Semi Finals (Round 2)
[Author's Note: [Author’s note: If this is your first time visiting the UMC blog, you might want to check out the INTRODUCTION first.]
And the winners are…
Anger is a Gift and Detroit Underground! Congratulations you two bands who are totally different from each other but both rock in your own ways! We’ll see you in the finals.
So, wow. What a great night of music. All the bands were excellent. Also, with respect to the vitriol dispatched upon the judges, the night went a lot smoother than last week. Not only did we only receive a handful of angry comments by disgruntled fans (compared with the dump-truck-full we received last week), but the losing bands themselves were beyond gracious. The guys from both Gin Pistons and Old School came up to us, shook our hands, said “Thank you,” and smiled the whole time.
I can’t tell you how much those smiles meant to us. It’s like the smiles were saying, “Hey man, we get it. It’s just a game, and we lost… this time.”
The drummer for Gin Piston, bless his warmy, fuzzy soul, even gave me their original CD to send to The Mother, who has become a GP fan. The Mother will be delighted.
Indeed, the only people who gave any of the judges any perceptible level of grief was Danielle, my wife, and I, who viciously attacked Alicia on the ride home. But we’ll get to that in a bit.
Just like last week’s blog post, I don’t think it’s necessary to give you all a play-by-play account of each performance. I’ve already written about these bands before, and most of you were there last night anyway, so I thought I’d focus more on the scoring and, maybe at the end, talk a bit about some of the differences between each band, and also, whether each band improved on their first performance in the preliminaries.
Now, a lot of people approached me after the winners were announced and asked which band got which scores. I told them I would be happy to publish my scores on the blog, and if Danielle and Alicia gave permission, that I would publish their scores as well. And they agreed. So let’s take a look shall we?
I’ll start with the db readings. (To understand how crowd noise is applied to the judge’s score sheets please review the INTRODUCTION). The loudest crowd response was received by Detroit Underground (118.7dB), then Old School (117.5dB) followed by Anger is a Gift (115.8dB) and lastly Gin Piston (114.1dB).
Here are the scores and rankings per each judge.
Danielle LoPresti (Judge #1)
Anger is a Gift = 88
Old School = 88
Detroit Underground = 79.5
Gin Pistons = 62
Alicia Champion (Judge #2)
Detroit Underground = 87.5
Anger is a Gift = 86
Old School = 77.5
Gin Piston = 62
Ed Decker (Judge #3)
Anger is a Gift = 83 points
Old School = 82 points
Detroit Underground = 80.5
Gin Pistons = 72
As you can see, two of the judges did not have Detroit Underground advancing. Keep in mind though, these are the scores before crowd response was factored, so a quick tally of these numbers will tell us what the order would have been had crowd response not been factored.
Anger is a Gift (257)
Old School (247.5)
Detroit Underground (247)
Gin Piston (196)
So, basically, the main reason Detroit Underground is in the finals, and Old School is not, is because of crowd noise. Oh, and also because of Alicia’s dementia. You know, the dementia that caused her to rate Detroit Underground over Old School.
And boy did we give her a hard time about that. See Alicia, Danielle, my wife (who we’ll call “W”), and I often carpool to Viejas. As soon as we got into the car to go home, I turned to Alicia and said, “Girl, what is your major malfunction?” Why on Earth did you give DU a better score than Old School?” And with that, everybody in the car got up in Alicia’s grill:
Dani, who had Old School as a tie with Anger for the win, gave Alicia a whole ration of shit. And W., my wife, who damn near fell into a full state of depression upon hearing that Old School had lost, was just hammering poor Alicia with insults. Naturally, I was having my way with her as well.
It was quite fun, actually, and nice, for once, not to be the lone person getting jumped by everybody else in the car. To Alicia’s credit though, that girl stood her ground. She said (I’m paraphrasing) that Detroit Underground is a much stronger group of musicians, playing much more difficult material, and that was her opinion and she stands by it.
I said, “Alicia – it’s great that we have a diversity of opinions, and your opinions are always welcome in this car… Even when your opinions are so very wrong, wrong, WRONG.”
Please do not misunderstand; Detroit Underground is a great band. They took second place last year! And that wasn’t because the other bands sucked. Even when they’re not on the top of their game, they’re still a top shelf act. But Old School, well they surprised the hell out of me. Talk about stepping it up! When they played in the prelims, I thought they were good, but last night, they were effin great; just a sliver better than DU, but it’s all about slivers now, because we’re in the semi-finals. At this level, little things become big, important things, like a sliver of glass in your foot – such a tiny thing, can cause such disparity.
Such as the sliver that was DU’s suboptimal start. They were a little stiff at first, and sloppy, especially vocally; not at all up to par with their previous performance. And they seemed to be just going through the motions.
As Danielle said (paraphrased), “Even if you’ve played that song a hundred times, you have to find a way to make it sound like the first time.”
For me, that early part of the set, you could just tell they had played those songs a hundred times. Kudos to DU, however, for pulling it together in the second half, and for crushing it on the finale, and for winning the crowd noise game (another testament to their greatness), but for me, I think Old School was – I won’t say “the better band,” rather, that Old School had “the better night.”
So yeah, we gave Alicia a beat down for that. But, in the name of fairness, I thought it prudent to give Alicia the floor for a moment to explain her decision.
PLEASE don’t get me wrong – I LOVED Old School and personally wanted to take every single one of those boys home with me (and yes, I’m still a dyke). They had passion bursting at the seams, they looked gorgeous, their song selection KILLED, and I loved their original take on each song in their set. Were there intonation and tuning issues throughout their performance? Yes. Do I have to take that into account? Absolutely.
I thought lead singer Brian was wonderful, and yes, I would love to have him sing on something I’m producing. In fact, I’ve already started fantasizing about producing a big rock duet of some sort, JUST to feature both him and Danielle on a song together – that’s how much I loved his tone. I just feel that for about 50% of his set, he pushed so hard that it affected his pitch. He’s got a beautiful scream, when applied correctly. But when you scream so hard to the point you compromise pitch… well… that’s a problem.
Then we have tuning. Les Paul studio-models and capos. Ugh.
I don’t want to blame him for this because it really is the guitar…. but at the same time, if you’re rehearsing this exact set (for a competition of this grandeur, no less), you REALLY need to take this into account. “Ironic,” while truly fun in its third verse adaptation, was a tonal mess across the board. The lead guitar sounded a half-step (one fret) higher than the rhythm guitar, the lead vocals were matching neither, and this issue persisted thru to the next song. In fact, while the energy was great, the lead guitar solo in “You Give Love a Bad Name,” sounded so sharp (as in opposite of flat), it made me want to bury my head.
The background vocals were also hit or miss. 50% of the time they were spot on, 50% they weren’t, and sometimes…. they weren’t there at all because the lead guitarist/ background singer missed his cues.
They regrouped and took care of these problems before closing with Rush, and my god… did they finish with a bang. That closing performance was the first in this entire competition to bring me to my feet in applause.
Detroit Underground – I agree with both Ed and Danielle in thinking this performance was considerably weaker than that from their preliminary round. However, I still believed them to be the strongest act of the night, next to Anger Is a Gift. They did have some lead vocal issues, and the pocket was lost in the horn break of “Fire.” Regardless, the background vocals were spot on 100% of the time, and the musicians that make up the rhythm section of this ensemble are so talented, it’s humbling. This was the only band of the night with which I experienced constant improvisational flavors. The keyboardist, guitarist (and especially) the bassist, were throwing in all sorts of juicy, delicious line clichés and subtleties, it inspired me to go home and practice my chord scales. There’s no way I can mark down a band that brings me to that place. They are truly a musician’s group, and I related to that. As a producer/ arranger, these are aspects I’m trained to hear. I also know full well that details such as these always go unnoticed by the general listener, which is all the more reason I felt the need to acknowledge them.
I will say this though – If Detroit Underground plays a show like they did last night for Finals, I’m not confident they’ll have a shot at the prize. Even Alice and The Cooper Gang will give them a hard run for their money if they’re not 100% on their game.
Alicia Champion – Fill-in for Judge #1
Hey gang, Ed again. So, as you can clearly see, Alicia really should get tested for that dementia problem I mentioned earlier. Although she was right about the mortal danger DU is currently facing. They had better bring their A-game if they want to qualify for any cash. Because I’m starting to think Detroit Underground might be the Alex Rodriguez of music contests.
Like A-Rod, Detroit Underground always seems to play spectacularly in the regular season, but once they get into the playoffs they struggle.
As for Anger is a Gift, I don’t think there was any question in anyone’s mind (except the people who hate hardcore rock/rap) that Anger was going to advance to the finals. But, like DU, their set wasn’t as good as the prelim round either. But even Anger is a Gift’s B-game is several times better than most bands’ A-game. And when they vomited out “Killing in the Name of,” all the little slivers of error were forgotten, especially after hearing the shocking climax, with the singer howling, “Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me!” over and over like a banshee.
And not just any banshee, but a heavy metal banshee – a bänshee – who wears studded leather bracelets, black concert tee shirts, and who shakes his fists in the air like he’s trying to punch holes the ceiling so all the other a bänshees can get a look at what they’re missing.
Finally, Gin Pistons, chin up, ok? You guys were outgunned and that’s all there is to it. But I would check out a GP show any day of the week. Because you’re a ton of fun to watch and hear, you picked great songs, and you definitely stepped it up from last go-round. In fact, now that I think of it, it was the two losing bands who improved on their first performance, and the two winners who had deteriorated. So really, had any of these bands taken a half-step in either direction, we might be seeing a totally different finals lineup.
Anyway, that’s it for this week, except, to say, “Wow, are we here already? Are the finals really upon us? Well I, for one, simply cannot wait: Monsters of Rock, Anger is a Gift, Alice and the Cooper, Gang Detroit Underground – you are all class acts and it’s an honor and a privilege to be the sonovabitch who gets to decide your fate.
Muah-ha-ha-ha-ha.

All righty then, here we go to the finish line!! HA!
July 28, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Seeing the judges scores surpises me that Alicia had DU ahead of Anger. I would have put big $$ down on her putting Anger at the very top. The way she totally was rocking out to Anger, I was ready to start accusing her of having bais and not giving School or DU their due. Alicia, I humbly appologize for doubting your professionalism and admire you for seeing the musical abilities that DU was exhibiting!
Old School!!! You guys ROCKED!! Loved your professionalism when you had the problems early on. If I hadn’t noticed Casey come flying up on stage, I wouldn’t have noticed anything. In fact I mentioned to one of the judges that I barely remembered you from the first rounds. But once you guys finished last night, you became my #1 pick to move on w/ DU. (I had Anger & DU originally) Don’t worry though… all you guys were wonderful eye candy as well as candy for our musical sweet tooth too, and you will do well.
So…. on to the finals! What a group of wonderful eclectic professional musicians! Should be a fun way to round out my staycation!

WOW, how could anyone say that Anger Is A Gift is even close to the real thing, and I LOVE Rage. The critique you gave Old School was much better than the one given to Anger Is a Gift. You had almost nothing bad to say about Old School. Anger Is a Gift on the otherhand had a lot of short-comings. Their segue’s were nonexistent and their display of an American flag and a Che Guevara flag was a sad attempt to immitate the political passion of the real band. They are a cheap imitation in that all they can do is sound sort of like the real band. If this is all they have to offer, why are they moving on? Rage Against The Machine should feel insulted and violated, I know I do.
The judges that rate them better than old school need to go back to judge school. Also, if you all you have to say about a band is how much you love them and want to work with them, then it should of have shown in your scoring. You just dumped the band you love for the ugly girl.
July 28, 2008 at 8:09 pm
I have to agree I thought Anger is a Gift and Old School was going to the finals. They were in my ears the best bands. What I heard, Detroit Underground were off and not as good but what they did have was a big group of friends who came to scream into the meter where Old School friends live far away to show up and scream. They’re not that kind of people.
My biggest problem was the sound broad. Can’t they hear what is going on on the stage? The vocals were good, the drum sound was equal to the bass but the guitars especially the lead guitar, I couldn’t hear their guitar riffs/ solos. I’m not in a band but when ever a guitar player is going off aren’t they suppose to have a higher sound level so everyone can hear them going crazy on their guitar? I hope the next show has a better sound check so everyone can appreciate their hard work.
Good Luck to all the group in the finals, relax, have fun and bring your “A Game”. This is it the big bucks for the big times.

Hey Ed!
I got to thinkin’…
Do these two statements (by you) conflict?
“Isn’t it annoying when bands misspell their names for no other reason than because they think it’s cool?”
“Hey guys, why not use the heavy metal umlaut in your name?”
Just wonderin’
July 28, 2008 at 8:16 pm
You know I love you?
July 28, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Hey Ed!
JK!
Isn’t this a scary statement from Dickie…
“I got to thinkin’…”
Just wonderin’
Peace!!
July 28, 2008 at 8:45 pm

I just want to say what a freakin’ blast we had last night! Congrats to DU and AIAG! Not only were all the bands great, they were a great bunch of guys! (and gal)
Thanks again for letting us back up that stage! Cory and his crew are fantastic! The lights were incredible! Hats off!
Good luck to the finalists!
July 28, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Dickie, I have no idea who does or doesn’t love me anymore. I don’t trust none’yall.
ha – just kidding homey, big love for you.
and, to answer your question, it’s possible that it might be a conflict if wasn’t kidding about Monster’s of Rock using the heavy metal umlaut.
Linda, I don’t have any problem sharing my picks:
First place – Tenacious Double D’s
Second Place – Jump Start
Third Place – Haute Flash
Last – Collen the Blogger and the BungleBunnies
July 28, 2008 at 9:57 pm
amen alicia, amen.
July 28, 2008 at 11:10 pm
“You just dumped the band you love for the ugly girl.”
What does that even mean??
July 28, 2008 at 11:14 pm
It makes no sense on several levels.
July 28, 2008 at 11:15 pm
Alicia,
You owe Old School some $$$
July 28, 2008 at 11:29 pm
Hey, that guy named Michael who wrote negitve stuff on the other blog from last week who never answered everyones question and asked ” is this all San Diego has to offer” are you the same Michael writing on this blog now? Cause all of us still would like to know what you meant by your comments from the other blog dude!!!!
July 28, 2008 at 11:42 pm
yeah man, fess up!
July 29, 2008 at 3:08 am
“BungleBunnies”? I’ll have you know I have never or would ever be associated with ANYTHING with the word “bunnies” in it!! EEEWWWW!!
Michael you stated, “…Old School friends live far away to show up and scream. They’re not that kind of people…” By that are we to assume you are an Old School fan? Too bad for Old School. Dude… they don’t need your negativity! Old School is a top notch group and will go very far as long as you don’t bring negativity upon them. Old School….. be careful with whom you associate.
Monster Drummer (not MOR drummer), I’d like to know what Michael meant by that statement too. San Diego has offered quite a lot!
Let’s hear it for all the female rockers out there. We are WOMEN!! The mothers of ALL rockers!!
July 29, 2008 at 7:47 am
colleen,
Since you’re all girl power all the time, if we put our singer Ron in a skirt and call him Rhonda will you root for MOR at the final?
July 29, 2008 at 8:19 am
Now that would be something to see!! NOT!
July 29, 2008 at 8:52 am
Boy, compared to last weeks blog use, this week is mello! I guess everyone is working hard to be ready to kick some booty on Sunday! Can’t wait to see who takes the gold!!! I guess that Michael guy is afraid to tell us all what he meant by that crack about San Diego talent!
July 29, 2008 at 8:59 am
Like I said earlier, it was a “sniper shot and run” kind of comment.
July 29, 2008 at 9:12 am
Yea Monster drummer….the exciting part is that anything can happen. It won’t be a boring evening that’s for sure.
July 29, 2008 at 9:19 am
I think the 6ONE9iners bailed. Maybe they finally got over it.
So it’s just us die harders.
July 29, 2008 at 9:22 am
Does anyone know what the seating will be like on Sunday? Last year there weren’t any chairs….presumably to make more space.
July 29, 2008 at 10:00 am
Alice and the Angry Underground Mönsters
July 29, 2008 at 10:30 am
we’re going to leave the cocktail seating this year. maybe pull the seats from the bar and from the tables nect top the bar. but that’s it.
July 29, 2008 at 10:30 am
Dickie — I like the name of that newest contestant! That way we all win!
Tom — Putting Ron(da) in a skirt…. now THAT would be a Monster to cheer (loudly) for!!
July 29, 2008 at 10:35 am
Jason — thank you. Also thanks for easing up on the fog machine the last two weeks. The effect has been much better! We can actually see the bands! I’m glad you too have listened and learned!
See? Less is SOMETIMES better.
July 29, 2008 at 10:37 am
Yeah, I like that neam too! Works em all in there!! Alice and the Angry Underground Mnosters. . . too funny!
July 29, 2008 at 10:38 am

God, I biff’d everything I typed, didn’t I!!! I love your typing too man!!! Ha! It’s proof my teachers were right. . . . proof read stuff first!!!
July 29, 2008 at 10:59 am
Wow , it is calm here. I was expecting a rash of sh&t slinging tp be going on.
First…Big Congrats to AIAG !! Bring it on next week and show them everything you have !!
The second choice really shocked me ! Even though I had already , b4 the show chosen AIAG and Detroit Underground for the Finals, not only for talent, but for diversity in the Finals. (not that it works that way, no no i’m not implying that !” But after I actually heard that bands, I too, really expected Old School to join AIAG in the finals. Either way , it is going to be phenomenal show next Sunday.
Good luck to everyone !
July 29, 2008 at 11:17 am
Old school and Anger is a gift would have been more exciting than the Philharmonic Detroit Underwear Transit Authority band. They are nice and all but……………………….Boring! If I want to see a act like them I would just go to a nifty 50’s or sexy 60’s bar and grill joint in the OC for cocktails and sliders but…………..I’m young. What do I know? Viagra is the only thing that could get me stiff for that lounge lizard act. Sorry to sound mean.
July 29, 2008 at 11:25 am
Man… I’m so bummed I miss Old School at the semi’s… but I’m definitely going to go and check out one of their gigs. And THAT is what this is all about, getting the great bands heard!
Ed, did you miss me?
July 29, 2008 at 11:25 am
Monsters of Rock ALL THE WAY!
July 29, 2008 at 11:47 am
Just some advice for Monsters of Rock. Do yourselves a favor and have everyone in the band wear something cool. Blue jeans and a t-shirt you bought at the last Megadeath concert makes you guys look like a typical garage band. You guys are better than that!
July 29, 2008 at 11:52 am
I feel the earth move under my feet…
July 29, 2008 at 11:59 am

July 29, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Does she even like men at all? Why can’t men and women rock and roll together? Why does it always have to turn into a battle of the sex?
July 29, 2008 at 2:22 pm
By the way. . . I’m just kidding ya!!!
July 29, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Battle of the sexes is all Ed’s fault
July 29, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Hey!
For next year… how about small token awards for different categories (excluding the finalists) like best female band, best tribute, etc. Decide on the number of “extra” awards, five for example, then make up the actual winning categories after round one.
You could invite the winners to the finals event and present these between acts. This would grow your audience to include fans of those acts. If you were doing the video thing you could play back parts of their performance prior to giving the award.
July 29, 2008 at 2:44 pm
You guys should hire me.
July 29, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Great idea Dave! I like that a lot.
July 29, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Um…
the first post or the second one?
July 29, 2008 at 2:56 pm

July 29, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Ed my love, you DO know that was Whitney Houston, right? (Well… Dolly Parton first, if you wanna’ get technical).
July 29, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Thus illustrating the point, eh?
July 29, 2008 at 3:56 pm
I love that. . . . .we drop the beat!! Ha! Now that cracks me up!!! Your all too funny!! Like family or something!
July 29, 2008 at 4:06 pm

“He’ll kick you apart, oooh”
July 29, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Now that was good dude!!!! I saw the video!!!
July 29, 2008 at 4:58 pm
I think Dave’s got something there – awards for wierdest costumes, loudest audience dB readings (and/or loudest performance!), overcoming most technical challenges onstage… oh, and I especially liked the suggestion about best female band… gee, I thiink there was ONLY ONE wasn’t there?
As I recall, they totally f’n ROCKED! The video clips would be way cool, esp for those who maybe didn’t make it to all the shows to see what they missed.
July 29, 2008 at 5:26 pm
UMC Observer – something cool? I’m not sure what your version of cool is. Clothing sponsors are welcome to contact us.
Putt O’Reilly – If you’re going to mess with our name get it right. It’s Monstrous C*&k. And Johnny’s joke went clear over your head. I suspect you are the same character who comes in, drops a few insults and changes his screen name to avoid confrontation.
July 29, 2008 at 5:31 pm
I’m not a feminist… I am a woman. I don’t put men down just because they are men, because I happen to love men (well, mostly). Ed has been having a friendly joke-fest with the women on this board, but in a cool and playful way. The Putt guy is just mean. I would imagine he is bitter toward women because he can’t find one who will hang with him. Who knows? I certainly don’t care. Just stop being a jerk, unless of course you intend to have only men on here… and how BORING would that be?
BTW, I’m not fat. But I do like peppermint
July 29, 2008 at 5:33 pm
Oh, and I’m not sure I’m a fan of all the extra awards. Kinda seems weird, but I’m open minded and maybe, if done correctly it could be cool.
But I DO think you should show a montage of clips from each of the previous weeks while we are all anxiously awaiting the finals.
And Ed, I’m glad you missed me too
July 29, 2008 at 5:34 pm
Patti’s hot!
(love ya girl)
July 29, 2008 at 5:36 pm
Hey Putt,
Do you have a gift receipt for all of that anger?
I thought I might just get a refund.
July 29, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Hey, thanks Jona… you’re hot too!
July 29, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Tom you might be right about who the Putts is! No gutts. . . just a Putts!!
July 29, 2008 at 6:50 pm
If you win, (Monster Hummer), Ill tell you who i am.
If you dont win, then you and Tom can give each other back and front rubs for all eternity and live happily ever after.
Peppermint, I get more ass then a toilet seat! Nice theory but your mother was wrong.
Anyone else got a cute comment?
Oh, and peace and love!
July 29, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Alicia, yeah, oops, I actually did know that. My original intention was to use a Celine Dion song, but couldn’t think of any titles off hand, so moved to the annoying Whitney (Dolly) tune. Then I forgot to change the Celine part. Oh well. Could be worse. I could be Putt O’Reilly. That would suck.
July 29, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Putt… you are rude and vulgar. Usually people like you are mean and loud to cover up their lack of intelligence. It isn’t working…
July 29, 2008 at 7:11 pm
I think he’s just trying to be Puck, that obnoxious guy from the 3rd (I think) season of the Real World. At least Puck was interesting.
July 29, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Putt…. and peace and love to you too. I hope you find it some day.
PEACE….
July 29, 2008 at 7:40 pm
I’m sorry, but I couldn’t help but think that when someone says he…
“get more ass than a toilet seat”
… that it sure sounds like he’s calling himself a sh*tface.
I mean, gross! Who wants that kind of ass?
July 29, 2008 at 7:49 pm
July 29, 2008 at 8:11 pm
I need to straighten up here at home…
but first! How does a lead singer change a light bulb?
she just holds it and the world revolves around her.
July 29, 2008 at 8:12 pm
alright, alright
one more musician joke…
July 29, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Some settlers are heading out west in their wagons. Through the Indian Territory. As Night falls they circle the wagons to settle in. Two cowboys are on watch when off in the distance they hear drums!
dun dun dun dun <—- drums
One cowboy says, “I don’t like the sound of them drums!”
Off in the wilderness you hear a lone voice, “Hey! Our regular drummer is sick, OK?”
July 29, 2008 at 8:46 pm
I love the drummer joke Dickie!! To the puss man Putts. . . . Grow up and go some where else to play!!
July 29, 2008 at 9:11 pm
And the cowboy says… I don’t like the sound of them drums…
Really I hate the drums…
Will Somebody PLEASE STop the fu**** drums.
The Indian says, “NO. Drum Stop. Bass solo start”.
July 29, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Are you asking me to shut up cause of my name. . . Monster Drummer? Cause I always shut up when someone tells me to shut up. . . I never keep talking or anything like that. . . .I just get real quite and try not to make a sound. . . . when I’m told to shut up, that’s just what I do, I shut up and go away and stay out of it. . . . I hate to keep talking when told to shut up cause I might make others mad. . . . I just back off and shut up and blend in. . . . You’ll never have to tell me twice to shut up cause I get it, I understand english and know what shut up means, it means shut up!. . . . . . . . .
Now your supposed to say to me “Shut up Shutin up”!
July 29, 2008 at 10:09 pm
It’s ok Putz, I don’t want to know you.
July 29, 2008 at 10:19 pm
hey monster,
check it out,
No you’re supposed to say, etc. etc
stop saying your when you should say you’re.
July 29, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Perhaps if MOR had more of a pro look to them perhaps they would not have to settle for playing Janies (dive bar) for $ 50 per man! Where you play reflects what level band you really are!
Go ahead and where shorts and a T-shirt and stand in one spot. See where it gets you…So what if your band is tight and lead vocals are right on! If your not the total package then you won’t go anywhere but Janies. FYI – Fannies is in need of a good bar band too.
Anger is a gift – Blah,Blah,Blah If the judges were not die hard RAGE fans you guys would have never beat Old School. Anger is a TURD and needs to be flushed in the finals!!!
July 29, 2008 at 10:51 pm
I just want to give a shout out to Eric Petterson, the drummer for Rockslide, also known as UMC Observer, since he can’t use the name UMC Finalist. It’s too bad that among all the great talented, classy, people we’ve met throughout this experience there has to be one sore loser who can’t move on. Get over it Eric.
July 29, 2008 at 11:06 pm
UMC Observer… what an ass. Really man. Janies may not be big, but she is an awesome person and I give her credit for running a great bar (in a mans world and all). Lots of really great bands play there on occasion and Monsters is one of them.
And besides, the MONSTERS don’t have to debate their quality with you… you hide behind fake names like a coward. They are goning to WIN this contest!!! (and unlike you they have made their way to the finals).
BTW, MONSTERS also plays Canes often, and Second Wind and many other clubs and their fans follow wherever they go. Maybe if you had a fan you wouldn’t need to be such a jerk. Go suck your sour grapes someplace where people will listen to your bitter, ugly line…
This board is getting to be a lot less fun. Instead of bouncing new ideas and constructive critisism in a fun way, it has become a place of haters and wanta bees.
ED – where the heck are you?
July 29, 2008 at 11:15 pm
Eric(UMC Observer), sorry I misspelled your last name, it’s Peterson, not Petterson. I wouldn’t want to dissrespect you.
Patty, you ROCK! Thanks for the kind words.
July 29, 2008 at 11:22 pm
Hey Tim, thanks for the english lesson! Sorry I’m not as perfect as you seem to be. Like a lot of folks here, I was just having some fun! Not trying to hurt anyone. Thanks.
Patti I think your right about that UMC Observer catfish, I’ll bet it’s Michael/Putt person taking pot shots at everyone again! What’s his trip?
July 30, 2008 at 2:20 am
Hello night owls! Once again on behalf of Anger is a gift…
I would just like to send a big fatty thanks to all of our family and friends, new friends, and up most respect to all our new secret friends hidden in the shadows who came up and introduced themselves as new fans, but had to keep it low key because of their affiliation with the rival band. We love you guys!
Judges… what can I say? We greatly appreciate all the kind words, wisdom, and humor:) you have already left a huge impact on us which has made us stronger as a team. Thank you much! We are now your fans!
The Monster Massive MOR is a force to be reckoned with (sorry I got pulled away, we’ll talk on Sun. I’m sure) the Almighty D.U. is very stiff competition and very cool dudes and girl (spectacular sax solo). Didn’t meet any of the Alice Gang but been waiting to catch your set from even the first one! Good to meet all of you, I’ll be cheering you on, maybe even get to tear up some rug on the dance floor! haha…gotta find me a girl first? hhhmmm?
May the best man win guys… may the best band win!!! We’ll see you…
JM
July 30, 2008 at 2:45 am
Johnny M. — Greetings to a fellow night owl! Yes, this year has been a good one. Even though I haven’t always agreed with the judges, it’s been interesting to listen to their reasoning as to why they judged the bands the way they did. They all have interesting perspectives on what they saw in each performance.
Your kind words and support of your fellow contestants shows that AIAG is not as “angry” as the name suggests.
Yes… may the best man (or woman… remember… DU has the only woman still left in the contest) win. As far as I’m concerned, we have four winners already. Good luck to all!!!
July 30, 2008 at 2:50 am
Oh… one more thing before I get off this mug?
Hey! UMC Observer
We’re the TURD your momma warned you about buddy, you know the one that comes out with such raw force it leaves your devils onion ring burning, and even more when you try to wipe it away? Yeah you know? The TURD you get after eating a L.A. bacon wrapped dog on your way out of the club at 2:00am. mmmm…. so..so…good! You know it’s gonna hurt, but you wont turn it down because it’s damn fantastic! We are the TURD that will not flush because of length, strength and girth, we just spin but will not break! Yeah!
Have a great one buddy, hope you step in dog shit soon! Sorry everyone… I am from the Angry band you know? laters…
JM
July 30, 2008 at 3:20 am
Yeah , and what happend to that kick ass dj who played before and inbetween every band. He rocked it.
BBDJM
Bring back d j mac lol
Finals will be fun
July 30, 2008 at 3:27 am
Hey there Colleen? You are right, D.U. has the only girl left. That is why I changed it from best man to best band! ssshhhwww…. Close one…
If you glance back at our first blogs, you can clearly see me or my mates are nothing near Angry, although very much irritated at times watching you bloggers bang each other and the judges up, not to mention the very “kind” words to congrat us on our first win, and probably the reason Viejas took the contracts away cause of the big fuss of casino friendliness. We remember… those people possibly could have ruined a good thing for someone to add to their resume!
It’s good to see the more positive changes in everyones tones over the weeks, but I just really don’t care much for negativity in any form especially when my team is in training for a big fight. But I gotta say this one last thing… Because of everyones nonsense we are stronger and have learned plenty, it’s all about turning – to + for this we thank all of you!
nite Ms.Collen

July 30, 2008 at 8:31 am
UMC Observer, I’m not sure what I said to offend you other than question what your definition of “cool” is. It was a pretty vague comment to make. Like I said before, I’m always open to constructive criticism, but “something cool” means different things to different people and who knows what that means to you.
If your band only got $50 at Janie’s then that’s your problem. We are not beyond playing small clubs nor is it all we do. We must be doing something right to be in the position we are in. We focus more on musicianship than fashion and if we were after corporate gigs we wouldn’t be playing Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath. It has nothing to do with the clothes we wear.
I could certainly offer up plenty of advice for your band, but I’m a competitor in this competition, not a judge. I prefer to support my fellow musicians rather than talk smack about them on the blog.
July 30, 2008 at 8:40 am
By the way http://www.megadeth.com/
What are they wearing? It looks like black t-shirts and jeans. Hmmm. If we look like we just got back from a Megadeth concert it’s ok with me. It fits what we do.
July 30, 2008 at 8:40 am
Sergio, you KNOW I adore you guys… Star, Alta and I have been on board the MOR train forever (and always will be). It is so much fun for those of us who love not only the great talent you all have, but you as men of honor, to see you bring it to the FINALS!
We are mobilizing the troops for Sunday, I am just so excited for you all!
July 30, 2008 at 8:43 am
Johnny M, so your Anger is an act (instead of a gift)?
Looking forward to seeing you all since you have apparently brought a whole new twist the the Battle of the Cover Bands this year.
July 30, 2008 at 8:45 am
BTW, I loved DJ Mac… yeah, bring him back
July 30, 2008 at 9:48 am
Hey JM, Thanks for the compliment on the sax solo. Nice to know someone was listening and liked it. It’s also good to hear your genuine positive attitude on this blog…..a sure sign of a class act.
July 30, 2008 at 10:12 am
There are lots of Michaels in this world and I don’t know who the other Michael is that need to fess up or about what to fess up to.
Did someone misread my blog there wasn’t anything negative about Old School in there I felt they got a raw deal because they didn’t have their groupies to cheer them on like DU did. I thought OS was much better and should be in the hunt. What I meant by “They’re not that kind of people.” is they don’t need to bring everyone they know to scream, their music and performance value speaks for itself and don’t need a bunch of groupies to get them through at least it shouldn’t be that way. A cheer factor shouldn’t decide if they win or not. 2 strong votes for with 1 vote against and the cheer meter threw them out sucks. Is that how Bush got in there? His cronies screamed louder? Think about it.
And Old School had a mishap with some strings and pulled out of it to finish strong should say something about the group as a very professional group. I don’t know Alica, rethink your decision or are you a DU groupie too?
Oh by the way I don’t know OS, it was the 1st time I heard them and I thought they were great 1st class performers.
The only negativity is toward the sound broad people not letting the listeners truly enjoy what the performers have to offer in their solo work and I hope they are reading this and realize we as an audience what to hear it all not what they want us to hear.
I hope this sets the blog straight and clears my Michael name.
July 30, 2008 at 10:40 am
Just want to leave a qiuck message to all the people who supproted Alice and the Cooper Gang. You all have been great and we feel very fortunate to be in the finals. Looking very much forward to sunday. We Have a few huge suprises in our set this time around. I wish all the bands the best of luck.
Alice….
Alice and the Cooper Gang
July 30, 2008 at 11:08 am
I’ll just call myself Michael “1″ from now on so all you will know the difference from me and the other Michael. Wow this Michael guy really got you guys going, very sensitive group here. I didn’t read what he said but man a tough group. And you put me in with Putts i’m stunned he is super negative and I just mentioned the groupies made the decision of who wins and OS don’t need there groupies they aren’t that kind of people to make a win for them and you all go off on me, wow very sensitive group here.
I think I’ll keep my comments to myself seems you don’t want to hear anything what anyone else has to say except your own opinions. That’s a shame. I guess I’m not welcome in your group. Sorry I’ll bug out now. I’ll just shut up and go away.
I’ll be the part of America that sees so many things wrong with the world and won’t say anything about it in fear of making someone mad or offended by my opinion. This is what created a 2nd term for Bush. But this is your blog.
Bye
Hey there is a life outside this blog but if it fits you have fun with it.
July 30, 2008 at 11:08 am
Michael, actually, you have it back-asswards. If you are going to compare the Old School defeat to the Florida election debacle, get it right please. The way Bush got into office is that the POPULAR VOTE was ignored and the Supreme Court (as in, um, judges) voted to put Bush in office.
What happened to Old School was exactly the opposite. The popular vote (the audience) was counted, and the judges picks were nulled.
Furthermore, you complaint that Old School (whom I love) shouldn’t have lost because their people didn’t yell loud enough is getting soooo old.
I have NEVER seen a battle of the bands where audience response isn’t counted. Why not? Because it makes sense on so many levels.
1. Let’s the people in the audience be part of the judging, which excites and invigorates the crowd.
2. Helps make up for the fact that their are only 3 judges, who are just three people with opinions, nothing more
3. Inspires the bands to promote the show, to get their fans to come and cheer and shout which, not only increases the venue’s bottom line, but just makes the show that much more fun overall.
Sure, the crowd noise category puts some bands at a disadvantage, like Help, and Old School, whose fans live farther away than other band’s fans. But that’s just the way it is. There is no such thing, in contests like these, as total equality. Just like life.
So please, stop whining.
Lastly, your complaints about the sound crew reveal how little you know about sound and live performances because these guys are doing a great job and everybody knows it… except you.
July 30, 2008 at 11:09 am
Patti – here I am!
July 30, 2008 at 11:28 am
I am not the UMC Observer. Good luck to all the bands this Sunday!
July 30, 2008 at 11:30 am
The sound crew are only as good as the band will let them be. If a band is so loud that the sound crew can’t put the instruments through the PA, the band loses. If the band is professional, and has control of themselves, the sound crew will have some head room to actually mix the band. HF learned this rule early in the competition. We kept our stage volume down so the crew could mix, and we could hear the monitors. It’s a simple, no brainer, move. As far as trusting the sound crew? What does Viejas or it’s employees have to gain by ruining the sound in their room?
July 30, 2008 at 11:41 am
Michael, You really haven’t been reading much of this blog if you think we’re overly sensitive here. Some of the vitriol that has been volleyed about makes anything you wrote look like chicken salad.
No, it seems to me that you’re the one who is sensitive because you’re threatening to take your ball and go home. And my my my you are certainly able to dish it out, but not quite as good at taking it.
Bottom line, you came in and made some comments that people didn’t agree with, and then they (and I) told you why we disagreed. (such as your analogy to the Florida election, or your insulting of the sound crew). We welcome your comments brother, keep ‘em coming, but don’t get all sissy on me when somebody returns volley.
As for confusing you with the other Michael, sorry about that.
July 30, 2008 at 12:07 pm
Hey everyone! Haven’t been on here for awhile. Unfortunately, I haven’t been to any of the Sunday nights yet but I am going to try to atleast make it out to the last one. It looks like I have missed out on seeing that “Old School” band though. Hopefully they will be playing at Viejas so we can check them out. Although I have not seen them, it does kinda suck that a band doesn’t get to go through because of lack of audience participation. Only reason I’m saying that is because look at these TV shows like American Idol and Americas Got Talent and the way that the audience reacts with Simon-they can’t stand him. I personally agree with him 99% of the time, but anyways. I’m just saying. Many times the audience goes crazy over some pretty bad stuff, right? Not to say that any of the bands are bad, but, I know that I often don’t agree with the audience reaction. So anyways, just a thought. But then again, Ed, I guess you are right when you say that it gives the audience a chance to be heard too. It’s a tough call. I know you’re trying to make everyone happy and you have to draw the line somewhere. I wonder, were there any bands that you judges saw in this competition that you feel are on their way up in the scene? I mean, any raw talent/”diamonds in the rough” as they say? I’m just curious because I would be interested in checking out those acts. By the way, I personally like your poem or song on the other page, very creative. But then again, I’m a horror flick, ghost stories undercover goth kinda girl-HAHA! And about Putt, I think he’s actually pretty funny. If you’ve ever blogged, you would know there are MUCH worse out there then him. Take care everyone! I Hope to make it out! Hello to Jason and all the sound engineers!!
July 30, 2008 at 12:58 pm
I feel better now Ed…
Everyone is allowed an opinion. I personally am drawn to people who have strong opinions and are not afraid to voice them. Although, nothing is uglier than mean bullies with their over-inflated egos and vulgar language. I have found in life that the bullies of the world are actually big babies who, when challenged on their own playground, run fleeing, screaming “foul play”. So it is with Michael.
In regard to a band not moving forward, Old School isn’t the only “better band” that did not move forward due to the interpreted crowd response. It happens. Like Ed said, life isn’t fair, it is what it is so deal with it.
Only 4 more days until the MONSTERS OF ROCK rule the world! I can hardly wait
July 30, 2008 at 1:03 pm
actually, in the Florida thing. The judges just told gore to stop f**king with the ballots.
It wouldn’t have been as close if the network tv people hadn’t called it for gore before the polls closed.
July 30, 2008 at 1:15 pm
I have a question about Michael, as he said he hadn’t read much of the blogs here yet he sure did seem to know about the so called “Other” Michael! That Michael hasn’t written a thing since the last week’s blog page! He knew plenty about those blogs and nothing about all the other stuff everyone has written. I think he is the first Michael and was trying to take heat off himself. If each user name here is set by a person’s personal email address, then maybe he ran out of addresses or didn’t want to go to Yahoo.com and create another for a new name to use to stir the pot of hate again!
July 30, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Tim, when you say the the judges told Gore to stop “f%$#king with” the ballots,” by “f%$#ing with” do you mean, counting them? Because that’s what they were doing, recounting the ballots to make sure that all the votes got tallied correctly – which in my mind, hardly constitutes “f%$#ing with” them.
July 30, 2008 at 1:33 pm
I’m just letting you know, not expressing an opinion.
I don’t want to turn this fine blog into a political discussion, I was mearly pointing out that the court didn’t decide who won the election in Florida. They just stopped the excessive recounting. The winner was determined by who got the most votes.
July 30, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Ed; Thank you , you big, strong, hansom, hunk of a really smart guy. (and I’m NOT in the contest anymore, so I am not smacking up).
ALL THE VOTES, ALL THE TIME, NEED TO BE TALLIED CORRECTLY!!!!!
July 30, 2008 at 1:42 pm
I was just looking at the lineup for Sunday.
One observation… Alice and MOR have weaker drummers.
Strong drummers who got knocked out?
Old School
6ONE9
Mercy House
Red Muffs
July 30, 2008 at 1:45 pm
All the votes were counted in Florida. I think it was three times. That was before gore’s people got involved.
After they started their own recounts they excluded all of the state except three counties. In addition they attempted to void the military absentee votes.
So much for ALL THE VOTES, ALL THE TIME.
July 30, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Dude, that’s not a very nice thing to say to those guys!!!
July 30, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Not weak but weaker than Anger and DU.
I would love to see them Smash the snare a bit harder.
btw, I’m not a drummer.
July 30, 2008 at 1:55 pm
I got ya, you want them to play louder with force and passion as a drummer should, you’re right there! I am a drummer and I love to kill em! It’s good for the soul! HA! Like that drummer who was on the Rockstar series, you know, Rock Star INXS and SUPERNOVA, the house band drummer, he said he thought he had the best job in the world cause he got paid to hit things!!!
July 30, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Dickie is obviously nuts. Just because Tom didn’t
“smash the snare a bit harder” doesn’t make him a weaker drummer. The Whole MONSTERS OF ROCK band is tight, and that is in great part the rhythm section (ie bass and drums).
Jeez, I guess the whole world does revolve around Dickie. He must be a lead singer. jkjk
July 30, 2008 at 2:01 pm
no comment!!
July 30, 2008 at 2:06 pm
I enjoyed MOR immensely. I neglected to include them in my picks but now that I’ve seen them I believe they will take third place.
July 30, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Yea Dickie….its not nice to say bad things about drummers (I’m going to be one when I grow up). It would be especially NOT nice to say something like….”So many drummers, So little time”. Steer clear of that one or you’ll get sticks thrown at you.
July 30, 2008 at 2:15 pm
Trying not to be mean, but let’s get serious about each band’s chances.
July 30, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Detroit Underground first.
Strong rythmn section. Good guitar player but doesn’t bring up the volume enough for the solos. I’d like to see him come out front when he solos too. (way you show him how Johnny!)
The vocals sounded off on the Santana song. Not pitch but maybe the blend? IDK
Keys were awsome! Hey B Battle! The trumpet was cool too with the high notes.
July 30, 2008 at 2:19 pm
So Dickie, if MOR is your third place pick, who do you have for 1st and 2nd place??? I’m just asking is all!
July 30, 2008 at 2:30 pm
AIAG and DU
July 30, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Anger is a Gift
All good except…
Too much didling between songs. Maybe you could have more intruments on stand by for the special tuning situations?
Getting the crowd on the mic was cool.
July 30, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Monsters of Rock
Great, love your singer. Get the green les paul louder on the leads. Do something with your zombie next time instead of just displaying him.
July 30, 2008 at 2:35 pm
Alice
Weakest on music but strongest on the show. Be in tune for the finals. Maybe put some fake arms on Mark then cut them off during the show! Where’s the chicks I see on your website? bring them in too.
July 30, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Well Dickie my good man. Alice and the Cooper Gang plans on coming in first place and throwing a big monkey wench into your picks
July 30, 2008 at 2:40 pm
good! make me wrong! I would love to see that…
I’ll be there btw.
July 30, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Nice to hear from Alice after all this time! He and the rest of us boys have been working it out like Stallone in Rocky III, quietly punching away on the sides of beef in the dank practice garage. Whatever happens on Sunday, there will be some great performances! I don’t envy the judges one bit for their tough job. We appreciate the great job Jason and the crew have done throughout the contest and no matter the outcome, we have benefitted enormously from the advice of the judges (and bloggers). But you better believe we’re coming out swinging!
July 30, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Do you mean “chicks” as in baby chickens, or young women?
I hope Viejas won’t allow any chicks to have their heads bitten off. But if it happens, I will personally call the animal abuse hotline.
July 30, 2008 at 2:44 pm
um…
Those are “code” words us hard rockin’ guys use.
Sorry Shaaron, you wouldn’t understand.
ha ha jk
July 30, 2008 at 2:55 pm
I don’t mind being underestimated, especially by someone who equates hitting hard with talent.
July 30, 2008 at 2:57 pm
I don’t think Monster Drummer underestimates you…
July 30, 2008 at 3:00 pm
There will be snake sushi for all after the show! Yum!
July 30, 2008 at 3:05 pm
In fact Tender Tom, I thought you were the best drummer there that night. So next time don’t be so sensitive cause I play drums myself and know one can do both, hit hard, play with taste and be talented! You did great that night but so sensitive!! HA!

Hey Will, I’ll have a bite of that!!! Hey Alice, Rock on man, I know you guys can do it!!!
July 30, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Love ya back, Monster D!
July 30, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Hey I loved the idea of putting fake arms on Mark and pulling them off! I wonder if the club would get upset if blood sprayed all over when you did! Now that would be classic Alice Cooper!!!
July 30, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Happy Birthday Edwin..I have to say it feels good to be the underdog. just for the record.. 619 and all there fans/Second wind people are good friends of ours as well We love you guys. Hope to see you all there at the show.
July 30, 2008 at 3:29 pm
Bring a mop, cuz it’s going to be like Gallagher in Hell!
July 30, 2008 at 3:36 pm
You mean Alice isn’t gonna drink the blood?? Just kidding folks!
July 30, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Nope, M.D. You’re thinking of his illigitimate children like KISS, Ozzy, Slipknot, etc. Alice was the first and is still the best!
July 30, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Eeeuuuuwww…. no blood please. That was always disturbing and really not very entertaining. I guess if you like Alice it’s part of the show. But whatever theatrics you pull, PLEASE don’t kill your pet snake man… that is just wrong.
July 30, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Alice never kills the snake. . . . . . he kills himself!! He either cuts his head off with a guillotine! Or he eletrocutes himself or gets hanged! I’ve never seen him hurt the snake! Your thinking of Ozzie who bit the head off a bat!
July 30, 2008 at 4:49 pm
What was the name of that bat?
July 30, 2008 at 5:52 pm
I don’t know but his on stage music carreer did not get him ahead!!! He was sure not the head bat in his cave!! I’ll bet he thought Ozzie was going to give him a head start in the music bizz!!!! ha!
July 30, 2008 at 5:59 pm
I’m sorry I thought I heard someone talking about Alice say there would be “snake sushi” after the show. I’m just sayin…YIKES!
July 30, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Tim, You are correct about the Supreme court, which makes me wrong.
I hate being wrong.
Therefore, I hate you.
July 30, 2008 at 9:17 pm
I remember one time when I saw Alice, he pulled a fan out of the crowd and onto the stage, and sang Only Women Bleed to her and then, near the climax of the song, impaled her with the microphone stand, blood splattering all over the place. One of the coolest things i ever saw. Later, in the same show, he took these giant blocks that were scattered around the stage and placed them on top of each other one at time, building upward, with a ladder. When the last block was placed on top, the column (or should I say golem) came to life, a giant, 20 foot monster stomping around the stage chasing after Alice.
Talk about showmanship.
July 30, 2008 at 9:50 pm
My first concert was Pablo Cruise and they… um, nevermind.
Next was Tower of Power! Not much of a “show”. They didn’t wear their gold clothes. Probably because they did the “big” show in Honolulu and I saw them in Lahaina. you know, laid back. They were fantastic! Talk about a “real” horn section.
:::I love quote marks:::
July 30, 2008 at 9:53 pm
I have been reading all the post from the first week to now and its time to have the best bands be decided by the fans is what it looks like and sounds like what I have been reading so every band better bring you’re “A” game and you’re “A” fans because that is what it will take to make the difference.
I have my own opinion about whom I think is going to win and who should have not been eliminated but I have heard some great music. I have a few new bands that I will be fallowing and helping to get where they need to be.
Thank You Viejas for having this event and making music the center of it. Hey guys there are going to be 3 bands with some big CHECKS on Sunday night and there is going to be one hell of an after PARTY.
Let the fun begain
July 30, 2008 at 9:58 pm
The best “show” was the Tubes!
The first time I saw them was right here at SDSU. Utopia opened and I became a Todd fan.
The Tubes had the coolest show. Fee Waybill is a crack up! They had dancers, and props. Fee became “Mr. Hate” and took one dancer as a hostage. No Quay that night.
The second time sucked.
The Love Bomb tour. They were ready to split up and it showed.
July 30, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Todd Rundgren is my hero. Saw him many times at the Bacchanal when I bartended there in the 80s and 90s. Also saw Utopia in a club in Poughkeepsie New York called The Chance. Show was awesome. I’ll never forget it.
Also saw the Tubes a few times at the Bacchanal, but it was after their heyday and not quite as good as their reputation as the greatest showmen on earth, and what the hell is a “heyday” anyway.
My first concert was (I know some will laugh at this) the rock band Kansas at Madison Square Garden. I actually saw Beatlemania at the Winter Garden Theater in NY before that, but I don’t think that counts as a rock concert because Beatlemania was more of a theatrical performance. Unbelievable and rocking though it was.
In fact, it was Beatlemania that started the whole Tribute Band Movement. I was thinking of that when Help was playing. So, I guess we’ve come full circle, no?
July 30, 2008 at 10:24 pm
I think Anger is a Gift should change their name to Rage Against Mr. Clean.
July 30, 2008 at 11:04 pm
I don’t know how y’all found out it was my birthday on the 3rd, but I thank you for your happy birthday wishes. We’re gonna be partying that night after the show – even got ourselves a hotel room.
anyone gonna stick around?

Did you really think I was going to go away? Silly people. My opinion is my opinion I hope everyone has one and can state it clear and loud if they want or quietly. Edwin you’re right I haven’t read much of this blog I have lots of other things to do. But after last week show which is the 1st one I was at and really enjoyed it so I had my opinions I want to state and because of my name I was put in a category and attacked in a negative way. Which didn’t bother me just wanted to clear my name so I could be recognize for who I am someone with an opinion.
And I still feel the sound broad needs to let the guitar player be heard. The people I was at the show with has been there the whole time from the 1st show and they agree with me. They do play in groups and when the lead guitar starts going off and we couldn’t hear them without saying a word about any of this we look at each other and shake our heads and we talked about it later stating the sound should be turned up so the guitar can be heard like any CD we listen to. That is my opinion and my wish so I can hear the wonders of the lead guitar solos.
I really liked the show if I knew about what was going on earlier I would have been there before last Sunday but such is life. I can’t wait until next Sunday it is going to be a great show. I will be sure to scream for my choice LOUD and Clear so they have a better chance of winning even if the majority of the judges vote opposite as me.
OOps I set someone else off. Edwin ready for you and Shaaron lets hear it. No really the show is going to be fun and very exciting. Let the best band win.
July 31, 2008 at 12:10 am
… in my humble opinion, The sound guy shouldn’t be a performer. He is suppose to provide a good balance for the room and feed the band what they need. The dynamics are totally up to the players.
July 31, 2008 at 12:19 am
DU’s trumpet player does more than blow a mean horn, from last week (too funny)…
Well Johnny Rano, I think it’s great that you are taking this contest really seriously . . . You always do the right thing . . . In fact it was just yesterday that you said you had something up your sleeve . . . you got a tattoo, a tongue extension and then had your tongue pierced. Then you said “I’ll show Alice who’s boss . . . ” What did you mean by that Johnny?

Hey Michael, it’s all cool. But you continue to show your lack of knowledge about sound by pointing out this one instance when the guitar should’ve been louder and not realizing that that happens all the time in venues around the world and is not something you can assume is the fault of the sound person
I also have an utter lack of knowledge about sound , but I know enough to know how much I don’t know and what you and I both don’t know is what series of events caused that guitar level to be to low.
Sound mixing is a complicated and nuanced job that is never finished and never perfect. Equipment, players, and stage crew all have a hand in what the finished sound sounds like, not to mention YOUR location in the room, which has a completely different dynamic than other parts of the room , so for all you know, that guitar sounded perfect from where the sound person was working.
Also, you keep saying “And I still feel the sound broad needs to let the guitar player be heard,” which sounds like you are suggesting the sound person is intentionally keeping the guitar too low, which is, again, a testament to your total lack of knowledge about this subject.
Here’s the thing. I heard it too, yes, the guitar could’ve been louder. But you’re acting like that’s a problem all the time, which is simply not true. They encounter different problems at different times and some they can solve and some they can’t and that’s how it is everywhere.
BUT, compared to the million of shows I’ve seen in thousands of venues over the last 30 years, I would say the sound and look of the DreamCatcher Lounge is in the top 10 percentile.
July 31, 2008 at 4:27 am
Dickie — I have to agree with Ed on this one… (geeze people! Why do you keep doing this to me?!? Don’t you know it upsets my whole day when I have to agree w/ Ed??) My background is stage tech and setting sound levels, especially for one band, let alone several bands, is a difficult job to do. Lighting is also tough, especially using a follow spot when you’re not sure where the “spot” is going on stage and off stage. The “enthusiasm” of the particular band also plays into keeping sound levels in check.
The tech crew at Viejas has proven to be top-notch individuals and they should get an extra bonus in their paycheck at the end of this contest for the awesome job they did. This constest is not an easy one from the tech point of view, yet these guys have consistantly risen to the call each night. Kudos to all you guys!!
Looking forward to this Sunday.
July 31, 2008 at 7:45 am
Michael “1″, You can’t always rely on the sound man to boost leads, so bands have to do what they can to be in control. Most quality amps these days have a separate lead channel or lead boost built in so you can step on a switch and boost your own lead.
July 31, 2008 at 8:22 am
On the subject of mixing live sound. For over 12 years I traveled with a band here in San Diego mixing their sound. I have also worked in countless recording studios as well. I do know the difference between live and studio mixing! One thing I used to do with band I ever worked work with, be it a new band to me or not, was to raise the level on whatever channel just a bit, that was doing a solo or needed that extra push to be heard at that moment! When that moment was over I would return the fader to where I had it. Live mixing is an active process. See, a sound person has to keep their eyes on the stage at all times when working with bands they haven’t worked with so they see who’s doing what and when. Believe me, I think the sound people at Viejas are doing a hell of a job and I do know it isn’t easy to work with strange bands and get it right all the time if ever! Every band and every player does things their way and has their own sound. A sound guy has to make what comes at him work on the fly! The one thing I think makes the Viejas sound guys job a bit easier is that he is mixing the clubs drums and are the same drums every band is using. I also know they have a very large board there and he is running a split mix. By that I mean he has two mixes set, one for one side of the stage and one for the other. He should then have each drum kit already mixed all the time and should then really at the start of a new group only have to focus on the other instruments as each band starts and then come back to the drums. I know each drummer plays in their way but overall the drum sound should be close giving the sound guy time to work on the rest of the band in the first song they play.
I like to boost leads or solos to make then jump out on top cause I think that’s the way it should be. Maybe the Viejas sound guy has a different view on this and that is his right as the sound man. Like the players, we sound people do it our way at the time.
My last point as to why I like to boost solos is this. From the stage the players can not hear a thing coming out of the PA system, only the monitors and their own amps and drums. If everyone on stage knew that their solo was low in the mix all the time and turned up to fix that, well them you get a band like 619 that was too loud due their distrust of the sound man. If you as a player knew that the sound guy boosted your solo cause you can feel that from the stage, well that goes a long way in gaining the players trust that their solo and parts are being heard when they should. This would also help in keeping the stage volume to as low a level as the players can stand and still feel the music the way they like! They have to feel the music in a way that turns them on while playing.
These are just my thoughts and opinions on this and I know, opinions are like A-holes. . . everybodey got one and they all stink!!!
July 31, 2008 at 9:02 am
Mine doesn’t.
July 31, 2008 at 9:20 am
Michael 1 – what the heck is a sound broad? Oh, Mr. know-it-all meant sound BOARD. They do a wonderful job at Viejas. I’m glad you have an opinion, but if you think they are intentionally doing something to make the bands sound bad, well, your opinion is wrong.
Ed… I’m up for celebrating your birthday! I’ll even bring you a party hat
July 31, 2008 at 9:32 am
instead of a sound guy it’s a sound broad I guess is what he meant! Should be a sound women huh?
July 31, 2008 at 9:40 am
i jist think his engrish is no gud.
July 31, 2008 at 10:56 am
Does anyone really know what order the bands will be playing in on Sunday? I’d like to hear this from someone who works there and really knows cause I’ve seen here from so many people with different line up’s that I’d just like to know what it really is! Is there a way to find out for sure from a good source?
July 31, 2008 at 11:00 am
Michael “1″; “Edwin ready for you and Shaaron”. Does that mean anything?
For the record. Unlike some, I have not hidden. My name, website and contact info is there for all. Why do some like Michael1 and Gilbert want to be secret? I’ve put myself out there, and taken the flack. I have questioned the rules, laughed at idiots, and promoted my band. I have always been kind and respectful, even if iI have disagreed with someone. I say if you are not providing web site info, at least introduce yourself! Many have, but the ones that don’t seem to be, let’s say, sometimes questionable in their comments.
July 31, 2008 at 11:31 am
The finals are at 8-right? Not 6? I’m going to go this Sun and drag some others with me to see what all of this is about! I’m excited to hear Anger is a Gift, but can’t wait to see them all! I don’t really have a preference at this point so you will have a “non- biased” honest cheer-er in me! See ya!
July 31, 2008 at 11:39 am
Hey what’s up monster drummer? I just got my email so the line up is finalized.
1. Alice and the Cooper Gang
2. Monsters of Rock
3. Anger is a gift
4. Detroit Underground
July 31, 2008 at 11:43 am
Angie! Come up and say hi Sunday, I have a shirt for you:) we’ll take some pics. alright see you there!
July 31, 2008 at 11:51 am
I love to talk about music and sound. I could go on and on.
What Monster Drummer says about running sound is correct but only touches on one approach. The active sound man as opposed to the passive sound man.
In his experience he becomes an important part of the band. Learning over time what he can do to “correct” the balance throughout the performance.
A good band with players that know how to play in an ensemble don’t need the active sound man. They know proper balance, dynamics and consistancy from the beginning of the show to the end. Once the board is set it’s all good.
We’re talking about rock ‘n roll bands here but think about the Marine Corp band. When you see them in a small setting there is no sound system, just them.
July 31, 2008 at 11:53 am
Just so you know Johnny, i kick A$$ on “Killing in the name of” on guitar hero. So you better watch your back HAHAHA! Jk. =P Does Anger have a website? Good luck!
July 31, 2008 at 12:05 pm
Shaaron, he forgot the comma. And it’s an incomplete sentence. What I think he meant to say was…
“Edwin, I’m ready for you and Shaaron, so let’s hear it.”
Basically, he was bracing himself for our impassioned responses. But don’t give him a hard time, we all know how it is to be in a rush, and to write as we think instead of in complete sentences, and hit “submit” before editing. I get that anyway. I give Michael credit for sticking around.

July 31, 2008 at 12:17 pm
JM has the same line-up that was announced last Sunday.
Yes … finals at 8:00 w/ doors opening at 7:00.
Dave — good explanation of the sound… person.
Your statement, “In his experience he becomes an important part of the band. Learning over time what he can do to “correct” the balance throughout the performance.” also shows how difficult is the job here at Viejas with the many different bands in one evening.
Angie… perhaps you are applying for a spot on stage w/ Anger??
July 31, 2008 at 12:20 pm
Dave your right about a lot of things and I have worked with great players but. . . . as players get excited and the energy on stage builds sometimes the sound level does as well! You have to stay on the mix in these cases or the sound will go to hell really fast! I used to mix for a band back in the mid 80’s into the late 90’s called France and then they had some personel changes and turned into Scoundrel. . . you may or may not remember them. They were pretty popular in those days around town. These were some great players and they knew what to do and not to do on stage and yet I had to monitor the sound all the time in order to keep things as right as I could! Everyone can get into the music and lose where they are and it’s then up to the sound man to help keep the mix right. I know you’ll agree with me on this, right?
In the perfect world to set the mix and its good just really never happens and the brass or miltary type bands do not have amps ( well maybe one or two if they have a guitar and bass player) that can get as loud, they depend on either their own air or sheer numbers for sound! I’ve mixed things like that as well in and out of the studio. I guess it really does depend on the players to a great deal but to me it depends on the sound guy to keep it all level!! Tell them when they need to turn up or down when you can! Know what I mean? Otherwise, why even have one?
July 31, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Thanks johnny for the info on the nights line up!!!
July 31, 2008 at 12:33 pm
I agree. I used the Marine Corp band as an example just for that reason, they don’t have any amps.
The passive sound approach doesn’t give up on balance, true. This approach, however shouldn’t affect dynamics. I believe the contest requires the passive approach meaning that the sound operator doesn’t boost the solos but just sets and adjusts the balance and leaves the boosting to the players. Same with the overall dynamics. Its part of the musical performance.
It seems there are some basic mistakes that most bands do. Playing louder than their sound check. Getting louder over the duration of the set. And! Not having a wide enough dynamic range between the quiet part, the loud part and the “regular” volume.
The better bands are at these things the less the sound operator has to fiddle about.
July 31, 2008 at 12:37 pm
You are right on!!! Well, working bars means they drink, get drunk and start thinking their rock stars!! HA!
July 31, 2008 at 12:39 pm
I’m not a rock star I just play one at Viejas.
I’m not a doctor either, I just like to play doctor.
he he
July 31, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Even the number of bodies can change the acoustics of the room. A half full room will sound different than a full room.
July 31, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Monster Drummer: While I totally agree with your approach to doing live sound, that isn’t really how it is being handled at this particular event. And this is no disrespect to you, Dave or any of the sound crew at Viejas.
The sound crew is only responsible for the line and input checks and adjusting the monitors for every band on stage. They are not responsible for lead boosting or any other adjustments once the band starts playing. The RULES were very explicate about this at the very beginning of this competition back in May.
Regardless, I commend the sound and stage crew for what they ARE able to do for very band up there on the stage. My hats off to them and to you for appreciating and understanding the various challenges that all of us face in a unique event such as this.
July 31, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Flash; I cannot see in the rules where it says that the sound crew is not going to adjust for levels during the band’s sets. It says that sound reinforcement will be provided…
Was this rule changed? Or reworded? I just assumed that if sound was provided, that it would be a full service system. You know, a sound man with an agenda could make or break a band. so, maybe what you say is right, and planned that way. HF had many compliments on our sound, so I have no issues in this department. And, I have said several times, we kept our stage volume down so the sound crew could do their job. I’ll check with our professional friends and ask if “mixing” was there for us.
July 31, 2008 at 1:42 pm
I love this conversation about sound. I’m learning so much. This blog is quickly becoming everything I hoped it would be. Thanks for that.
July 31, 2008 at 1:42 pm
I tottally understand where your coming from Flash, I figured as much that the sound guy was taking the passive approach because this is a contest. I know he does EQ for general purpose and all, but doesn’t stand there and work the mix as say a bands own sound guy would do! They really are doing a great job and in no way was I trying to say anything bad about them or their skill level! Sorry if I came accross that way!
July 31, 2008 at 1:43 pm
I guess I should have said ” SOUND PERSON ” sorry for that too!
July 31, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Shaaron: I knew someone was going to make me look this up, hehe. It’s actually on the first page of the “performance contract.” It states towards the bottom “Sound check will consist of a line check and monitor check only.” Also, Casey sent an email to all the bands around June 13 where he said “There are no adjustments made to vocal mics in the monitors.”
To be honest, I think the wording could have been a little more explanatory about the “sound check” part of the contract. I think a number of bands didn’t catch this right away or not at all. But I think you have to read between the lines to get the jist of it.
I recall seeing a half dozen or so bands on stage pointing to their respective monitors (after they had started playing) asking for more ‘whatever’ over the past 6 weeks. I kept thinking to myself “the sound crew’s hands are tied.” Under the circumstances, to do otherwise would have created an unfair advantage of one band over another.
July 31, 2008 at 1:55 pm
The best way I have found to push the leads or solos up for a song is to have a boss eq pedal (120 bucks) in my row of effects. I set it “flat across the dials to the middle position and when I step on it it keeps the same tone as before but “boosts” the decibals up a hair so the guitar cuts through.
When im done soloing i turn it off and I’m right back to the sound guys predetermined volume mix. He just cant turn me down mid solo because it wont be loud enough when go back to the rhythm level.
Whatever.
Good luck and safe travels to the show peeps!
Brian Murphy / Tom Morello / Guitar / A.I.A.G.
July 31, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Brian: Haha, that’s what I used to use when I owned the 2-channel Carvin amp a few years ago. The 3-channel I have now has the lead boost built-in, whew! Hehe….
By the way, while I’m not much of a “Rage” fan I thought you guys were impressive. My younger brother, who came with me to watch the 2nd semis, thought you guys were awesome! (Now he’s a “Rage” fan, hehe).
July 31, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Gee Whiz, Thanks. I cant beleive how nice (and bad) the feedback is on the band. We are humble and weren’t sure how the overall response would be. This is a good feeling, I wont lie.
Best wishes,
A.I.A.G.
July 31, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Flash,
I don’t take offense to your preference for the active sound operator approach. Many top national acts have active support behind the scenes.
Eddy Van Halen just runs around on stage with his guitar. He doesn’t change fx or tweek with the amp, someone else does. You don’t even see these things on stage anymore.
Rush’s Sound operator will trigger vocal fx although he doesn’t mess with the dynamics at all. All of that is done by the band on stage.
These support people rehearse with the band when they get ready to tour and are part of the performance.
The passive approach is preferred in the contest so it leaves it up to the group on stage. Although, during the last show the sound guy was having fun with the echo. :::it was cool:::
July 31, 2008 at 2:49 pm
I’m not a sound guru “geek” (no offense)… but I just wanted to say that I have been impressed with the sound at the shows that I have seen (4).
I am glad, Ed, that you are happy with us, your children. It’s nice to have you happy
Monster Drummer, I am impressed at how very polite you always are (even when you don’t agree). Both you and Shaaron give the men a run for their money and although I am no feminist, I still gotta love it! I remember SCOUNDREL from many years ago. I’d love to meet you at the gig… you’ll see me in my little black dress SCREAMING my heart out for my boys ~ MONSTERS OF ROCK! Come up and say hi!
July 31, 2008 at 2:57 pm
What I find interesting is the many reasons why so many bands have a problem with volume.
One reason is many players have learned their instrument all by their lonesome. When they get together with a group they haven’t learned the nuances of ensemble playing.
July 31, 2008 at 2:59 pm
When you plug in that guitar or bass for the first time it sounds good. Then you turn it up and it sounds better.
The tone really does get better with a little volume behind it.
Drums too.
July 31, 2008 at 3:00 pm
I’m surprised no one else has mentioned this yet. Did anyone else notice the feedback during Detroit Underground? Or the P.A. loudness during AIAG and DU? The latter might be just my ears.
July 31, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Then you have the Ego A**holes who just gotta be “one” louder.
This is the hardest thing to deal with because everyone else comes up to blend correctly then the A hole has to be one louder all over again.
July 31, 2008 at 3:08 pm
When you have one singer and you hear mic feedback from the monitors then it’s his mic.
DU had a minimum of five mics being fed into the monitors. I’m sure the sound guy was frantically searching for the mic or mics causing that feedback.
July 31, 2008 at 3:19 pm
I’ll try and find you Patti, I look forward to it!
July 31, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Flash; Thanks for looking it up. Our contract was sent to my drummer because my computer died, and I was getting a new one set up.
So, with all that being substantiated, doesn’t it make sense to keep the stage volume down, crank up your solos, and maintain a good stage mix? I think on a previous blog the Viejas sound man said he had to take all of 619s instruments out of the PA because the stage volume was so loud. The first time they played, it was a great mix. But in the finals, it was muddled and distorted. MORs mix was loud too, but not as loud as 619. Both are great bands.
BTW, I am a bass player because the loud volume is sooooo much fun. (I was inspired by Paul). I love being able to feel the tone. Why do you think so many bassists sit on their amp?
Gee Ed. I’m so happy that you are happy with us, it being your birthday and all. We will be good for you, at least until the birthday is over.
July 31, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Did I mention… I love to talk about this stuff.
Another issue, a bit more technical on the problem some have with volume.
The bass guitar is more easily felt than heard, especially if you have only 15″ or larger speakers. You might notice that some of the newer, popular bass cabinets have 4 10″ speakers on top. This isn’t for the tone, it’s for the player on stage to hear the loudness of the bass.
If the bass player is too loud in the low end it causes the other players to turn up. This is now known as the 6ONE9 effect. ha ha jk
It is sometimes difficult to sense that the bass is too loud in the low end because the sound kinda just passes you by on stage. It becomes heard about 15 to 20 feet away!
July 31, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Dave, on egos and A-holes. . you sure got it right dude but to get upthere and rock takes an ego. Look at Daivd Lee Roth, HA!
July 31, 2008 at 3:25 pm
ED; PLEASE DON’T READ THIS! PLEASE!
No way I can pull this off as a surprise. So I’ll just put it out there. I’m going to get one of those big birthday cards for Ed. I’ll leave it on a table close to the judges table. Let’s get all the bloggers and bands to sign it for him. Oh dammit, Ed you read it!
July 31, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Hi Shaaron,
Funny how we both commented on bass at the same time!
Hey monster,
Did you ever see the paroday of Dave. I can’t remember the comedian’s name right now but he did this song under the name of “What has God Roth” and the lyric went. “I wish I were you, So I could make love to me”
July 31, 2008 at 3:28 pm
I love it. . . the 619 effect!!!! You funny!
July 31, 2008 at 3:30 pm
NO! I hadn’t seen or heard that one but if you find it on youtube point me to it! Seems youtube has everything! If it were ever filmed or taped. . . it’s there!
July 31, 2008 at 3:34 pm
I have a funny sound bite parody of David Lee in the studio somewhere, always cracks me up. And I love the way Sammy Hagar talked about Ol Diamond Dave, before they did their tour together they were all buddy buddy, about half way thru the tour Sammy say’s I can’t work with that guy. . . he’s crazy!!!
July 31, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Hey Dave, just type “David Lee Rothj Parodys on Youtube” at your google search and the first thing that comes up is that sound bite I was talking about!
July 31, 2008 at 3:51 pm
Ed… tune out.
Shaaron, I think that is a great idea. Ed loves us all so much and everything, makes sense we should make sure he has something he can hold in his hands to remember us all by
I’m bringing him a birthday party hat to celebrate… just in case people forget it is his birthday. Although I am not sure that he’ll want to wear it until he’s finished judging the finals ~ there IS $20 k on the line and I am sure he hopes to be taken seriously.
July 31, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Oh, I remember now… it was Joe Piscopo.
The description of it is funnier than the actual clip which is why you won’t see it on You Tube.
I think the funniest thing Joe ever did was the Miller Lite commercial with the zombies. They’re approaching the shack mumbling “miller lite” in that zombie way.
July 31, 2008 at 4:07 pm

Now if Alice wins this thing, I might be able to take some of the credit…..maybe they’ll offer me a cut of their winnings or at least the tail end of the snake sushi.

Colleen,
You’re an idiot. The judge had no professionlism until you saw her scores and she was rocking out to AIAG!!!??? SO you automatically assumed she had AIAG when she had DU on top!!!?? Thats stupid!! You’re the shallowist person on this blog!! I can read critism and be ok with it, but if you contridict yourself the way you did, you’re retarded!!! Do us all a favor and shut the hell up!!!!

I was just looking back a bit in the blog. Actually I was looking for UMC observer, just wondering who that guy was.
…anyway, I came across this post from Dave Reynolds, “None of the bands used foul language over the mic’s but all of the judges did.”
I gotta laugh :::you know I love ya Dave?::: but in the last semi was this comment from Ed, “…especially after hearing the shocking climax, with the singer howling, “Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me!” over and over like a banshee.”
What was funny to me was that DR from HELP was saying something about what if Muslims were in the audience to hear that profanity from the judges. If you know anything about Rage, well nuff said.
and now you do what they told ya!
July 31, 2008 at 11:22 pm
Dickie; (with two “i”s) I can’t help but remember when the real John Lennon was alive. I think he might have used some off color language once in a while. Remember? He was always sticking his foot into something. Just picture the interview he did in bed after marrying Yoko.
When it was happening from Lennon, it was real. Somehow when it happens from a tribute band, it’s stupid. I think AIAG is good enough to do originals, and cuss in their own words, and get even more respect than they are getting now.

Alright you want cool lyrics?
Im waiting in my cold cell when the bell begins to chime
Reflecting on my past life and it doesnt have much time
Cos at 5 oclock they take me to the gallows pole
The sands of time for me are running low
When the priest comes to read me the last rites
I take a look through the bars at the last sights
Of a world that has gone very wrong for me
Can it be theres some sort of error
Hard to stop the surmounting terror
Is it really the end not some crazy dream
Somebody please tell me that Im dreaming
Its not so easy to stop from screaming
But words escape me when I try to speak
Tears they flow but why am I crying
After all I am not afraid of dying
Dont believe that there is never an end
As the guards march me out to the courtyard
Someone calls from a cell God be with you
If theres a God then why has he let me die?
As I walk all my life drifts before me
And though the end is near Im not sorry
Catch my soul cos its willing to fly away
Mark my words please believe my soul lives on
Please dont worry now that I have gone
Ive gone beyond to see the truth
When you know that your time is close at hand
Maybe then youll begin to understand
Life down there is just a strange illusion.

I just want to say that Dave Reynolds from HELP! is the shining star of his band. I was finding humor in the irony earlier but I don’t want to bag on them.

August 1, 2008 at 9:26 am
…and now, some lyrics.
Evelyn, a modified dog
Viewed the quivering fringe of a special doily
Draped across the piano, with some surprise
In the darkened room
Where the chairs dismayed
And the horrible curtains
Muffled the rain
She could hardly believe her eyes
A curious breeze
A garlic breath
Which sounded like a snore
Somewhere near the steinway (or even from within)
Had caused the doily fringe to waft & tremble in the gloom
Evelyn, a dog, having undergone
Further modification
Pondered the significance of short-person behavior
In pedal-depressed panchromatic resonance
And other highly ambient domains…
Arf she said….

WOMEN WHO HAVE KICKED MY ASS
(Part 1 – Janet)
At the bus stop, age 7,
Janet Abrignani kicked my ass.
She kicked and punched and scratched my face
until blood dripped down my neck.
The other boys laughed.
I still have not recovered.
I’m 43 years old and still,
when I see teenage girls walking down the street,
I duck into an alley.
Sometimes they glare at me with those,
“Don’t-make-me-kick-your-ass-again,” eyes.
August 1, 2008 at 10:07 am
Ohh baby,
where you been lately
how come I’ve never seen you before?
The way you move is driving me crazy
and you know I want to see some more
so come on!
Come on honey
where are you going
don’t you know I wanna talk to you
You drive me wild
with what you been showin’
and if you leave you’re gonna make me blue
so come on!
:::what did I tell you Ed, not very deep:::

Yes I have a day job.

Here’s a love song my friend wrote:
When I die oh I want to rot next to you
When I die just put me in a box built for two
When I die oh I want to rot next to you
Don’t crucify me or bury me at sea
Cause I want to be next to you

August 1, 2008 at 11:39 am
Dave, lyrics don’t necessarily have to be deep. But they have to convey something, and they have to use imagery, and clever turns of phrases are always helpful, but deep is not necessary.
oh, and no, there are no rooms in Viejas, we’re staying in some hotel in Alpine, forget the name. And no, we’re not having a party in the room cuz I know you lushes will never leave.
haha
nah, we’re just gonna stick around after the show, do some drinking, some gambling, and some naked bar dancing.
Patti, bring your thong!

Oh you poor, poor disturbed boys!
August 1, 2008 at 1:49 pm
In response to all the talk about sound, and boosting of guitar solos – this would be a total no brainer if more bands actively practiced dynamics. Quite frankly, I’ve only seen few in this competition who really undertand this concept, & even fewer of them actually advance to the finals. With that said, here’s a little inside tip for all finalists: display dynamics! It shows that you’re pro, that you know how to listen to each other, respect your singer (and other soloists), and that you give even the most mediocre of soundmen no excuse but to make you sound anything less than great.
August 1, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Wow! <— Said loudly and with force
Alicia, your insite on this issue is incredable. <— Said in a quited monotone way
Plus you’re kinda cute. <— whispered

The semifinals competition night was AMAZING! It was awesome to experience so much energy and musical talent all on one night!
AIAG, u guys totally rocked my socks off and got me moshing…can’t wait to do it all over again this sunday for the championship competition =)
Congrats to all the bands who have competed, especially the remaining 4 bands who have made it through an amazing journey to the Championships. Each band is very unique in their own way and may the best band win! =)
Peace and Luv!
August 1, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Haleluia Alicia! I never hear anyone say that and in my experience musicians have a slight tendency to blame the sound person when there is a problem.
Here’s another question along that same line. Who is the person “most” responsible for the dynamic level on the stage? That is, who has the most influence/control over everyone else?
August 1, 2008 at 4:36 pm
OOOh, Johnny! I guess you can call me chopped liver from now on?
ha ha
On your question about who leads the dynamics… hmmm, my first guess would be the drummer. Usually you hear the closed hi hat during the singing then at the louder solo part you get the open hi hat or ride cymbal.
Of course the bass is right there with the drums on this, yes?
Then again, the lead singer can give visual cues.
On Late Night, Paul Schaffer does the conductor thing.
…Then sometimes the sax player leaves the stage and gets the dynamics of the crowd going!
August 1, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Dynamics, is a very complex issue, and only meant for advanced musicians. Here is the format; When someone is singing, everyone else is quieter. When the solo kicks in, the soloist cranks it up, and the band will crank it up too, only a little less. when the singing resumes, everyone comes back down. Sometimes a snare snap is the signal, sometimes it’s just magic.
Again, this info is only for advanced players.
Ed & Alicia; Do you think this might get some of the hard heads thinking?
August 1, 2008 at 5:40 pm
Shaaron,
You know I love ya.
I have to totally disagree with your statement that dynamics are meant for advanced players. My first lessons touched on the concept of controlling your volume which developed into more expressive dynamics as I became a better player. One of the advantages of going through a school music program is you are playing in a group from day one.
It is my opinion that groups that lack dynamics are suffering from a mental problem and not a musical one. Here’s my theory…
I would guess that most Rock ‘n Roll players started in their bedrooms with the headphones learning Led Zepplin. Volume control came in the form of “turn that shit down!” This causes some resentment during those beginning years. When you get together with the kids on the block to jam you suddenly feel like you have earned the right to turn up.
August 1, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Dave, Dave, Dave, I was only trying to get to the guys who have no dynamics, by implying that if they didn’t have ‘em they were not advanced players. Kind of reverse psychology. I love you too.
August 1, 2008 at 6:16 pm
oh, I’ll get back to my laundry…
August 1, 2008 at 7:25 pm
Johnny, Dave, to answer your question as to WHO should be the person to direct band dynamics – that person should be the band member that the majority agrees should “lead” them. In fact, the term “Band Leader,” is used all the time, especially in the corporate job world (corp. events, weddings, mitzvahs, etc..) to represent the person is responsible for the overall presentation of the group, from set lists to dynamics.
In the popular music realm, a more common term is “Musical Director,” or “MD.” Commonly, the singer plays this role, but it can be played by any member – guitarist, keys, drummer, etc. And then you have groups that have a separate “MD” and live “Band Leader.” A great example of such a group, is that of judge Danielle LoPresti’s. While another member acts as “MD” (and overseas the collective artistic presentation of the group, runs rehearsals, etc.), Danielle, the singer and frontwoman, is the live performance leader who helps cue dynamics (when needed), as well as if say… she chooses to add an additional solo somewhere, or take a song back to the top, etc, etc, etc.
Bottom line is that it’s good to have such a person designated in any group, no matter how amateur or professional they are.
August 1, 2008 at 7:45 pm
dynamics? something that is hard to achieve when your lost in the excitement of playing live. but it is what make’s a song MUSIC. whether it’s a slow piece or a fast progression without it the written notes are forgotten[lost] in a guagmire of sound. let the leader lead the music[the drummer] and alway’s remember if the music has vocals the instrumments should be the accompaniment around the vocals. i know every musician who has made it this far already knows this, they’ve been playing for years but sometimes in the heat and excitement of the moment this can be forgotten.
August 1, 2008 at 7:48 pm
Sorry for the typos, ya’ll… thinking i shouldn’t be blogging with the iPhone
August 1, 2008 at 11:29 pm
My two cents on dynamics…
Making music is like making love… you feel the heat and move together, pay attention to what’s going on, feel, listen and react accordingly while enjoying each other’s creativity, the result is synergy, interaction, dynamics.
I believe dynamics is an intangible ingredient that arrives naturally when sensitive artists CONNECT WITH EACH OTHER AND REACT, simple.
No matter what type art is being created, dynamics is the difference between a mediocre artist and and great artist.
Music is an art, and sensitivity has always been the key to good art.
Peace.
August 1, 2008 at 11:54 pm
JV; OMG Being in a band with you would be so hot.

couldn’t have said it better

I would like to thank Ed, Danielle and espeacially Alicia for your detailed constructive critiqueing of D.U.. We understand and I hope we don’t dissapoint.
Be well,

Hey Gin Piston Greg, It was nice meeting you and thanks for the kind words.
Also thank you Dickie for your kind words about my performance on the keyboard, this response from me is coming kind of late because I haven’t been on the blog since Monday and I’m in the process of catching up.
Good luck to all of our competitors in the finals, I’m looking forward to hearing and seeing a great show from each of you.
B.
August 2, 2008 at 9:31 am
JV — I’ve never heard dynamics explained so succinctly and accurately.
It will be interesting watching the Jamie Valle jazz trio “making” music with the “making love” image in my head.
Seriously though… your analogy is right on! Those bands who connect with each other are the ones who do well. And if they can keep that connection at EVERY performance they can soar.
Peace
August 2, 2008 at 9:46 am
Wow I’m glad I asked that question. Now the blog is getting really good. I’d like to hear every ones thoughts on the importance of having good “time”. It seems to be a much overlooked aspect of musicianship especially by those of us who don’t play drums.
August 2, 2008 at 11:13 am
Time? What time is it? LOL Again, it’s the magic! And a drummer that can play with a bass player, without letting the bass player get excited, fall asleep or or get into a “discussion” about who is f****** up the tempo.
August 2, 2008 at 3:46 pm
We should give GOD the glory that we have a gift to play a insturment, and count our blessings that we have life to get up everyday and pick up our insturment or have a voice to sing. People have no idea what it like to not have a parent who bought your first insturment for you and came to every show she had the strenth to come too not here with me anymore for me to see in the audience now motivating me to want to keep playing music. And I am average at best, with my motivation gone now. So now its me and The Man Up Stairs 4 those who believe. Nothing is worth more that that. Life is priceless Pray B 4 U Play so he will bless you to play another day.
August 2, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Jaime, if you and I were in a band together, and we had great dynamics, would that make us gay?
August 2, 2008 at 4:18 pm
yes.
August 2, 2008 at 4:40 pm
Jaime and Ed in a band together… now THAT I’d like to see!! Perhaps you guys could also get that new sax guy in HF! Make sure all your costumes are in agreement so Danielle will be happy!
August 2, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Ed,
We will never be in a “band” together,.
However, we can get drunk together this Sunday after the competition, how’s that?
Ciao bello!
August 2, 2008 at 6:30 pm
Ed…of course I’ll wear my birthday thong… just for you babay! Ready for an awesome birthday I hope! It is going to be a great night!
Oh, and since I haven’t written in a couple of days… here is my shameless plug for MONSTERS OF ROCK!!! They are going to take it all tomorrow
August 2, 2008 at 7:57 pm
I’m on my way to Humphries to hear DU, and I’m dragging most of my band with me. Just got done playing a private block party in the hot Poway sun. Hot? Where is JV?
August 2, 2008 at 8:36 pm
As we are coming upon the final hours when a “winner” will be chosen, I find myself compelled to express my opinions about Battle of the Band contests in general, and the danger of taking them too seriously.
The past few months of judging have been an enlightening experience. I’ve been impressed by the vitriol of some of the fans of bands who haven’t advanced, as well as by some of the musicians themselves.
First of all, does anyone who enters a Battle of the Bands think that perfect justice can possibly be handed down by ANY panel of judges? Or by any combination of judges & popular vote, for that matter?
Well, I for one, do not.
As I see it, musicians entering a band contest should be generally aware that they are doing it for any of the following reasons or combinations thereof – First Place, being of course at the top of most lists;
~ It’s not often that you get to perform on a stage w/ the lights, sound & crew that the Dreamcatcher provides. Being seen & heard with that kind of attention to your presentation is an awesome thing that too many hard-working bands rarely get to enjoy
~ In order for a band to grow, you’ve got to get in front of new people. New people means new potential fans.
~ Chances are good you will be performing in front of new industry folks you may not yet have met, impressed, etc. Again, you want to grow, and when you impress new people, that leads to new gigs, new contacts, new press, etc, etc.
So this brings me to my major point: Bands, or fans, who are looking for perfect justice in contests of this type are simply fooling themselves. It is impossible to come by.
Why?
Because music isn’t football, or baseball, or any sport where there is a score and a clearly defined “winner” & “loser”. On the contrary, music, played well, is ART. And while you can judge art all day long, it always comes down to the listener/observer. Art is subjective.
While Help! may be one person’s idea of absolute cover-band brilliance, Anger Is A Gift is someone else’s. That, for me, is the BEAUTY of music, of art, that it CANNOT be defined or perfectly rated, it’s defined only by each individual’s reception of it.
As judges, I think we’ve each tried, in our own way, to point out the things that either drew us in, or pushed us away, or left us feeling indifferent, on such things as technical issues, performance choices, visual presentation and so forth. But as 3 human beings receiving only 20 minutes of this band’s music on just one night, that’s all we can do. In truth, there is no winner and no loser when one is in the business of making art, accept for how the Artist defines those terms for him or herself.
I will say one more thing, as a general note to any musicians who’ve thrown angry, blaming remarks out with seemingly great ease on this blog after not having received the result they felt they deserved.
As a front-woman of my own band, and a full-time, professional musician of many years, I can easily and readily empathize with your angst, anger, frustration. But let me just remind you that it was your choice to join this imperfect, though exciting, little sporting event. And even if you did not get the justice you know you deserved, you HAVE played your heart out for a bunch of new people, and choosing to be ugly in the aftermath is a recipe for squandering your hard work and making SURE you don’t get the just deserts of your efforts.
There is one band coming to mind who shall remain unnamed by me in this example. They impressed the hell out of me. Though they did not advance that night, I left full of resolve to recommend them to every agent, club booker and talent buyer I could…..and then I saw the onslaught of nasties coming out on the blog. Needless to say, my impression has changed a great deal after reading the tirade of explosive accusations from that band’s front man.
Word to the wise, if you choose to enter a Battle of the Bands contest, go in mindful that perfect justice will never be achieved when ONE winner must be chosen. Go in knowing that if you have what it takes to perform your asses off, you will impress a great deal of people who may never have otherwise seen you…and those kinds of connections can lead to all manner of blessings.

I’ve been busy and I can see so has everyone else on here. I’m glad I stirred up the pot on the sound question. I think we have a good idea how the dynamics and the question of who controls what and why it’s not.
To clear something up for those who accused me of saying I thought there a conspiracy with the sound Broad or should I say Board (pardon my spelling) I never implied that and I never would. That would be cheating which I don’t and even feel there is a reason to do that and WHY. So moving on, I feel everyone will be listening now to the solos in question which is great. I love guitar solos and wish I could play a guitar like that. Tomorrow night is gong to be awesome. We are all going to have a great time.
Shaaaaaaaron what do you want to know about me? You want my address, phone #, My SS#, ask and I will provide it if it makes a difference to you. After all I’m a know it all, I should be able to give “anything” you would want to know. Would you like to know, how to be in the moment and how to breathe in and out without thought and feel the presence of your inner self? To know joy in yourself as a real human being without ego just the heart beat that keeps everyone alive in love with all mankind and feel peace within yourself? No, OK anything else then? :~)
What I do know is I’m not perfect but I do know that everything is perfect. So Rock on girl, enjoy life and feel good.
With love and respect,
Pooley

Tonight was sooo much fun! Detroit Underground had me, Nancy and Garrison sit in with them at Humphries! What an honor!!! DU is very impressive!
We were invited to participate in a fundraiser for their singer, on Sept 9th at Humphries, outside. write that down everybody. It will be a worth while gig.
Michael 1. Just a quick introduction. When I first started blogging, I introduced my self as “Hi, I’m the bass player for Haute Flash”. Kind of lets people know who we are talking to.
August 3, 2008 at 11:08 am
Happy Birthday to you… etc, etc.
See ya later tonight.
August 3, 2008 at 11:22 am

Happy birthday Ed, and Ted. “Ed and Ted”, twins?
August 3, 2008 at 11:58 am
With respect to the whole area of dynamics… don’t forget the dynamics between the band and the audience! When a connection is made between audience and band, the “magic” as Shaaron calls it, makes for a fun and awesome time for all. That “magic” if developed between band members will transfer to the audience assuming the band, especially the leader of the band, pays attention to the audience. Then and only then does it become a momentous and pleasurable experience for all.
I got to witness this moment this past Friday when a band I was watching was playing their last song of the last set. All members grabbed that dynamic, it transferred to the audience and it all became a climactic finale!
All left that moment with a smile upon his/her face… of which any climatic experience should result!
Peace to all… Happy Birthday Ed and Ted… Good luck tonight to all the bands.
August 3, 2008 at 11:59 am
Yeah Ed-whar-doe. . . . happy birf-day to ya dude!!! How old are you not??? heehee!
August 3, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Wanna have a pool to guess Ed’s birthday?
August 3, 2008 at 12:38 pm
age
August 3, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Ed’s wife is young and beautiful, say 23. So either he’s a dirty old man, or looks real mature for her.
August 3, 2008 at 12:52 pm
I vote for dirty old man!!
August 3, 2008 at 12:57 pm
I’d like to thank the ladies from H.F. for helping us out at Humphrey’s last night. It was fun ladies, great job, nice vocals, please come again.
B.
August 3, 2008 at 1:00 pm
Hey B. Thank you! You guys are A+! Good luck tonight! We will be there to cheer you on!
August 3, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Thanks BB and all the guys in DU for the chance to hang with y’all for a minute on stage. Would love to do more with you. You rock. We will be there screaming for you tonight (no gig tomorrow! whew! can spare some vocal stress on your behalf!) To my ears, you have the edge in the musicality department, (esp. after all this blogging and high falutin’ discusions about dynamics) – even if you don’t have a live snake or can play guitar with your feet (which is damn impressive however!) you are still aces in the arrangements department. And what’s not to love with a bunch of horn-y guys dancing
It will be a wild night from one extreme to another, but looking forward to the outcome – wishing all the bands the best, but sticking to my preference. Rock on!
August 3, 2008 at 1:56 pm
My wife is 34
August 3, 2008 at 1:57 pm
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TED!
August 3, 2008 at 2:23 pm
My guess for Ed is ten years older, you youngster…
August 3, 2008 at 3:40 pm
My guess is that Ed is 47 years old and is a dirty old man!!
August 3, 2008 at 3:53 pm
I want to thank HF for coming out and sitting in w/us last night. I had a blast and it was the highlight of my evening and I got to play in a key that I never get to.
Ed, Take it from us… Those Ladies can ROCK!
Good luck to all the bands tonight!
JR

JR… the fun starts at 8:00.
August 3, 2008 at 5:08 pm
Thank you.
August 3, 2008 at 6:10 pm
Last minute prediction:
1. MöR
2. DU
3. Alice
August 3, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Shaaron. It’s good for you that your put across an attitude of authority– even when it’s about subjects (for advanced musicians) that you know nothing about. Your treatise on dynamics is a hoot!
August 4, 2008 at 8:18 am
I’d like to send out a big thank you to all family, friends and fans ( not only D.U. fans but, all fans), in attendance at last night competition. The best part for me was being able to converse with all the musicains from the other groups back stage. M.O.R., you guys are great and a class act on and off of the stage. Alice, excellent show, I enjoyed getting a chance to meet and speak with you in the dressing room, thanks for the t-shirt, I’m wearing it proudly. A.I.A.G., way to represent, you guys thtow down hard. And a special thanks to Jaime, Alicia and Ed for all the words of wisdom and doing a great, although difficult job during this contest.
Be well and be Blessed my friends,
B.
August 4, 2008 at 8:20 am
Oh, and a Big thank you to Evonne Darby our mgr. (D.U.), for all the prep work done in preparing for this contest.
August 4, 2008 at 9:06 am
Good morning everyone!! What a GREAT time we had last night!! A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to DU for their awesome WIN!!! WHAT A SHOW they put on!! The floor was packed with AMAZING FANS!!
I want to say that ALL the bands played their hearts out, and I commend each and every one of them on a job well done!!
I also want to give props to the lead singer, Ron, of MOR, for having SUCH a great attitude after taking 3rd. I didnt get a chance to talk to anyone else in the other bands personally, but was told that the general attitude of everyone was amazingly positive….only a few “not so thrilled”… I believe EVERY ONE of you in ALL 4 bands are WINNERS!!! You ALL did a GREAT job, and you should be very PROUD of yourselves!!
It was a GREAT SHOW!!!
Again………CONGRATULATIONS DETROIT UNDERGROUND……!!
David, Stiletta, BERNARD (I’m a bit partial to…
, Mike, Johnny Rano, Jack, Andy, Dean and Joe…….You guys ROCK!!!!
August 4, 2008 at 9:37 am
Wow, what a great summer it has been! Being a part of the UMC was an experience of a lifetime and I am truly honored and grateful that I got to be a part of it. Thanks to all the friends, family, and new fans who came out to support us. Of course I have to give special thanks to our #1 cheerleader Patty. You have been an incredible friend and we are very grateful for your support.
And a big congrats to all the bands who played in the competition, whether or not you made it past the first round. Considering that hundreds of bands tried out, if you were there at all, it speaks volumes about your band. HF, you girls rule! 619, you’re a class act!
As for the judges, your wisdom and experience gave the UMC credibility. You guys had a tough job, not only in judging so many excellent bands, but also in dealing with the backlash you received for your comments and picks. But as far as I was concerned, I feel you called it as you saw it and considering your knowledge and caliber as musicians and members of the music industry I was thankful to have the opportunity to receive your critiques. An opportunity like that doesn’t come around too often. Now that the contest is over, expect to see me at one of your gigs.
And a big thank you to the Viejas staff and stage crew. Every time we walked in the door you made us feel like winners. And I have never met a more calm and professional stage production person than Casey. Considering the stress it must have been to deal with so many bands, you always made sure we got on stage with confidence. Thank you for that.
Of course I have to give a shout out to the finalist, ACG, AIG, and DU. The level of musicianship you all possess is inspiring, but it is overshadowed by your personalities. You’re all 100% 1st class acts and I am honored and humbled to have played on the same stage as you. We made it to the finals! How cool is that! We’re all 1st place as far as I’m concerned. I will definitely make it a point to come check you guys out in the future.
ROCK ON!!!
August 4, 2008 at 10:33 am
Tom,
my sincere appologies…
You are a strong drummer my man! Congrats.
Well… back on July 19th I predicted AIG, DU and Alice.
I got the top two although not in order.
…anyone did better?
August 4, 2008 at 10:50 am
I must say that all bands brought their “A” game last night and what a show it was! I also have to say that I work with the Alice guys on their show, I was one of the monsters that cut Alice’s head off haha! Too fun!! I think it’s too band that 4th place didn’t have some kind of prize as well, but that’s the way it goes I guess. It really was a great show last night! I thought we were able to make up for what some thought was a bad show on their last show before last night, ACG can and do rock hard!! I love you guys!
I guess the best of the best won although I think it’s a tough one to call since they all rocked it hard! MOR, you guys were great and I loved your song choices, Not an AIAG fan at all. . . sounds like noise to me!! DU, awsome is all I can say and well done on your win guys and gal!!!
August 4, 2008 at 10:58 am
Hey Monster,
I spoke with Alice after your set. I didn’t get a chance to say hi but I loved the guillitine or whatever that thing is called.
August 4, 2008 at 11:02 am
I made that thing!! Ha! It was an IT gear rack and some scap wood! Alice (Bruce) and I spent some time working the kinks out on that thing! He got hit in the head with a piece a wood a few times before we got it right! Along with some hair getting pulled out!
Also, sorry bout my comments about AIAG, I guess I’m just getting old or something cause they sure seem to be popular there! Congrats to em for their win as well!
August 4, 2008 at 11:03 am
I have a question, on my blog, a few back I have a smiley face . . . how’d that get there?
August 4, 2008 at 11:04 am

August 4, 2008 at 11:34 am
You are a nerd but a knowing one! Ha! You’d think I was too since I’ve been in IT for over 13 years! I didn’t know this one!
August 4, 2008 at 11:46 am
I was there with Mary. We had a great time and watched the show from upstairs.
but he covered it well and switched to a new bass pretty smooth-ly. :::missed a couple of notes coming in:::
Both of us had it wrong on the results and even between us there were differences.
DU had the best musical performance overall, but AIAG owned their set totally. So much energy.
MOR had a great set! Loved War Pigs. I noticed the bass player broke a string! yikes
Alice brought the show they needed to. Breaking out of the coffin, the deamons (or whatever) standing guard, the blonde coming out on stage and annoying Alice, the sword through the billion dollar baby and ending with heads rolling! too cool! The competition was fierce though so ?
great show! maybe next year the fourth place can get a gift card for china camp or something?
August 4, 2008 at 11:54 am
Hi everybody. I can’t believe it’s all over. What with Sunday nights now being my husband and my date night, it will all seem so empty. I had so much fun, and made many new friends. The blog has filled my “housewife” days with a much needed diversion, that I will miss.
Thank you to the judges who encouraged us, (HF), made us feel special, helped us professionally, and still managed to give a critique that has helped us improve our act. Ed, the fun we have had bashing gender, and exchanging ideas has made me feel that you are a friend. Thank you for everything. Alicia, you are so young and beautiful, but mostly girl, you know your stuff! You have impressed me with your knowledge, and professionalism! Danielle, you rock! You are so talented, beautiful, and you can put it out there! You nailed your critiques, and you did it with humor, class and a bluntness that is well understood in this business. Jaime, I love the way you word things, your sexy sense of humor is a riot, and, oh yeah, you know your shit! Thank you for keeping it real, light and not making anyone feel inferior, (cuz musically, we are).
Bands; Wow! What can I say?
DU; Thank you for all the encouragement, kind words, letting us sit in with you, sharing your sax player, and just being so damn fun! Congratulations, you earned it!
MOR; Sergio, you are a class act! Tom, you rock! The rest of you are fantastic. I was not a metal fan before I heard you, now I am!
AIAG; WOW! The energy you spend in a half an hour would power my life for a year. Whatta show!
ACG; I was throughly entertained!
Jump Start; Dave, thanks for the help, letting me sit in, and all the fun on the blog!
Colleen, my new friend, Patty, and bloggers, thank you for keeping it clean, smart and fun.
Mostly, thank you to Viejas. Live music has bee on the decline over the last few decades. Thank you for keeping great venues open to live music. Haute Flash is looking forward to a long and happy relationship with the casino.
Casey, sound and light crew, great job! Thank you for making us feel like stars for 20 minutes!
Jason and Joe. Good job! With all the variables, whew, you did it, and from my perspective, it was a hell of an 11 week show. Thank you!
Blubber blubber, sniff sniff, gee guys, I had so much fun!
August 4, 2008 at 1:55 pm
A.I.A.G.!!!!!!!! Whether you are a Rage fan or not these men owned the freaking stage last night!!!!! There was so much energy on the floor it was sick! I was waiting for someone to jump off the stage and surf. Hey, if didnt have a prior broken neck, boys you know that would of been me! Ahhh I was left speechless in a oh soooooooo good way : )
And to our 1st & 3rd place winners, DU and MOR, you guys were awesome too. I was shaking my booty and throwing up my hands for both of your sets. Come on how could you not dance to DU?? Good times.
As much as I would of loved for A.I.A.G. to take first I am verry happy with the top 3 bands. You guys deserved it!!!!!!
August 4, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Sure is quite out here today! Guess all the excitement is over now!!! I wonder if they would ever do this for original bands and their own music.:!:
August 4, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Awww… thanks Sergio. You know that you all are my band
I always have a great time with MONSTERS! … Carolyn, Alta and I are fans for life! It was so much fun last night. You ROCKED your set and like always, you are a class act. I’m glad you won some cash, I wish you could have been #1 (you are in my book)…. I think you will find that a lot of NEW fans will be showing up at your gigs! Oh, and congratulations on booking with the Second Wind! Now we’ll be able to see you even MORe!
Congratulations to all the other bands that were ALL in their groove last night!
Johnny Rano, WOW, you play a mean sax! It was nice talking with you, you really seem like a nice man. Congratulations on the big win!
Shaaron it was very nice of you and Nancy to put together Ed’s birthday card… I’m sure he loves it. I’ll be at a HF gig in the near future, without doubt!
Ed, Ed, Ed… Happy Birthday man! You were having fun last night and that is very cool. You have made this whole UMC Battle of the Bands a really fun time. I’ve loved being a part of your blog family and look forward to next year!
August 4, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Well, my little brain is operating on too few hours of sleep, but I wanted to come on and say what a good time I had last night. I’ve never seen the DreamCatcher that packed before!
Ed, hope you had a good birthday sir. That was the biggest freakin birthday card I’ve ever seen. I wonder when you’re going to get around to doing a writeup on the final after a long night of partying. We’ll just have to cut you some slack.
Alicia and Jaime it was nice to meet you. If you have a band mailing list please put me on it and I’ll come see you some time – tom@monstersofrockband.com. Heck, any of the bands can add me for that matter. If anyone wants to get on ours here’s the link http://monstersofrockband.com/blog/mailing-list
DU – congrats! I think I met 5 out of the 10 of you. It’s tough to do battle against full time seasoned musicians such as yourselves and an honor to share the stage with you.
AIAG – I enjoyed hanging out with you guys and man was I blown away. I don’t know how you can eat a pizza, then go on stage with all that energy. You guys have a hell of a stage presence and very impressive crowd support for being out of town. You kicked serious ass.
Alice – Unfortunately I was backstage during your set, so I couldn’t see the show you put on, but I could sure hear that you guys brought it up to another level last night. I met your drummer last night – another cool dude.
To the fans – When the guy was measuring crowd response I think his hair blew back it was so loud. Thank you so much for your support. A virtual hug or handshake to all I didn’t get to thank personally last night. We felt very Hollywood when all those flash cameras were going off at the end of the night.
Dickie – no worries man. You just inspired me to work harder.
Shaaron, nice to finally meet you last night. I’m sure HF will be keeping quite busy for a long time to come through all the exposure and networking opportunities you’ve had.
Viejas – Thank you for selecting Monsters of Rock to be in this competition. It was great exposure for us. What a great venue and staff you have.
August 4, 2008 at 5:29 pm
What an incredible night! All the bands brought their A-game, I was very impressed and had a blast listening to each one. Congrats to all the bands for making it to the finals!
…MOR… you guys got down and dirty up there… I loved your show!
Alice— i got the goosebumps!! wow
AIAG, like Christina above said, you owned that stage lastnight! what a performance… definitely a huge fan of yours!!
DU– I have been to a good handful of your shows but lastnight was the show of all shows… you guys rocked it– and more importantly, you had fun! I’m so happy and proud you guys got 1st!!
Thank you everybody for such a cool experience lastnight! It was AMAZING to see great live music, root for my bands… yes I said bands.. and hang out with a very fun and ecclectic group of people!!
~Michelle
August 4, 2008 at 6:14 pm
what a great night of music!! all four band’s owned, and ruled that stage when they were up there! how honored and lucky i felt to be one of the fan’s last night. to see and listen to four excellent band’s in one BIG show and not even have to pay for an expensive ticket to get in! all four groups brought their own diverse, unique, powerful, tasty blend of rock to that stage and they all performed like stars! every member of this competition should know that most of us will never know or experience what you all did last night! the experience of being one of the few very BEST! thank you for sharing your gift.
August 4, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Everyone bought their “A” game for sure. One hell of a night controversy and all.
Congrat to DU for your win I enjoyed your show.
MOR you guys rock I was impressed.
Then there was AIAG. I always thought rap was crap never liked it but last night I became a big fan of your style. You most certainly owned the night. Even if the judge didn’t see it (or they had other instructions it’s beside the point now) That was a fantastic performance very very professional. Everyone I talked to said you blew it away and you did. All I could say was WOW.
You know when Jamie said there is going to be boos I knew then DU had the grand prize. Because everyone knew AIAG was by far the best but DU is the house band so……….not saying DU wasn’t very good I thought they were very good 2nd place at best.
Thats right I stirred the pot again and this time I mean what I’m suggesting and saying but it is after the fact now it is my opinion and many other here but it seems no one is saying it. Oh Well, Leave it up to me to say it.
Next year should be better yet. I will be at the 1st show this time now that I know this is a happening thing to do on Sunday nights.
August 4, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Well, what can I say? First of all, I wanna congratulate DU for their victory last night! THey were good! ACG, I loved watching you guys on stage! I’m not a big Alice Cooper fan, but it was entertaining!! MOR, you guys are really great! I will have to say that the singer does not fit his voice, but he can wail!! Maybe long hair and a perm will fit him nicely!!
And then there is Anger Is A Gift!!
I did feel like they put on thier best show for last, and i’ll go as far saying they blew everyone out of the water!! Brian,Johnny,Jose and Nick, I’m glad you guys had this opportunity to see what others have to say about you guys!! You now see for yourselfs what we see, from our perspective and i’m glad this experience let you guys see that!! In my opinion, the better of the bands won, but I believe it had to do with musicianship and fan base. And as for all the people that did not know, this was the first time AIAG played in San DIego area, so I believe they impressed a couple people, enough for the people to make it to another AIAG show!! (maybe next year, the decible meter will explode!!)
We are all forgetting that this is a judged event! Judges have the last say! This blog crap is great for opinion! But all these mothafuckers have no say on who wins (unless they outdo the decible meter) SO, if you’re opinion is the AIAG is the best and DU sucks or vice versa, so be it!! You guys are all entitled to your opinion!! but in the end, the judges chose the winner… And the winner is Detroit Underground!!!
PLEASE AIAG………….. Play shows in San Diego!!! You now have a fanbase down here!!! PEACE!!!!!!!
August 4, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Musicianship= Technicality!!!
August 4, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Michael “1″
Seriously, you’re so full of shit. (I mean that a good way) I bet you worked at Tower records at one time or another.
Next year you will bitch about something else, and so on…
you know you’re irrelevant and nobody cares what you think or say.
Quite an ignorant individual unable to right a full coherent sentence.
This blog has given you a chance feel to good by implying this and that, now the end is here, what will you do know? write a book maybe?
August 4, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Tricia, you don’t write so well yourself.
right – write
know – now
duh
August 5, 2008 at 12:26 am
BLOG! the name say’s it all or should it be BLAH[as in blah, blah, blah] here we go again with the negative Sh*t. thanks mando[or is it macho,or maybe mono?] for making the annoying bloger really annoyed! don’t be jealous because your favorite band’s frontman was a great performer but not really a vocalist? your crack at MOR’s singer was ANNOYING! and only made your praise for AIAG[who is also a great band!] seem less great because it came from the mouth of one of their fan’s-YOU.
August 5, 2008 at 8:25 am
…Anger Is A Gift…
SD show…… SOON!!
…. please & thank u….
August 5, 2008 at 6:34 pm
annoying blogger,
I wasnt bad mouthing MOR singer!! I just said his voice didnt fit his appearance, but thats cool!! I’m sorry if you took it the wrong way and i’m sorry to the singer from MOR if I disrespected him!!! Yeah, my fav band didnt win, but that’s cool! I’m not bitter! Sorry again dude! I’ll buy you a beer next year! Peace!
August 5, 2008 at 6:35 pm
OH, and its MANDO… short for ARMANDO!!
August 7, 2008 at 7:38 pm
thank you mando. MOR’s singer also has his own original group which fit’s his look. you can’t blame him for not wanting to wear a wig. if he was not a great vocalist he would have to play dress up.
