evening. That was not cool. (OK Ed, I’m ready).

  10. Ed, you REALLY must not know what the f your talkin about if YOU really don’t know the bands name that you’re criticizing!!! 6 people came up to us after we played and said you are an old ass and that we really rocked and YOUR pitch is off! Funny cause none of our fans were there… AND TRUST ME Many people enjoy our 5-6 hr shows and dont gamble on sunday nights. And isn’t that its really about @ VIEJAS???

    Rest in peach GEORGE!!

PROPS to the anger guys I heard you from backstage and thought you really nailed what I heard Congrats….
Great sound on stage, I had an issue with my cymbal on the first song ..It fell and I was looking around for a stage manager or crew but Nada! Other than that .
Oh by the way I’m the drummer in LIFELIKE

  11. Armando (Green mexico shirt) Says:

    Hey all!
Great show sunday night!! Of course I have to side with my friends from A.I.A.G, I would like to recogize the other groups who played sunday night! INCREDIBLE!!!!! Honestly, I loved every group for their own style (Loved the CCR Tribute). I was a bit nervous for my friends after the first band played just for the fact that the all thier fans were cheering them loud (The female vocalist wailed!) I didnt think any one was going to like AIAG’s set, but glancing over at the audience (and judges) I saw quite alot of people bobbing thier heads!! (Sorry JR) I can honestly say, as a friend, Johnny (Lead singer) puts heart and soul into his performances and he’s the coolest guy you’ll ever meet! So, that being said, buy the guy a beer!! Hell, buy Ed a beer!! Lets all get along, and we will all see you guys in the semi finals!!
    Peace, Love, Rage…. Mando.
Ps… Ed, Wait till the 27th of july!! It’ll be fun!! Peace.

  12. Well, if you asked me… (and who would)
The contest might be a fine way for Viejas to preview bands that are cool for the DreamCatcher or the V, however it is my understanding that the judges don’t work for Viejas and may pick whom every they want.
also, another word for this event is “talent contest”. Every contest like this has controversy and disappointment. Every one! So stop with your conspiracy theories and second guessing. These judges are qualified but they can pick the winners for any reason they want so let it go! geez
They picked different winners for the first two weeks than I would pick but I learned something about what it takes to win. A complete package. Plus you gotta bring it that night and compete.

  13. btw Paulie,
If Ed got your name wrong maybe that say more about your band then it says about him as a judge. ???

  14. I’ve been at every show. I thought last night was the weakest so far. The judges only perked up when metal was being played, and at times were not paying attention to the music. So far, I have agreed with the judges, but the girl who sang Respect was pretty good, in spite of not hitting the high note. Life Like were very good. They looked professional and actually had vocals! I had a problem with the judge that said they needed another singer to fill out the harmonies. How can they be judged on what they didn’t do? Their guitar player had really different tone, and a wonderful sense of voicing his chords. THAT was “fresh” not the musical masturbation of distorted guitar thrashing.

So much for the TBCT. It’s now a Metal Band C.T.

  15. hahaha Dickie… your comment about the judge getting Paulie’s band name wrong would be funny ~ except that Ed said crappy things about a band that I have FRIENDS in. Ed should correct himself because 5 Miles High didn’t earn the criticism he meant for LifeLike. The guys in the band may not even read this blog, but it is important that at least in print, journalists get the basic band names correct. BTW, I happen to think Edward is pretty damn funny and I think he has been a great judge, so no ill will to him. It was just a simple mistake…. jeez, no one is perfect!

  16. Zelimir Jozo Says:

ED, props to your description of A.I.A.G.’s performance! They totally deserved the win last night. They put on a great show and I think that is EXACTLY what this competition is about. They brought the showmanship they’ve got the musical ability and they definitely made the audience bring the noise and the applause necessary to max out the decibels on the reader. I absolutely LOVED them and can’t wait to see them play again!

P.S. RIP George Carlin aka Rufus

  17. Ok, ok – i guess I’ve got some ’splainin’ to do.

Lifelike. I sincerely apologize about the mistake. I couldn’t figure out what the hell happened so I went back and looked at the band lineup they give the judges. Apparently there was a clerical error because they put 5 Miles’ name instead of yours on the sheet. They did catch the mistake though and crossed it out and wrote in “Lifelike” by hand on every lineup sheet… except mine.

Still, it’s a mistake I shouldn’t have made. I kept thinking, “Damn that name sounds familiar. How do I know that name?”

Here’s the funny part, when I went to the web to find yours (5 miles) link, I looked at the picture and thought, “well that doesn’t look like them at all.” That’s why i didn’t use the link. Cuz I figured it was another band with the same name. (that happens sometimes). So, I guess it’s true – i am an “old ass” cuz that was definitely a senior moment. Again, apologies. I have fixed it on the post.

JR – so sorry, I realized that it wasn’t you I was responding too, but I made a brain fart when I wrote your name. I fixed it though. Can we be pals again?

As for your comment about my “annointing” Anger is a Gift, I’m not really sure what the problem is. I said they had “good shot” at winning the whole thing, which was true at the time and is true now. Had another band come on stage and beat them, then so be it. It still wouldn’t have proved me wrong because I was simply comparing them to all the bands I’ve heard throughout the contest so far and they bode pretty well in that comparison. Would you rather a judge/analyst disguise his feelings, or would you rather he let it all hang out. I’ve always preferred the, Let-it-All-Hang-Out method, which might explain my various arrests and restraining orders.

Shaaron (with two A’s) I knew after last night somebody was going to bring up a potential Heavy Metal Conspiracy Theory, and since you are the first one, I guess that makes you the leader of the HMCT’s, which makes us sworn enemies — be gone mistress of the dark!

Emily, I appreciate your positive attitude. I even said so when you got off stage, how you smiled while negative things were being said about your band. That took courage and guts. I really did enjoy your country voice, it was so much more suited for your tone. Keep working it girl.

Patti – you are absolutely right, it is my job to get names right. And thanks for understanding that I’m human and mistakes are made. Oh, and by the way, my name is Edwin, not Edward.

LOL – love you girl. Come down next Sunday!

  18. Uh oh. Sorry Edwin. I hope you’ll forgive me. I DID say (and mean) good things about you :-)

Oh, and I AM planning on coming this Sunday. It really is a fun way to end the weekend!!!

  19. old ass idiot heavy metal conspirator judge who is single handedly ruining the dream catcher and vlounge for gamblers everywhere, take aim. kill all those who fail to pay tribute to rock as it should be. TBCT TBCT TBCT

  20. My husband and I had our UMC cherries popped yesterday and enjoyed every minute of it! I do have to say that anyone who disagrees with the judges’ choice has no idea what they are talking about. The judges were on point with all of their criticisms and praise. Even if you aren’t a RATM fan you have to appreciate the passion Anger is a Gift had for their art. I also want to point out that shaaron (with two a’s) had a particularly entertaining remark about Ed’s suggestions for Lifelike. “How can they be judged on what they didn’t do?” she asks? I pretty much think that is how the world works and I’m surprised there are people that haven’t caught on to that by now! In the music world, you can be judged by NOT having a good balance between vocalists (as in this case), or by NOT having stage presence (which they didn’t) or by NOT choosing songs appropriate for their level (which they definitely didn’t). And in the “real world” NOT doing something can get you in a hell of a lot of trouble no matter what the situation! Ohhh well, I guess that’s why we have awesome judges making the right decisions for us!

  21. OMG I made an enemy of a judge. Do I need to sell my soul to the devil to redeem myself?

OK, last night’s bands were basically a snooze, and the Angry band did wake the crowd, but is screaming rap really music?

I’ll wear all black, and see you next week.

  22. First off I would like to say I enjoyed all the bands that went on stage Sunday night, good stuff, loved every min. of it!

Secondly I would have to say the Rage tribute came out swinging! Wow! With not just screaming, but with meaning and emotion. They not only impressed the judges but as I floated around the room I picked up on a strong vibe that quite a big following of non rock/rap genre listeners actually Dug what Anger is a gift displayed, raw hard energy, crowd participation, great stage presents, Rage has some big shoes to fill and these guys put them on and gave their audience what they wanted to hear! Practice made perfect.

At Sundays competition One judge announced that this band has the quality to take the gold, silver or bronze, looking at it from a positive point of view, that message could be used as a wake up call for any previous winners to not let your guards down but to make sure they fight to the end. Anger really set the bar high for any other contender that night or for any other round for that matter. In ending, pitch problems, smitch problems! I say why don’t you go write Rage against the machine a letter about their horrible sound and yelling problems and see what song they might dedicate to you in response, anyone familiar with the lyrics at the end of “killing in the name?” I’m waiting for that one July 27th.

And for what it’s worth what’s a Rage tribute without a little controversy right? Just added bonus points in my book in the spirit of Freedom. Great job guys keep up the good work!

Good luck to all the winners!

  23. I was there on Sunday night for the contest and I
really enjoyed it. I liked just about all the bands
and the different styles each one brought on stage.
I’m not really a Rage fan, but after hearing and watching the band “Anger is a Gift”, I was really impressed! They really brought a lot of energy and excitement in the whole room. I am definitely going
back for the next competition when they play again
in July and I’ll be bringing several friends with me.
And someday if “Anger” is playing the V Lounge,
I would for sure go in to hear them. I really would
like to see their whole show!

  24. Alyssa, Life Like were judged poorly because one of the judges remarked they needed another voice. Yes, we are all judged everyday in life, but in this contest, the judging needs to be on what is presented, not on what could happen. Let’s face it every band in the contest could have more players! A stupid example could be that the Beatle tribute band, “Help” could have been better if they had included a George Martin or Billy Preston piano solo, but they were judged on what they did, not what they could have done. “Jukebox” also had a poor response form the judges, but no one said they could have been better if they had different or more players in the band.

To say that one has no idea what one is talking about because one doesn’t agree with the judges is absurd! The judges have done a fantastic job on this contest, but they are human, and are only giving their professional, experienced, and personal point of view. I, too, am professional, experienced, and human. I would have stayed a little more between the lines and judged Life Like on what they actually did. Some of their harmonies needed to be reworked, and I would have liked to see more movement with the front guys. But if Life Like were playing in the V Lounge, I might stop and take a listen. If Monsters Of Rock or 6one9 were playing I would stop and listen. If Anger were playing, I would not stop. To be fair, if I were a judge, I would have given Anger a high rating, because they were very good at what they do. Perhaps they were the best at what they do that night. I just don’t like what they do. Traveling Band, a tribute to CCR, do music that I somewhat like. However, they fell short because, in spite of nailing the lead vocals, the band was a snooze. They needed a lot of work to do what they do well. The judging was right on.

Ed, you said that the contest was looking for bands to play the venue, but the powers that be were backing off on that concept. Please keep in mind that most bands have taken the parameters of the contest seriously, and have chosen their sets accordingly.

  25. I did keep that in mind Sharon (with two A’s). That’s why I mentioned it, and also why I changed the judges’ criteria on the introduction.

I imagine the producers might contact the bands as well, but that’s between them and you. It’s out of my purview.

Incidentally, I was the judge who suggested Lifelike get another singer. But that was just a suggestion. That’s part of what we judges do; we make suggestions about how we think they can improve. but it’s not like I wrote on the ballot sheet, “needs another singer cuz the vocals are weak.” I just jotted a “7.0″ in the vocal category and moved on.

  26. OK, Ed, good explanation. So far I think the judges have chosen the right winner every Sunday. Each band won being the best at what they do out of the 5 choices. On the nights when bands have bent the rules, (such as too many players on the stage, and late entries), they haven’t advanced to the next round. I have said before that there is something for everyone in this contest. I am a huge Beatles fan, and “Help!” won!!!! “Monsters”, and I am not a metal fan, were freakin’ fantastic! I would make the effort to go to one of their shows, and I would even pay a cover. I think the bottom line for me is; given the choice between two different style bands, both who scored the same, I would pick the band most appropriate for the venue, putting my personal taste aside.

  27. I wondered when “Anger” told me they were playing Viejas how that was going to work. I mean I KNOW that they are truly amazing, dynamic EXTREMELY talented, but I was alittle worried how the Alpine Casino crowd would take them. Happily there are open minded and insightful judges running this thing and they saw what was really on the stage. Unadulterated , raw , and powerful musical presence.
It can’t be judged by who plays everyone’s favorite song, or which style of music is being played. It’s about how well it’s done and AIAG came off like seasoned professionals.
As for the “screaming”…if you know the music you would know that there is no other way to get across what being conveyed in the music of RATM.
It is ABOUT anger, it is about disgust with the system and the repression and manipulation in it. MORE people should be screaming about it !!
I found this band a couple of years ago and have been making roadtrips to LA just to see them. They are that good. I took a friend with me to see them after we had seen Rage at Coachella and she said she couldn’t even tell the difference. THAT is also a huge compliment to them.
What a treat to see them in my own back yard !

Good job everyone and kudos to the judges for knowing what it takes !
Expect more of the same in the semi-finals

  28. We just about lost our minds trying to figure out what were the “right songs to play” going into this competition. Honestly we were just hoping for a decent review and expected to hear “you’re not right for a casino”. To me it seems best to just play what you do well and hope you impress people with talent versus treating this competition as an audition for a lounge act. Getting the gig is part of the prize, but not part of the judging criteria as I understand it. That’s just my opinion from what I’ve observed, but to each his own.

By the way, as a resident of Alpine, I’d be spending many more weekends up at Viejas if they rocked like this on Friday and Saturday nights :-)

  29. Greetings and salutations everyone! I would just like to extend my deepest appreciation out to all our family and friends, fans and anyone who even got a little foot beat going while we performed, couldn’t thank you enough for your energy & support. Flag me down on the 27th and I’ll even buy you a drink:) much love and respect for giving us a strong foundation to stand on as well as taking that long drive, hope everyone was lucky with the slots and got to work on time Monday morning!lol!

I would also have to say I loved all the music pumped out from all the bands Sun. Definitely had me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire show thinking about all the great talent before and after us. Jukebox I got to meet a few of you and I’m looking forward to catching one of your next shows, cool people. Surreal Time! Hey very nice set and “Emily” thank you much for your kind words and as well… very lovely voice I honestly was baffled with the judges response, I would have enjoyed losing to a band with a beautiful lead as you. Thanks again…

Judges and Viejas Casino & Management !!! From all of us at Anger, “thank you”. The judge’s positive comments and reinforcing feedback was just beyond our expectations, still in shock! Thanks for the confidence boost, you’re the equivalent of cracking open a tall daddy of “Monster Energy Drink”lol! to keep us wired and moving. Thanks again!

  31. Thing is Shaaron, that’s not how the judging works. We don’t pick winners. Each judge judges each band in a bunch of different categories. So, when I’m watching a band, I score their vocals, and instruments, and charisma etc. The other judges do the same, then the audience participation is factored in as well as audience response (decibel level).

So it’s not really like we’re picking a winner, we’re just judging on the merits of each category. So it doesn’t much matter whether they fit the style of the casino – not to the judges anyway.

    e.

  32. Ed,
Thanks for the honest criticism. I thought the night was a lot of fun and the overall experience was great. To any bands that are sitting this out, I suggest that you put your hat in the ring next year. It’s a unifying experience for the band and unlike playing any other gig, when you know your going to stand up in front of the crowd and receive an instant appraisal of your group, it really gets the adrenaline flowing!

Your friends will tell you what you want to hear. The judges tell you what you need to hear!

Congrats to Anger Is A Gift. Just an FYI, we are forming a Bread tribute band and are coming to L.A. to take you on!
To Surreal Time- I have checked with the trademark office and it seems that you have neglected to trademarked your name. As per Ed’s suggestion, we have trademarked the name and you will be receiving a cease and desist notice from our attorney, very shortly. Thanks for the name.
To the rest of you guys, keep on rockin!

John – Drummer of Surreal Time (formerly known as Jukebox)

  33. Well, I had fun disagreeing with Ed so now it’s time to kiss and make up. After A.I.A.G played their first song, I leaned over to my wife, (she looked like her head was going to explode), and said “This kind of music is’nt my thing but these guys kick a–. I always focus on the drummer and that guy was second to no one. When the lead singer made is way to our side of the room I through my hands up in a Ronnie James Dio salute. I could’nt help it. It just happened. I still disagree with the win based soley on genre. Too audience limited. I’m not going to go buy any R.A.T.M. cd’s. But I remember my mother giving me that disgusted look when I cranked up my Alice Cooper albums and she said, “Thats not singing, He’s just screaming”. Rock on young guns. Congrats. Still friends Ed.

  34. Of course I meant “threw” my hands up.

  35. JR, as your friend, I implore you to rethink your position and rush out and buy RATM’s first album. They are such a monstrous rock band.

Juju said it best when he said,
“As for the “screaming”… It is ABOUT anger, it is about disgust with the system and the repression and manipulation in it. MORE people should be screaming about it !!”

Juju, dude, I couldn’t have said it any better. Rage Against the Machine is such an important powerful band that the defy genre. They are a force. And their political statements make me shiver. Trust me JR, get yourself that first album and you will not put it down for at least a week.

  36. Edwin Decker
The Old-Ass, Idiot Judge Who is a Heavy Metal Conspirator-
You know, I didn’t really like your opinion 3 out of the last 5 weeks, but you are actually really funny on these blogs.

A few of us were actually thinking the same thing about the ‘Heavy Metal Conspiracy’ but it just happened to work out this way. Judge #2 said that Surreal Time sounded best on their 2nd to last song, but Edwin said that, Surreal Time started off bad and progressively got worse.” Too bad the judges aren’t a little more consistent with each other. Judge # 1 said Leather and Country don’t go together–Has he ever seen old Johnny Cash pics, Montgomery Gentry or Garth brooks etc. There is lots of leather in Country & Cowboy hats, and boots etc.
Anger Is A Gift nailed it, hands down they have done their homework-Big Time- Congrats Brothers. Travelin Band singer, very good, tight group.
Juke Box were graded on an Amy Winehouse song that even Amy can’t sing- wow.
Life Like nailed the Billy Joel, and the Simple Minds song sounded really good, according to everyone but Ed. They also sang the ACDC better than Brian Jonson can.

He had a few issues, but Ed you told them that you had a good idea, you said, “Why don’t you guy’s find a singer.” Wow, they are a hard working band, just like the rest of us and they are participants like all of us. They had the trio sounding really full.
The judges are mere participants too, so lets not go overboard on the dis-respecting.

Over all, I had a blast and the difference in opinion makes it interesting.
Daisy’s Cafe is awesome and so is the Grove.
Thanks Viejas, thanks to the stage crew and the fans and thank you judges.

“I will bring some Q-Tips for you next week, Edwin, so you can actually hear the non-Metal bands.” :-j

  37. frank studmek Says:

I attended the band contest this past Sunday and I must say I was impressed with the Jukebox band. I think that you judges did not give them fair comments. They actually had no monitors for the first three songs due to technical malfunction on the part of the staff and had to deal with it accordingly. Consequently, it was extremely difficult to hear one another and the pitch and quality could not help but be affected. I think that overall they were very tight, went from song to song very well, and the diversity of the musicians should have been noted on this blog! The versatility was something to see and I believe the lead female singer was an awesome attribute to the band! Of course, the bottom line is judges, you obviously prefer hard, punk rock to the other venues that were demonstrated on Sunday evening and were not able to set aside your personal preferences when judging. Screaming appears to take front row seat to true talent and professional voices! Perhaps a review of what singing is and the definition of shouting should be studied more thourally.

  38. Frank, last year, the finalists were a blues band (Lady Dottie and the Diamonds) a motown band (Detroit Underground) a top 40 funk and soul band (Crush) and a Johnny Cash Tribute band (Cash’d Out). Cash’d Out took the grand prize. Nuff said.

  39. Hey sports fans. I play the guitar in Anger is a Gift.

Thanks to everyone that appreciates how fucking hard we try to make the show JUST like a R.A.T.M. concert. Sorry some folks think it’s malarkey how we scream and the guitars are too loud and annoying…….It took me a long time to get that sound man! However, we are here to show California what we have been up to and we want to gig all over to spread the love, anger, and passion for what we dig about R.A.T.M.

Good Luck to all the musicians that worked so hard for this.

Thats all folks! I’ll let you all get back to smack chat! Have fun.

Jaime Valle a heavy metal fan? not buying that.

  41. WOW! This blog site has been really busy! I’m kinda suprised but also excited to see people so passionate about cover and tribute bands!
Congrats to the bands that have made it this far and good luck in the finals. I haven’t been able to come out this year, but I was a part of the competition last year. For those giving the judges such a hard time, I know sometimes its hard to accept it when the band your rooting for doesnt win, and you know, the band that you love might just be as great as you feel they are, but for one reason or another, they just didn’t shine on their night. I think in order for a band to win, they really need to stand out from the pack and do something that really catches the judges attention in one way or another. If it wasnt your night to win, it just wasn’t. But there will always be more competitions AND you are getting great exposure in a fantastic venue. And of course as they always say, you never know who’s watching. In our case last year, that’s exactly what happened and we have had many opportunites and doors have opened up since the competition, even beyond the cover band world. So, all I can say is, stay positive, have fun, think big and GOOD LUCK!!!!

  42. Richard Says:

I enjoyed the bands on the 22nd. Everyone had their own style and fanbase. I get it. I’ll be back even enduring the 100 mile drive to do so. If there is a chance to see a bunch of new or unsigned bands with a chance to find a brand new favorite band I’ll go. Once or twice if it looks promising. After all, there is always the blackjack tables. I trusted jujus’ judgement. After all…She turned me on to Wolfmother and many years ago NIN. What could go wrong? After being completely blown away by Anger is a Gift. I can’t wait to see them again. The judge laughed at not being able to get a clear picture of the wild man lead singer. I still have a half a roll to shoot of this band but I don’t expect to see anything but raw energy when I do process it! I found my new favorite band. There is room for another but I’m not looking. If they are playing I’ll be there. The judge has to stop calling juju “dude” though. She is as Rockin’ a chick as there ever will be. Peace

  43. SD Music Fan Says:

Traveling Band keep traveling away from us.
    Jukebox is broken.

  44. OMG LOL!
    …thanks for the summary.

  45. Random Dude. Says:

All these blogs are summarized by Angie…
Because your favorite band didnt win, dont be angry at the ones that did! And for all the old people that say screaming is not an art, buy a Rage album, sing the lyrics (with screams) and see how well you’ll do. (Drink some honey for the ruptured vocal chords you’ll have)
Just because its not the music you grew up on, it’s still music. WHether you like it or not. Dont slam the screaming. My dad raised me on the Beatles. I grew listining to Rock/Metal, my kids are gonna be raised on Beatles,Rock/Metal and whatever that is out when they’re growing up! I bet it’ll be something that you older guys wont appreciate also!! It is a cycle! SO all you guys relax and Anger is a Gift, GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!

  46. SD Music Fan Says:

Sureal Time plays paid gigs on a regular bases. (4 hours of music)
Traveling Band gets paid gigs, on a regular bases. (4-5 Hours of music)
Jukebox is playing paid gigs, on a regular base. (5 hours of music)
Lifelike is playing paid gigs, on a regular bases. (6 hrs of music)
Anger is a Gift needs paid gigs, on a regular bases. (90 min. of music)

And all of these bands love what they are, working so hard, doing; playing music and bringing smiles to faces.

Thank You God for this awesome gift of MUSIC !!!!

  48. Hey sd music fan!!! DEATHBED ???? LIFELIKE??? Are you out of your fu=cking mind? We will out play anyone !! We do 6 hour shows and take a 2 minute pissbreak . We might of had a rough vocal night the other evening..but as even ED says musically we were close to perfect. We love playing and we love the diversity of our 200 + songs that we do…
We might not be the perfect cover band to Viejas judges, but beautiful female fans, who love to come up on our small stage @ surf n saddle (ok, not the biggest venue) and shake and shimmy to us playing, is much better than hearing 3 people criticize you for trying to figure, out what THEY want to hear. OH BY THE WAY THRES ONLY THREE OF US
Again I agree EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THERE OPINION!! Peace, Paulie

  49. Shaaron, i totally agree with EVERYTHING you said. I mean, why would Ed not criticize some bands that preformed songs within their skill range moderately well, then go on to bash a band that clearly needed something more? It’s just cruel! the only thing I thought Life Like needed where some matching clothes, the lead singer had a whit shirt, the guitarist had a white shirt, but did the drummer have a white shirt? No, he did not. Come on guy, get with the program. Ed you are an ass, how dare you shell out constructive criticism like you know what you’re talking about.

  50. Does Ed play an instrument, or sing, or play in a band?
This is just a Horse and Pony show, and Ed is in charge of the Carnival Rides. . .
SD Fan #2, on the topic of paid gigs has it right-on the money-

    SD Fan #1 who ridiculed all bands – except A. I. A. G.
You should read SD Fan #2’s comment below your comment.
It may open you up to reality, a bit. (Hopefully)

  51. Man… people get pretty nasty here. This is a music competition that is judged by the same judges every week. The rules are the same for everyone and everyone has the same exact chance to put on their best show.
Sometimes even really good bands have a bad night. Nobody should assume that the performance they see on the single night of the competition is the sum total of that band’s quality.
That being said, the judges have only ONE performance to evaluate. So, if you had a less than perfect night… um, that sucks. If it was “the best performance of your career”… good timing! Either way, just deal!
I SERIOUSLY think that the people who think the judges are swayed by metal rock must be out of their minds. Have you SEEN the judges? They don’t scream “metal” fans to me! I’m actually very impressed that they would give a RATM tribute band the win. Obviously, not the safe choice. I’ve been to several of the weekly competitions and I truly believe that they won the night because they were the BEST on that night.
To the band members trying to fight it out over comments the judges left for you. ~ it is a meaningless battle. You just look pathetic and like sore losers. So you had a bad night. You still have gigs and fans and “hotties” who love you and your music. You will probably never see the judges again. Get over it and move on. At least you had the opportunity like the rest of the bands to play a great venue!

  52. Rick, to answer your questions…

Ed has never played in a band. Ed tried to play several instruments but sucked at them all very badly. Ed cannot sing his way out of a torn envelope. Ed is 25 percent deaf from a line drive that hit him square on the ear hole about 7 years ago.

However! Ed is an audiophile. He has purcased over 5000 CD’s, albums, and CD’s. cassettes and 8 tracks. Ed has bartended in live music venues for the last 25 years, including the legendary Bachannal, 4th and B, Winston’s, and Blind Melons to name a few. Ed has covered music in several magazines for over 2 decades. Ed has organized or staffe music festivals such as Baja Bash, SD Indie Fest, Coachella and Street Scene, and now North by NorthPark.

If you addd up all the shows Ed has seen between his bartending gigs, writing assignments, music festivals and all the shows he just went to see because he loves going to shows, it would probably add up to about 10 thousand.

Basically, Ed is a well-informed fan of music and brings the non-technical, non-musical MUSIC FAN element of judging to the process. I think there’s room for at least one of those, no?

  53. My comments are centered on the format of this competition. I was frankly
embarrassed by the arrogance of the judges. Especially Ed. Eduardo
thinks he’s auditioning for Simon’s (another arrogant egomaniac) spot
    on American Idol.
Well Ed, you’re a STAR! A non-musical, non technical STAR! (by your
own admission). Your comments made Paris Hilton look sublimely
    intelligent.
My question here is why copy the American Idol Format using judges whose EGOS make them believe that this competition is about THEM. I came to
Viejas to enjoy some new talent in the area (and they were ALL interesting). I didn’t come to Viejas to listen to 3 Egomaniacs who
think this is THEIR BIG CHANCE at future TV Stardom.

  54. I feel like I need the defend myself for participating in this blog. Thanks for the props, Seth. I think you read my comments with the “tone” I was writing. As for Ed; The few times I have had short conversations with him at the contest, I got the feeling that he was a super nice guy, informed, and knowledgeable. I like and agree with 99% of what he has said. The judging has been very fair, and Jaime’s ear is 100%.

I am the leader of my band, “Haute Flash”, which is playing on the last night of the contest. I have attended every Sunday to keep my band well informed on what the bands are doing, how the judges are reacting, and why the winners win. I am learning from the experience.

When I was in my teens and 20s I played in a couple of metal bands, toured, and had a great time. I soon realized, that to be a full time musician in San Diego, you had to play what the people wanted. If I had my way, I would still be Janis in a Janis Joplin tribute, or an Eagles tribute or a Beatles tribute. The Eagles and Beatles tributes are not female friendly, the Janis tribute, as with the metal bands, can trash your throat in an hour. So I have found a formula that works for me; Classic rock-show-dance-high energy-all female-work all the time band.

Although I am a career musician, I am also a foster parent. We foster parents have to follow rules mandated by the state. I am very good at following rules. I take rules seriously. If I don’t like the rules, I will lobby to have them changed, I have done this on a county level and on a state level, and succeeded. Although I hate the confines of rules, it is good to know that they apply to everybody, and the playing ground is equal. This has been very apparent in this contest. It doesn’t matter what style you are playing, it only seems to matter how well you do what you do.

So, congratulations to A.I.A.G. Well done. You rocked! Your energy is unbelievable! You are able to lobby your cause in a forum that works for you. A couple of my foster kids listen to RATM, and for that I am very grateful that they have iPods, with ear buds. And I am sure that they are happy that they don’t have to listen to my stations when we are in the car!

    Viva la difference!

  55. Bride Of SD Music Fan Says:

Sureal Time your time is up.
Turn in the instruments and get the singer some training.
Bad country and souless Aretha has no market in SD.
I looked in the Reader and they have no paying gigs.

Anger Is A Gift Thumbs Up
    Thought they won hands down
Not my choice in music but very good at what they did.

Traveling Band has a boring singer who can karaoke CCR
with a average band backing him up.
The music was old and a bore when the real CCR did it the first time around.
I did not see them playing anywhere in the Reader

Jukebox are a fanatastic band! Looks Energy and Passion.
Rehab was right on the money.
I see they are the only real working band that played tht night.

Lifelike I did not see so no comment.

  56. GREY… maybe you didn’t realize that this is a COMPETITION. That means there are judges. Those judges need to have a certain amount of celebrity and experience to become judges. The bands who choose to compete know that they are going to be hearing the judges evaluation. It makes it so much more fun from a strickly audience point of view. We get to hear, first hand, what the judges actually think, in THEIR opinions about the band and their performance, appearance and crowd appeal.
You don’t really think that every band that competes is “just great” ~ do you? Well, they aren’t. I think the judges have been VERY positive, sometimes overly so, with bands that at times have really put on some pretty lame shows. Your comparison of Ed to Simon from American Idal is silly. He isn’t mean to anyone. He is expected to state his opinion and give constructive critisism. How exactly are you thinking that the JUDGES are going to get famous from this competition… it isn’t on TV and they aren’t going to be getting a year long performance contract if they win. I’m pretty sure the only people who know they are judges are the bands in the competition.

So, anyway, if you can’t stand the heat, stay away from the competition. Lying to bands to make them feel better than they are is childish and useless. Perhaps you can grow up a little and perhaps get a little thicker skin before you head out again. The bands are competing for a $20,000 prize, which, in my book, is some serious cash… and if you want to win, you have to bring your best GAME.

If the judges didn’t like you or your band, better luck next time.

  57. I love the critique part of this contest.

I’ve had beer spilled on my Les Paul by many a drunk rocker declaring me the best guitarist… EVER! :::oops, sorry man, here’s a napkin:::

…and beautiful female fans shake and shimmy to us playing. (hasn’t every musician, DJ, kareoke singer, etc.)

So it was refreshing to hear some thoughtful analysis even though it tarnished my ego.

  58. By the way people, the Cash’d Out Interview is up now.

  59. Ed!
Wow! What an uproar you guys started this week! It’s fun to see the controversy change this week. New consperiacies abound! AIAG and Travelin Band (TB) tied in my opinion. AIAG would have been my pick had it not been for the annoying way he kept “introducing” each song! Man! if you are playing your tribute’s songs, no introdution should be needed. The fans will know it and those that don’t will learn if they want to know. TB was tight, transitioned from one song to the next flawlessly, but were boring to watch. Needed to move around. AIAG moved around A LOT, but didn’t transistion as well. However!! Brian… your guitar playing was OUTSTANDING!! Your talent shined through the entire evening! Even through all the screaming :-)
I cannot believe my first two picks were tribute bands! Shut up Ed! All in all though another fun night! Bring back the COVER bands!!
    Later……..

  60. Just A Fan Says:

From being at the last few showcases here is how I would have judged it

    AIAG A+
    Lifelike B*
    TravelingBand B
    Jukebox C
    SureelTim D-

I think they should audition the bands next year before they let them into the contest. This would eliminate the C and D grade bands from the list and make it more fun for the crowd and the judges. It makes me chuckle to read the losers chastise the judges here. If they would have won Ed and the rest would have been BFF. Patti said it best

“If you can’t stand the heat, stay away from the competition”

  61. Private Parties and Corporate gigs don’t advertise in the reader, Fool !! Go to School!

  62. Patti,
Take another prozac and write me in the morning. When all the judges congradulate the 2nd band and tell them that they are the winner, before the next three bands even play, it doesn’t look very professional. This is what some of the bloggers are complaining about. It just seemed a bit odd. Iv’e never seen them congratulate any band, while judging them. They told Monsters of Rock that their band was flawless, and they did not give them one critizism, but the judges never congratulated them, telling them that they had a chance to win the $20,000.
However, I believe that they picked the right band to win this week. They just need to keep their emotions out of the judgement seat, and act as judges.

  63. Sorry Mistress, I don’t do “emotionless.” Music is ALL about emotions and I have no reservation about expressing them.

Furthermore, I would like to correct you on your notion that the judges called out AIAG as the winner after their set. The other two judges said nothing of the sort. I was the only one who said anything close to what you are describing and what I said was that they had a “Really good shot” at winning either first, second, or third place, which was and remains true. Anything can happen, and I have no doubt it will, but that’s how it stands, for me, right now. Sorry if the truth hurts.

P.S. I liked Monsters of Rock even better.

  64. R I G H T ! ! !
Judge # 1 Congratulations and you have a chance to go all the way.
Judge # 2 Wow!! Congratulations !!!! You may be able to win $20,000.
Judge # 3 Slurp, slurp, drool, drool huh. . . . Congratulations, huh, huh. .
    You are great, you are incredible. . . . .Congratulations. . .

    Ya, ur right,
you were a bit different than the others, in your response, #3 :-)
    Thanks for mentioning that.

P.S. Monsters of Rock is the bast, so far, 6 one 9/A.I.A.G. 2nd.
Help is great, but Paul needs help, vocally.

  65. Just curious, how many of you have ever tried to be or been in the real entertainment/music industry? How many of you have ever had to deal with a real record label, marketing department, vocal coaches, producers, A&R or even just recorded in the studio? How many of you have ever been IN the music industry, I’m not talking about cover bands, I’m talking about the real deal? Because the truth of the matter is, the judges judging this competition are cake compared to the real world. The entertainment industry is probably one of the most harsh, critical, mean and rude industries out there. If you can’t deal with it in a cover band competition, then you could never make it in the real music industry. You think your thin? Lose 10 pounds. You think you sing like an angel? Get a voice coach immediately. You think you have style? You need to hire a stylist. You think you have experience performing? You need to get a real following, not just friends and family. You think you are good? You suck…, NEXT???!!!! As I’ve said before, don’t let this kind of thing get you down. not the bands or the fans. Both need to understand that this experience will make the band a stronger and better band, whether you win or not. Just take this experience and learn from it and do whatever you feel you need to do to improve. You may even come up with something even more kick ass and impressive. And also remember, that there have been some amazing bands and singers that have been passed up or “next’d” only to come back stronger and prove those people wrong. Don’t be a sore loser. If you are really as good as you and your fans believe, then you WILL do something really great.

  67. Just A Fan Says:

    JV
Quite Impressive resume I must say!

I am glad that the bands have someone like you to constructively critique
their performance. Some bands and fan base do not understand that they do not have the elusive “it” factor.

Mom and Dad, wifey and neighbors tell them they should be “stars” and when a objective person tells them they do not have “it” they shriek and stammer and blame everyone else (judges) for the average performance they did. They need to look in the mirror first.

Mistress of SD Music Fan is example. She/He is either

#1 The wife/gf with one of the acts

#2 A musician from one of the acts that lost to AIAG

#3 A girl that ed screwed over back in high school and she stalks him everywhere.

Get over it Mistress and get a life.

Thank you Jamie for your dedication to the San Diego music scene.

  68. It seems that a few bands have had problems with the monitors. I have heard that the monitor mix is set, and no adjustments will be made. So is there a real problem, or are the complaining bands either too loud or not located near them?

In the real world, if the monitors are not loud enough, you 1. Turn them up, or 2. Turn down the band’s stage volume. In the contest, the monitors are set. If you turn down the stage volume you lose that loud punch that makes you sound full and powerful.

So, I would like to ask 6one9, Monsters, and AIAG how they felt or coped with what some of the other, “less powerful” bands, have complained of.

The sound out front is fantastic. AIAG singer, you were on the dance floor almost as much as you were on the stage. How big of a difference is there?

  69. Random Dude. Says:

    Chi Chi’s Crist!!
AIAG sure left a pretty mixed impression! Do you guys think there will be a bigger turn out on the 27th when they perform again??

  70. Just a fan, LOL @ #3! Maybe!

  71. Shaaron,

The difference between what the audience hears and what the band hears through the monitors is huge. As the drummer I sit behind the house speakers and usually behind the amps, so having a good monitor mix is critical for me to keep my place and to sing on pitch. Our singer and I have totally gotten used to an in ear monitor system which we were not allowed to use for the competition, so in rehearsal I just went without to try to get used to it. On our night I could hear the instruments well, but barely could hear any vocals.

As you said, the settings were the same for all. so you just have to go with it. I heard from the other guys the monitors the the monitor up toward the front of the stage sounded great.

  72. Oh my god I should read what I type. That engrish is berry bad. I meant to say the monitors at the front of the stage sounded good I was told.

  73. Has anyone else noticed that week 5 has generated nearly double the comments than the next closest week. I started this weeks blog being rather critical of the judges and Edwin in particular. After a week to think about it and read other opinions, I’ve softened a bit. It’s all for fun anyway. I still don’t see AIAG winning the whole thing though, (I just can’t help being a pain in the ass).

  74. Yo whats up guys..

Im in the band A.I.A.G., and I have to say that reading all of your comments have not only been entertaining but also some what insightful. Thanks to everyone who comes and supports the event, the judges, stage crew, staff and audience. All the other bands that played on the 22nd were sick. The singer of the first band was not only talented but hott as well. Once I heard the CCR band, I bought a white russian and immediately wanted to bowl (RIP Donny). Jukebox was killer with Heartbreaker and Lifelike dominated that AC/DC song!!

To all the people that are hating on us, it’s cool. Mad respect for not giving respect (haha). I realize that RATM isn’t for everyone but you can’t deny their dominance of the ’90’s and influence on all music thereafter. After all, they have won Grammys. Anyway, we try to do the best we can and thank you for being open minded.

I hope to see all of you at the Semis, good luck to all the bands!! Thanks again..

“If you will it dude. it is no dream..”

  75. WoW, after reading all the comments about what the definition of singing is, and the ENERGY Anger is A Gift put out. I know I missed out on a great performance. You know I’m marking my calendar. I’m a BIG R.A.T.M fan! I definitely won’t miss the July 27th performance.

Things will never change until you get so ANGRY, that you just have to do something to make the change.

$4.55 for a gallon of gas! When are you going to get ANGRY. Soon, I hope.

  76. Tom, Thanks for the reply. My drummer is a lead vocalist, as well as the rest of us. So we will have to grin and bare it.

Dave, Why don’t we get AIAG to sing/scream about the gas prices on the White House Lawn? Maybe some of the “old fart” politicians will do something just to stop the noise.

And why don’t we all VOTE for the candidate that has a plan to do something about it! (The gas, not the noise).

This has been a long blog. I’m looking forward to the 29th.

  77. How’s it going Shaaron? To answer your question, I know Sun. night most of the bands had monitor problems including us as well. We’ve played in many of places with way worse sound issues than these and had to overcome them by just really focusing on the backbone of the band(drums) and keeping good eye contact with each other. I know for myself I try to keep an ear open for all the sounds individually and make minor adjustments by slowing, or speeding up my rhythms, stretching out a lyric, extending a yell, shortening a yell where ever needed to keep the flow steady and smooth. Believe me when I tell you there have been times when the sound was just horrible and ridiculous because of snotty Mr. know it all sound tech’s, and If you think we looked angry Sun. I can instantly change a lyric to tell you how pissed we feel about the matter and bring attention to the shitty work of the location(Santa Monica location in particular.) I was pleased with sound that night off and on stage but I know my dudes had something to say about it, not to bad though. We’ll be bringing this up next time around for sure, everyone do your part and put your words in to the staff, if it’s in demand why not right? We got to have the best, to be our best!

If you absolutely need something changed because it might effect your performance, figure something out, ask questions, rig something up, move monitors, pretty much do what you have to do… MacGyver style yeah! Big up’s to the Lighting crew, simply great work! Thanks guys! For the drum issue of mics and symbol stands moving and falling (we noticed this problem 2 weeks prior while doing our homework) ask your trusty stage man. to drop some sand bags on em. If not? There’s nothing a little duct tape can’t handle.

If only the gas price problem was that easy to fix Shaaron! haha I hope we place in this competition just so I can finally fill my tank to full, with 93 octain. damn! it’s been a while…

This Blog is a great tool to have for all bands and I have learned very much over the last week! Thanks Edwin! Genius!! Genius!

  78. Hey Johnny,
Thanks for the reply. I don’t think my drummer, a woman, is going to need to sandbag the drums, but thanks for the heads up on the monitor department. As far as gas, I use super too, and it costs almost a hundred bucks to fill up, and I only get 325 miles out of it! I have to have the big SUV to carry the SVT and PA and all the stuff I own for the band. If I see you at the contest this week, I’ll say “hi”. Thanks again.

  79. Thank you, JV, for your honesty, and most of all for your courteous demeanor. This has really separated you from the rest. And to top it off, you are an actual musician, and a well respected one to boot.

    Thanks again,

    Rick

  80. Rage Fan Says:

For all of you that keep making fun of a band that doesn’t know how to sing and only screams, yells, and raps…I’ve got news for you.. First off, I was at Coachella when Rage Against the Machine reunited and performed there in 2007. I should mention that they drew in the largest crowd in the history of Coachella with nearly 100,000 attendees. I was waiting online on the Ticketmaster website at 9:59am counting the seconds down till 10am hit so I could refresh and buy the tickets. 10am hit…I refreshed and was still unable to get the tickets. They sold out instantly! I called up Ticketmaster and they told me, “Sorry, the Rage night was all sold out but tons of tickets were still available for the night that Bjork and even Red Hot Chili Peppers were going to play.” I was in disbelief! How could that many tickets sell out that quickly?! I must say that that is REALLY impressive for a band that just raps, yells, screams, and masturbates with his guitar…haha Shaaron knows what I’m talking about. It’s kinda hard to make fun of a guy that was featured by Rolling Stones as one of the Top 20 new guitarists and ranked #26 on Rolling Stone’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” The show itself was crazy!! We met people from all around the world saying that they couldn’t wait for Rage to take the stage! The show was incredibly good! Out of all the different concerts I’ve been to, including multiple genres of music, RATM at Coachella was the best performance I have ever been to! So to all you haters out there, you are all just biased to all your own tastes of music. I”m sorry that the band that played your favorite song or genre of music didn’t win. I’m sorry to say it, but I’m biased too. I’m sure I don’t like the type of old people music you guys might like.. haha It’s all about energy and getting the crowd excited. I LOVE Creedance but Travelin Band just simply lacked the energy. Voice and music was perfect though. Country isn’t really my thing, but SurrealTime was really good. The other bands I mentioned just didn’t quite hit their songs like the real ones. Just like Edwin said, a cover band must live up to the real band and do exactly as the original band did. I’m sorry to say but Lifelike and Jukebox just simply did not sound like the originals. One of my friends that was there is a diehard 80’s lover and simply said Lifelike sounded nothing like the original. I, myself, like the Killers and Aerosmith and the male singer of Jukebox murdered those songs! So give Anger some credit.. put your biased thoughts aside cause most of us probably don’t like your favorite songs or music either. Anger puts on an awesome show and does what all the bands should be trying to do…..IMITATE THE ORIGINAL BAND!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anger did that perfectly!!! I’m sorry but if the voice doesn’t sound like the original, it simply kills the song!!

  81. Ok, so I could not make it yesterday…. who won Ed? I’m anxious to hear how things went last night. I’m so bummed that I couldn’t be there, I feel like I’m missing out :-( Waiting on your post…

  82. Hey Rage Fan,
It took a mighty long time to say that you liked AIAG. Although, and I have said this several times, I am not a metal fan, I thought AIAG did the best job that night. I think that a cover band can do their own take on a song, and it’s still a cover, but if you like it to sound like the record, that’s fine too. (I love the way Earth Wind and Fire covered the Beatles “Got To Get You Into My Life”) See what I mean?

Patty, you should’ve been there last night. 80z All Stars won, but the first band was the most entertaining. I think everybody will be on the same page on that one. I’m looking forward to the comments that are coming…

  83. I’ve been enjoying coming down to see all these bands i do not play any music instruments im just a fan i thought the rage band kicked ass and i’ve seen 619 play day in and day out at secondwind just like 5 miles high but I thought cold shower was a really good band how do I find out where they are playing next.

  84. Viejas Vixen Says:

Thanks for the Cold Shower compliment. Their website with upcoming gigs is http://www.coldshowerband.com. Hope to see you there – Be sure to introduce yourself.
