At Last, The Finals!

[Author's Note: [Author’s note: If this is your first time visiting the UMC blog, you might want to check out the INTRODUCTION first.]

And the winners are….

Detroit Underground

Anger is a Gift

Monsters of Rock

Alice and the Cooper Gang (which did not win any money, but have won my heart forever, I will never forget you guys).

So, can you believe that show last night? Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow! I am still buzzing on it. Every band just blew me away. Starting with Alice who put on such a performance: so good, so fun, so nutty – the whole time during their set, all I kept thinking was, Well these guys obviously have it in the bag.

Then, MOR came up, and I thought, Oh shit, how am I going to pick between these two bands? Well, whatever, clearly Alice AND Monsters will end up in the top two spots.

But then Anger came on, and I thought . . .

Cut the shit dudes! You can’t honestly expect me to choose between these three bands. Oh well, there’s no doubt that these guys will all place because poor old Detroit Underground doesn’t have a chance in Hell and oh, look, here comes DU now. I sure hope they suck so I won’t feel bad when they lose and… hmm, that riff doesn’t sound so bad, nor that horn arrangement, nor that part, or that, wow, that was good too, and that! – that was really good – and that, and that and, holy fucking shit on a sugar cube, these guys are CRUSHING it!

Damn you Detroit Underground! Damn you all to all-Hell for being so spectacular! And damn you Alice, and Monster, and Anger for making this the hardest decision anyone’s had to make since Metallica decided to cut their hair.

There were just so many goose pimple moments, like when Alice entered the stage by coffin and burst into “Feed my Frankenstein,” and of course, the outrageous finale, with the beheading of Alice. Then there were the myriad of goose pimples for Monsters of Rock – such as on War Pigs – which was unbelievable, and during Anger’s set, when Johnny screamed, “Wake up! Wake up!”; and DU’s unbelievable, original take on “Midnight Hour” – I had some many goose pimples running up and down my arms and legs last night, you would’ve thought we were in a meat locker. In fact, I figured it might be a good idea to use the amount of goose pimples moments (GPMs) each band had given me to determine my picks.

Anyway, before getting to the scoring, I’d like to say a word about Alice and the Cooper Gang. Now, I am not going to sit here and spout the tired cliché of, “There were no losers tonight,” because that’s a kettle of bullshit.

There are always losers. But with 32 thousand dollars on the line, to go so far as to chop off your head and still walk away with nothing except a bloody stump where your neck used to be, well if that ain’t losing then I don’t know what is.

However, I’d like to make a distinction between a “loser” in a competition, and “loser” as in, a state of being. Because, while Alice and the Cooper Gang did not win any money, they are the farthest thing from “losers” I could imagine. These guys put on, no question, the most memorable show of the night. And their performance is engraved in my memory.

When I was on stage announcing the winner last night, and I said, “It breaks my heart that somebody has to lose,” I wasn’t exaggerating. My heart was truly broken. Really, I just loved the Alice Gang so much, it was killing me inside to send them away with nothing, and my innards were bleeding all over the place when I saw them at the side of the stage, waiting anxiously to hear the news, then to see the disappointment in their faces – ugh, that was difficult. Guys, seriously, you were great and I really, really really hope you come back next year.

So, without further adieu, here are the tallies from last night, starting with Crowd Noise (for an explanation on how crowd noise is scored please visit the INTRODUCTION):

Crowd Noise

DU – 121.0

Anger – 120.6

Monsters – 119.6

Alice – 117.1

You may have noticed, this is in direct correlation with the order of the sets (the later your set, the louder the crowd noise), and, in direct correlation to the prize places each of them took – so yes, it’s beginning to seem like your position in the set, especially this late in the game, can be hugely important. As you know, we select it randomly.

Next I’ll break down the judges’ scores for you, minus crowd noise. In other words, who would’ve won if crowd noise was not a factor. And the answer to that question is, we have a tie:

Judges’ Picks – Combined

Anger – 257.5

MOR – 257.5

DU – 255.5

Alice – 242.5

Next, let’s look at individual judge’s scores.

Judges’ picks – Individual

Judge #1) Jaime Valle

MOR – 88

Anger – 85

DU – 84.5

AC – 79

Alternate Judge #2) Alicia Champion

DU – 86

Anger – 86

MOR – 84.5

Alice – 82.5

Judge #3) Edwin Decker

Anger – 86.5 (+ 8 GPM’s)

Mor – 85 (+7.5 GPMs)

DU – 85 (+7 GPM’s)

Alice – 81 (+6 GPMs)

So there you have it. As you can see, it was extraordinarily close, with ties all over the place, and almost no consensus, which seemed to mirror the crowd’s reaction since everybody I spoke with pretty much had different combinations of winners. It was just too close to call and really, honestly, I didn’t want to.

Lastly, I want to say thanks to everybody involved. I was going to rattle off a long list of “thank you” shout outs, but then, realized, that would be a huge mistake because I undoubtedly would forget somebody – somebody important – and that person would feel left out, and then he or she would be sad, which would make me sad, which would make me want to eat ice cream, which would make me fatter, depressing me further and sending me on a drinking binge, after which I would come home and beat my wife, who would divorce me, making me suicidal, then I’d jump of a bridge, and then Colleen and Shaaron would have no one to pick on so it really just wouldn’t be good for anyone. Suffice to say, thanks to everybody involved with this show: Thanks to the stage and sound crew, the bar staff, the management, the bands, the judge’s, the tribe and most of all, thank you – you wacky, crazy, nutty, adorable kooks – YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU!

Oh, and to the people who wished me a happy birthday last night – please click here for a special thank you message.

  1. ANGER IS A GIFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! COME BACK TO SAN DIEGO!!!!!!!!!!

  2. WAIT A MINUTE… IS THAT WRONG???? IF AIAG AND MOR WERE TIED FOR A COMBINED SCORE, WOULDNT OF AIAG WON THE COMPETITION WITH THE DECIBLE METER SINCE THEY CAME 2ND IN CROWD RESPONSE??? ACCORDING TO ED, DU WON THE DECIBLE DEAL, BUT WAS SECOND BEHIND AIAG AND MOR IN COMBINED POINTS….

  3. Still can’t believe MOR did not come in 2nd…Anger is a “gift” that I would return….

I am a huge alternative fan and frankly I had to leave shortly after the first song as my ears were ringing!…I guess the comments from the judges of weeks before to groups like 619 being to loud…fell on deaf ears last night….

Sorry I don’t agee with Mando….Anger is a Gift…can take it on back to L.A….

I do agree with Ed …there were tons of goose bumps last night…and I did enjoy the show..

MOR best rock and roll cover band in So Cal…Hands down!!!!

  4. Wow, that makes me happy and sad all at the same time.

  5. I herad that Tom….kind of sucks to know the count…almost wish I didn’t see it…I should have brought that bull horn..or we can blame it on Alta she was in L.A. last night instead of being front and center yelling at the show…(Just Kidding!)

    LOL…STAR

  6. how come anger is a gift didnt win.. .4 dehind DU on the decible, but 2 points over them on the judges..

  7. As I said in the blog, please review the Introduction for an explanation on how crowd noise is applied to the score sheets.

  8. UMC observer Says:

    Star..

The reason MOR didn’t get second is because YOU didn’t scream loud enough.. The judges had them tied so unfortunately it was the fans that let down MOR. so you’re.. dumb

  9. Hey Edwin, just curious, do you have the break down for each category?

    SHOWMANSHIP (40%)
    1. Appearance / Costumes
    2. Choreography / Stage Presence
    3. Charisma / Audience Interaction
    4. Overall Style

    MUSICAL ABILITY (40%)
    1. Vocal Performance
    2. Music Performance

    AUDIENCE RESPONSE (20%)
    1. Participation / Response
    2. Crowd Noise / Applause (via decibel reading)

  10. i just got a call (how did you get my number anyway?) from a very nice lady who really enjoyed the show (good to hear) but believed that the numbers on this blog showed that we gave 1st place to the wrong band (disastrous).

Not True…this is a simple misunderstanding.

DU 255.5 (judges) 30 Crowd (10 points per judge) 285
AIG 257.5 (judges) 22.5 crowd (7.5 points per judge) 280
MOR 257.5 (judges) 15 crowd (5 points per judge) 272.5
    ALICE 242.5 (judges) 7.5 crowd (2.5 per judge) 250

    I hope this helps.

BTW thanks to all of you for coming to the UMC!! This has been a lot of fun for all of us casino entertainment people. We don’t get to see this kind of variety on a regular basis – this is just exactly what we envisioned when we created the UMC. You people are all rockstars and I want you to know how much the Viejas team appreciates you.

Come back in September and sing your hearts out at Viejas Idol. No EPK’s required for this one. If you have the gumption to get up on that big-ass stage it’s all yours. keep an eye on the Reader, City-beat, and http://www.viejas.com for more details.

  11. A.I.A.G.!!!!!!!! Whether you are a Rage fan or not these men owned the freaking stage last night!!!!! There was so much energy on the floor it was sick! I was waiting for someone to jump off the stage and surf. Hey, if didnt have a prior broken neck, boys you know that would of been me! Ahhh I was left speechless in a oh soooooooo good way : )

And to our 1st & 3rd place winners, DU and MOR, you guys were awesome too. I was shaking my booty and throwing up my hands for both of your sets. Come on how could you not dance to DU?? Good times.

As much as I would of loved for A.I.A.G. to take first I am verry happy with the top 3 bands. You guys deserved it!!!!!!

Here are some great AIAG pics on my site…

  12. UMC Observer…

Does it make you feel “cool” to call someone dumb??…first of you don’t know me…2nd off ask anyone who really “does” know me and how I feel about MOR…

They will tell you I yelled my heart out for them last night…It is fans like myself that help support a band like MOR and MOR fans are a big part of why they made it as far as they did …I am in my 50’s and can rock to the heavy S**T with the anyone 30 years my junior….

but hey…it’s takes a big person to call some else dumb…I thought this was at least high school and not grade school..LOL.

Again…I had a great time…and congrats to all the bands who showed us last night that it takes “all types” of music to make the world go round….

I say, Dance on..(DU) Headbang on (AIAG) F**KING Rock on (MOR) and to The (ACG) long live the SHOW!!!!!

  13. I don’t care if it wasn’t really your birfday buddy- we had a blast corralling every musician in the house to sign the card. What a night! I must admit tho, I had to leave during Anger – even with earplugs, it was sheer auditory assault. But the whole program has been worth the trips every week from North County to share the excitement. I look forward to seeing everyone at Humphrey’s for Dave’s benenfit show – we will rock some more sox off and support our fellow musicians. All the bands at the UMC were amazing and I am honored to have had the chance to share the same stage with such pheonominal talents, not to mention the benefits of the judge’s comments – thank you thank you thank you! See you on the 9th!
    Rock On!

  14. Nancy, you warmed my cockles you did. I wish it really was my birthday so I don’t have to feel guilty about it. I will make it up to you guys by coming to see your next gig that I have free.

  15. UMC observer Says:

i suppose i’d have to answer your question with another question..

Does it numb the pain of your band coming in third to put down the better band?

at least MOR got something.. and for being in your 50s you can still whine like youre in grade school..

just be happy they placed and hope they do better next year, instead of putting down other bands and starting off the blogs with all your negativity..

  16. UMC……..’HAVE A NICE DAY!!”

  17. My suggestion for next year would be to consider making talent 50% and crowd response 10%

I think it should be more of a tie breaker like a shootout in soccer.

.4db ended up being a huge factor.

This is just an opinion and suggestion for next time. I’m not complaining about the outcome for this year – rules are rules. It was still an awesome experience. I’d like other opinions on this.

  18. UMC Observer has always been kinda a jerk here on the board. He is an angry bully and just plain mean-spirited. I have known Star for YEARS and she is one of the most dedicated and loyal fans in the world. If she likes your music and she is able to be there for you… she IS. If you knew Star, like I do, you would know she is a total sweetheart without a negative bone in her every so wonderful body!

Not liking a group (like ANGER) isn’t being negative. It is having an opinion. She didn’t call names like you did. Get real. I am a TOTAL Rocker and AIAG was too load for me too. I can appreciate that they do great RAGE imitation… I just don’t like RAGE. That doesn’t make me a hater.

Where MOR placed in this thing has nothing to do with their talent. Obviuosly the judges loved them, and so did most of the people at the show. It was us, their true fans that let them down and I feel VERY bad about that. I personally screamed, yelled and did everything I could to promote them. Thing is, it just wasn’t enough.

I agree with Tom, and others who have said the same thing. There has to be a better way of figuring in the crowd portion of this thing. When you say it is only 10% of the total picture, somehow that just doesn’t wash with how much it has changed the outcome week after week.

I had a great time. I’m glad I was, in my own little way, a part of the fun-fest that was the UMC Battle of the Bands. Thanks to everyone at Viejas – you guys are awesome. I have to say that Ryan, the hands on club manager, was amazing and so helpful. I’ll be at Viejas again soon!

  19. B.Battle Says:

    Hey Ed,

Like Mr. jlang, I would also like to see the break down of each category if possible, not just the final tally.

    Thanks,

    B.

  20. Patti,

Currently crowd response is weighted at 20% and PLEASE don’t feel like you let us down! You certainly did your part. If you read back to week 1 semi final, Leon had a very good post about how sensitive the meter is, so there’s a little bit of luck involved. If you do read the introduction you’ll see why it’s such a big factor.

  21. Ed; You birthday bozo. The next Haute Flash gig is Aug 16th 6 to 10 at the Galley at the Marina in Chula Vista. See you there.

  22. Sorry guys, I just have to disagree with y’all. If you look at any musical competition like this, crowd response factors in usually between10-25 percent of the overall weight. I think, at 20 percent, we’re right there in the norm.

I imagine, being a judge, you would expect me to vote for the option that gives my input more weight. But I’m looking at this from a fan’s perspective. As a person who comes each Sunday to see a great show. And, I just love the way the room goes nuts when they rush the dance floor, and cheer the db meter, and the extra work the bands do to get their people to come down in my mind goes a long way to filling up the room, which, during the prelims is so necessary. Remember, during the prelims, crowd noise rarely factored, so, if it factored any less, there would be that much less incentive to push the fan base. We had some slow nights in the middle there and I would hate to see them any slower.

    That’s my opinion anyway.

Jlang, Monster Observer – I’m not going to post the individual tallies for a number of reasons, the first being that I’m lazy, and that I spent much of the day yesterday working on the blog, and I have another deadline coming up tomorrow, and the last thing I want or need to be working on right now is data entry.

The other reason is I don’t have the other judge’s permission to do so,

Finally, I really don’t feel like giving people yet another reason to to rip us apart simply because they think I should’ve given MOR a 10 on vocals instead of a 9.99999.

    Just not something

Shaaron, please put my email address on your mailing list so that I can get the gig updates. IN FACT, any of the bands who played this event have my permission to put my email on their list. It is Ed AT edwindecker.com.

Obviously, when typing it in, use the real @ symbol. I just wrote it that way to avoid webspiders.

Last thing I want to say is to UMC and Star. Please consider your string finished. I don’t really care about who started what, I just want it to stop now. I refuse to ever let this blog turn into what it did a few weeks ago. So, any more insults will be immediately yanked.

  23. My family and I had lots of fun. It was so exciting. We were there every time “Anger” played. ( I’m Johnny’s Mom ) All the bands were very entertaining. But why don’t they have the contest on Saturdays when so many more fans can come and cheer for their favorite bands. So many friends from L.A. wanted to come out but said it was too far and they have to get up early for work the next day. But like I said before, we all had a great time !

  24. Bloggers;
Sometimes this blog got a little nasty, X rated, and insulting. I have tried to keep it classy, and with the exception of the one time I got fed up with Gilbert insulting me and my band, I’ve kept it nice. I stated my concerns, and promoted my band.
I am writing this because since the finals, HF has received more offers of help for the band, and gigs. One manager has offered us help, stating that she has gone over the blog and read my input. Part of the reason she is looking forward to working with HF is because of my “classy” blogging. I am saying this so the bloggers that have been inappropriate will get a clue of how their input is being read.
Dave; You are right! It is the law of attraction!

  25. I think the “off” night was chosen because of the unexpected entertainment “value” esspecially during round one. Also, remember there is no cover for these shows! woo hoo!

As I think about the crowd response formula I am thinking that it is just right as is. I would like to know what the db meter readings are as it happens.

  26. Since attraction is working anyway you might as well attract the good things!
    ;)

  27. I just want to pipe in and say that I appreciate all our fans and by no means do I feel they let us down. When you consider the difference in db’s (1.0 and less difference between bands) it was pretty equal. Patty and Star, you still rock in our book! And that goes for all of our fans.

As far as it being 20% of the total score, while 10% may or may not be better, it’s still better than most talent shows where it’s 100% audience control. For example, I once went to a similar event at the Hard Rock Cafe where the audence mambers voted the winner. They didn’t even have judges. What was even more ludicous was that fans could vote as they entered before even hearing any of the bands. Of course everyone was voting for their friends. Winning a contest like that has no real meaning other than you win the award for bringning in the most money spending patrons to the club than any of the other bands. Winner? Hard Rock Cafe.

Then there’s the ever popular American Idol. While at first the judges control who gets in it eventually changes to total audience control. Remember Sanjia? At least this event had high quality bands winning all throughout.

On a personal note, I was thrilled to see that Jaime Valle gave us (MOR) the highest score of any band in the finals. Consideringt the respect I have for him as a musician, that it itself made me feel pretty good. All said, this was still one of the best experiences I’ve ever had as a musician. Not sure if we’ll return next year, but I will definitely be ther as an audience member.

  28. And now just a small response to the 50 plus lady who sounds like she was very angry that her favorite band didn’t come in 2nd place. So she can “rock to the heavy crap with anyone 30 yrs. her junior”, problem is, that there are not too many of those juniors rocking out with 50 year olds because they have moved on to new and different styles of music. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the 70’s music too ,that was my era, I’m in my 50’s also, but I didn’t get stuck there. I’ve moved on to all kinds of new and different stuff, one of them being ,”Anger is a Gift” you should try it, because all your 30 year old juniors are over here rockin out now. And the comment that “Anger is a gift ” should be returned ,shows what a poor sport . I feel that Anger should have taken 1st place and i’m not mad and knocking DU because they got it. I also thought your band MOR were very good. I really enjoyed them. So don’t be so angry, it was a contest to have fun. I know I did.

  29. Since you brought it up…
I looked over the scoring criteria from the intro blog when the contest started because I was a competitor. Our strategy was to try to get the biggest score from each category within the realm of what we already do.

The max score is 100 from each judge with 10 of those points coming from the db meter. That makes the db meter 10% of the total score.

Additionally, the judges have 10% where they can subjectively judge the crowd response during the set (not the cheering afterward) and elsewhere they can score 10% for the band’s efforts at interaction with the crowd.

  30. You make good points Ed. It just seems to be a bit like a flip of the coin since if the guy holding the meter went 1/4″ in one direction or the other the results could be different. Maybe next time they could use a tripod or something as was suggested a couple of weeks ago. Just a suggestion.

As Sergio said, the rules for this contest are way better then any other I’ve been involved with before. Many times they’re based solely on a head count at the door and 0% on talent. One time I broke a bass drum head and none of the other bands would loan me one, so I had to flip it around and play on the front side.

  31. That’s exactly right Dave, and while it still amounts to a total of 20 percent being crowd noise/reaction, the 10 percent “Audience Response” category (where the judges subjectively grade crowd involvement), factors in more than just the fan base since, unless the fans of Anger sat there twiddling their thumbs during the MOR set, would mean that Anger fans helped MOR fans, and vice versa, which I think is a good thing because it’s a testament to how good the band must be to reel in the reaction of other band’s fans.

Basically, the things i’m looking for in the “audience response” category is stuff like, who’s rocking out in the crowd, whose smiling, and chair dancing and head bopping. How many people are on the dance floor, what is the applause like after each song, and basically, how well the band “captivates” the room.

Tom, we’re totally gonna upgrade/improve our db testing next year, including a stable, consistent reading method, probably with tripod. Good advice.

  32. I guess I wasn’t even aware of the subjective part of the crowd response, so I am guilty of slitting my own throat :-) I was up front for AIAG and doing some table dancing during DU. But that’s ok, thumb twiddling wouldn’t have been as much fun.

  33. Ed: I have a suggestion for the 4th place band in the Finals; give them all dinner vouchers for any of the restaurants at Viejas, gift certificates to any of the outlet stores there, or free tickets to any of the big shows at Viejas. I’m sure the marketing people at Viejas would love this idea since it brings people back up there. I had an awesome steak at The Grove on one of the Sundays during the competition. Yummy! Flash/MOR

  34. great idea Flash – hope they run with it.

  35. shaaron, I don’t think I insulted your band, only you. I cracked a joke about your age, but geeze, you poke fun at yourselves being named haute flash. You keep trying to bait me into arguments so sometimes I give you what you ask for. I can hardly help myself when you claim to be classy. Classy people don’t feel the need to compliment themselves all the time. This contest is done and so am I.

  36. hmmm…
    first was a Non-tribute band
    second was a tribute band

  37. First off no name calling here…I just responding to a comment made about me…and the “Have a Nice Day” comment was said with the upmost sincerity…

I am not “very angry” or even mad that MOR did not win or even take 2nd ..disappointed…Yes, but mad ..NO. All the bands were at the top of their game….as the voting showed

Blogs are about expressing one’s opinions and I did just that by saying what I did about AIAG….I did not get on anyone’s case for not liking MOR…OH wait …checking back in this blog …I think everyone did like them……

Frankly I will continue to go see MOR on a regular basis, I have been to a DU show at Humphrey’s and danced all night…and as for Alice I hope to see your show again soon…it was great!

Bottom line is there votes are cast…and the winners are who they are….To be honest…I felt the judges had a very difficult decision….I give them props for the long road it took to get to last Sunday night..

Thanks to the comments made by Patti, Sergio and Tom…so appreciated……

Said it before ….STAR is holding up her hands and Singing “We are the World”….PEACE OUT

  38. John Marquez Says:

    This is a true saying.

Anyone who loves Rage Against The Machine, and had the opportunity to experience Anger is a Gift at UMC, would say, Thanks for a great night of entertainment. A real R.A.T.M. tribute band.

Anger is a Gift gave you it’s ALL!

So, to all our fans, Thanks for all your support!

    The Marquez Family

  39. M~Bentley Says:

    again….

    ….AIAG….

    –SD Show– SOON!!!

    please & thank u.

    ;)

  40. Just a quick thanks to all my fans you were great. DU AIGE and MOR You all are top knotch bands And yes i do plan on comming and seeing you all play again. I want to thank all the judges. I know it was tough to pick. and place each band. There was a lot of great talent. MONSTERS OF ROCK. In my mind.. You Guys took First place. Not to put the others down Because ypu were all equally great. As of Alice and the Cooper Gang and my stage crew. We took a Gamble and lost. But I couldnt have been more proud of my band and crew that night. Thank you Veijas WE Will Be Back… Love you all..

  41. Where are the hardcores? Shaaron? Colleen? Patti? Dave? Nancy? Dickie? the rest? I feel so sad and lonely, “sad and lonely, won’t some sweet mama, come and take a chance with me … cuz I ain’t so bad. . .

    bozy, bozy, bop – siby-bop!”

  42. monster drummer Says:

Hey there Bruce baby, as one of your crew I have to say I had a blast cutting your head off! Ha! I think I had the best job there that night, I got to drop the blade on Mr. Alice himself! Dude, you did your best and from the looks of all the scores we were doomed from the begining, no one voted for us! I guess there’s only so much Alice Cooper anyone can take at a time or something. We put on really the only theatric rock show that night. All the others played their asses off same as us but really didn’t have a show per say! I guess it was more about the music than a show and Alice Cooper music a select style. Maybe next year huh?

  43. monster drummer Says:

Well Ed, since it’s a done deal now and soon this blog will trickle to a halt since there just isn’t anything to talk about, I think they may have moved on. How long do they keep this blog going after the end of the contest anyway? Would they ever have some kind of compition for original bands and their music? And I agree that if your going to 4 bands battle at the end of the UMC there should have been some kind of prize for the last place band. After all, they did make to the end and compete in finals only to walk away with nothing!!! Was a real slap in the face! I thought this long before we ever got to that point too just so you know it’s not cause we lost!

  44. Monster D, respectfully speaking, while I believe a consolation prize would be cool, to call it a slap in the face to get nothing is ridiculous. Somebody has to lose. Indeed, the path to the finals is littered with the bloody twitching bodies of the bands that came to play. And the real slap in the face, if there is any, is not that you didn’t win some sort of steak meal, but that you came in last. Believe me, I highly doubt anybody in that band would’ve felt one iota better about the night knowing, “fuck yeah dudes, we’re going to Sizzler!”

Also, I find it funny – nay, hilarious – that, all through the process, when the judges advanced bands like Alice, and 80z All-Stars, we were criticized for not caring enough about the music and that all a group had to do was put on some funny suits and bring some props and then that groupwould win. Yet now, that Alice DIDN’T win, we’re accused of not caring about theatrics.

    Too funny.

Here’s the deal, While Alice did put on an amazing, theatrical show, and a very good musical performance, with regards to vocals and musicianship, the other bands were better. Not that Alice was bad, but the other were just better. AND the other bands theatrics were pretty damn awesome too. Not as awesome as Alice’s, but awesome enough to put them over the top as a whole.

  45. monster drummer Says:

You crack me up Ed, you get so defensive! I know that other bands lost. . . didn’t make it to the finals, to get nothing there is expected by all! To go all the way to the end and fight like hell, as hard as any and come up empty just hurts a bit, let us cry in our beer will ya! I’m not criticizing you and the other judges for your job at all! I sure wouldn’t have wanted to do it!

It really doesn’t matter anymore anyway, it’s done, it’s over, the fun is up and no more shows and things to write about anyway! So with that and all my thanks to Viejas for the privlage to play there, I sign aff till next year when it all starts up again!

  46. Sir Ed my good man. You know i love you..Well to say that the other bands vocals and musical perfomance were better. I disagree 100% Were a different kind of band and sound then the bands that won. We just lost by human opinon. And like you said Ed there has to be a loser. As far as a consolation prize. It is a casino we gabled and lost and thats that. I went on that stage By myself I may add… And excepeted the fourth place award proudly. And yes the pain of losing cuts deep. So i share my award with all the bands that did not place 1st 2nd or 3rd. In there honor I will be back next yr

  47. Well, hard to argue with that Bruce. Just out of curiosity, what was the gamble you took? I didn’t see any gambling, I saw a great, kickass show

  48. haha, yeah, I crack me up as well Monster D, and yes, I do get defensive sometimes – and my inclination was to defend myself against you defensive remark, but I will resist the temptation.

dum, dum dee, dum – not getting defensive here, la-di-da, nope, no defensiveness …. AHH FUCK IT.

Sure I may be a bit defensive, but I think I’ve earned it after putting up with all your OFFENSIVE asses!

haha, just kidding, you know I love youse.

    cheers.

  49. Ed! Here I am… I’ve been feeling lonely and lost too! In fact, I wrote to Monsters today to say just that. But, I guess, all good things must come to an end… and so we have to just move on. Maybe we’ll see each other at a MONSTERS, HF or DU gig… or maybe we’ll just have to wait until next summer?!

I’ll be reading your articles and enjoying your sense of humor. Thanks for making the blog a really fun place to make new friends and cheer on our favorites :-)

  50. OH, and Bruce AKA Alice. I am not a fan of Alice Cooper, and I’m a HUGE MOR fan, but I have to give you credit for getting up on stage after the winners were announced. That had to have been a bit tough and you handled it with Grace. Good for you.

  51. Although I understand not finishing where you wanted, I say there were still many rewards. I read a press release that stated the DreamCatcher has a capacity of 750 and it looked pretty damn full to me. That combined with the print and online advertising is something of value to any band. The framed awards were a nice memento as well.

  52. OK, so here’s a topic. Since Viejas has a big budget such a nice P.A. system, it would be nice if they offered the performers an in ear monitor system. It eliminates feedback issues and you can actually hear yourself sing. They could still send the same mix. Performers could use their own ear pieces or they could go with the disposable foam type.

  53. Hmm, not so popular I guess. OK, how about boobs and beer?

  54. Go to any 619 show if you wanna see tons of boobs and drink lotsa beer, lol! Oh yeah, didn’t you guys in MOR sit in with them Saturday night? Casey says you guys rocked it! Sorry I missed it!

  55. for the quintessential song about boobs and beer please refer to Frank Zappa’s “Titties and Beer”

    You will not be disappointed.

  56. Sorry to have deserted you Ed, but had to get back to rehearsals for new songs for HF to keep the sets hot. Now that we’re gonna be seein’ ya’ll at the gigs, wanna be ready to rock. And it seemed there was no point in rehashing everyone’s various opinions of Metal vs R&B as that was a no-win situation and the gavel has fallen, and personally I’m happy with the results. Oh yes, and there is life outside Viejas that has been neglected in favor of time to hang out with all of you. And BTW, I’m glad we warmed your cockles ;-) We like to share the Haute Flash experience! I won’t even dare comment on the “Titties and Beer”…..!!!!

  57. What else is there to talk about? MOR sits in with 619. HF sits in with DU and Jump Start, the contest is over, Gilbert has left the blog, and I can’t think of any other ways to compliment myself, promote my band, or celebrate Ed’s birthday. The questions of sound, lights, dynamics, and judging has all be hashed out. It’s after 2 in the morning, and I am still working. Life is good.

  58. B.Battle Says:

    Hi Ed,

I haven’t been on the blog since Mon. but, I have a question. Just food for thought. One of the reason I would like to have seen the individual catogories listed is because, after the semi-finals you wrote in your blog that D.U. “was not at the top of their game, had a suboptimal start, was a little stiff and sloppy, especially vocally, not at all up to par with their previous performance and seemed to be just going through the motions. Also, if D.U. expected to receive a cash prize that they better bring their A game”. For that you awarded D.U. 80.5 points.

In the finals you told D.U. that they had stepped it up and had brought their A game that night and awarded D.U. 85 points, an increase of 4.5 points from the previous week.

Alicia had written in the blog following the semi-finals that “D.U. were considerably weaker than the preliminary round, there were lead vocal issues and if D.U. didn’t bring their A game that they may have trouble beating Alice and the Cooper Gang” (which I thought was a little disrespectful to ACG.). Alicia awarded D.U. with a score of 87.5.

During the awards ceremony Alicia told D.U. that they had stepped it up and had done everything they had been told that they needed to do in order to win this contest and had brought their A game. For this performance Alicia awarded D.U. 86 points a decrease of 1.5 points less then they had received, when in her words, had a sub par performance.

I was just wondering in which catogory D.U. LOST 1.5 points in after having a superior performance in the Finals. If Alicia had given D.U. just 1 more additional point for their improvement over the previous week that would have given them an 88.5 which would have made them the winners on both the judges total score and crowd response. I’m just saying.

I’m not over looking the fact that Alicia picked D.U. to finish first in the semi’s and tied for first in the finals and also the fact that Ed and Alicia did have some positive thing to say about D.U. in the semi’s.

I not sure I understand how a group can have a superior performance and lose points given by the same person.

Alicia, all of your comments and criticism was appreicated and taken to heart by the members of D.U., just need to know what areas D.U. dropped off , in your opinion, so that we may use that info. to continue to improve.

    Thanks in advance, be well……………..B.

  59. Ed, as suggested I sought out the Zappa tune. That guy was truly unique. I wish I could have seen him play live. I saw Dweezil one at the Belly Up. It was a great blend of musicianship and comedy. He tore it up on everything from the jingle for Juicy Fruit gum to t.v. theme songs.

  60. I know Ed’s busy but I’m just twiddling my thumbs so…
Each judge has their own criteria for judging. What does an 8 mean out of a possible 10, for example.
This “self imposed” bench mark might change as each band performs. Ed has said that he doesn’t give 10s. So he gives band number one a 9.5 on something then band number two nails it he has to score it relative to band one.
Each night of competition is scored independant of the other nights so it is possible to get a lower score for a superior performance.

  61. How can you get a lower score, for a more superior performance??? Sorry, that does not make logical sense!!??

  62. between nights…
esspecially if there are different judges on each night.

  63. Dave,

    I don’t understand either.

First of all I’m not refering to just any judge or a different judge. My reference is to one paticular judge.

My job requires me to evaluate many people. By what is written in my evaluation will be one of the reason a person may or may not move up in the organization. Therefore my criteria must remain stable through out the year in order to be fair to everyone because if it floated from day to day it’s possible for me to rate a less skilled person higher and they may advance when some one else was more deserving.

Also there are times when I’m ask to rate several people more than once throughout a year, if my judgement in how I rate them is floating from day to day I could actually give them a higher rating on a day when they had a worse performance or visa versa.

We grade on a scale from 1 to 7 in each catogory with 1 being the highest mark and 7 the lowest. Any mark below a 4 will require an explanation.

For the reasons that are listed above I feel that the standards on which you judge should remain consistant throughout.

Any sports coach will tell you that the most important thing that they want from the officials is consistancy, not that one crew will call their game one way and then the next weak a different crew would put emphasis on something different, for not knowing what an evaluator/jugde/official is looking for makes it hard to plan and improve.

  64. This isn’t a job where you are rating someone’s performance over time. Your sports analogy is a better one. Each night of the contest is like a game. You collect points and if you have the most that night you win. Next night, just like the next game you start a zero and nothing you did before that matters except the win.
Brett Favre might have a bad day and still win the game… or a great day and still lose the game.
In sports you get points for very specific things, in this contest you get rated, subjectively within certain guidelines. If you win you move on and those points go out the window.

  65. Now the verbal critique is completely different. You might get raked over the coals by the judge but get favorable scores.

That’s because the judges comments are their opportunity to suggest improvements which means they are going to bring up your weaknesses.

  66. Dave,

It would be like being an umpire and saying today this is my strike zone but, since tomorrow is the championship game I think I’ll use my championship game strike zone but, I won’t tell the pitcher or the batter they’ll just have to figure it out as they go.

  67. oh, btw, in my sports analogy earlier, the refs don’t award points so you can’t really compare the UMC judges to a sports ref.

  68. In baseball you don’t get more points for stealing home as opposed to hitting a home run and walking across the plate.
In this contest you get a far better score for stealing home!

  69. Dave,

I agree with what you just wrote but, don’t you think if a particular judge tell you you need to improve in these areas and in front of a full house state that you did everything asked of you, that you would be rewarded with a higher score than the previous one like Ed did. Not a score 1.5 less before you made the improvements.

  70. In the baseball reference I was refering to consistancy in how you call a game in each game. not having a floarting zone.

  71. A better sports analogy would be gymnastics. The lovely Mary competed in gymnastics in high school and she will tell you that the first competitor has it tough because the judges do set the bar for the competitors after that.
btw, in the second to last photo in Ed’s post above, l to r Me, Shaaron from Haute Flash and the lovely Mary!

  72. Well Dave,

    you and I just agree to disgreed on this one. It’s part of what I do for a living and a 7 is a 7, a 6 is a 6 and a 5 is a 5, each and every day I evaluate.

  73. You said… “if a particular judge tell you you need to improve in these areas and state that you did everything asked of you, that you would be rewarded with a higher score than the previous one. Not a score 1.5 less before you made the improvements.”

That’s because the finals score has nothing to do with the semi final score. There is no relation between nights, even from the same judge. This is because the judging is done on a bell curve created and modified during the night of the show. According to each judges brain.

  74. Another way to put it…
What is a 7 on your keys compared to a 7 on Alice’s coffin?
What is a 5 on Rano’s sax compared to a 5 on MOR’s duo leads?

  75. oh I’m sorry, I didn’t read that in rules about the bell curve part.

  76. But I guess you know every that Alicia thinks since this question was posed to her, not you.

  77. so maybe you can tell me why she gave d.u. less points since you know hers and every judges thoughts and in which catogories

  78. I am speculating on what judges might go through in scoring a contest like this.

It is the concept of making a subjective decision… choosing the number between 1 and 10. Being consistent in your judgment but logical too.

If you say a performance was definitely a 7, not an 8 and not a 6. Then the second band does better but still not up to your “8″ standards what do you do?
You want to score a 7 but you want to acknowledge that they did better. 7.5 maybe?

That is the nature of this kind of contest. Just like gymnastics, beauty contests, photo contests, figure skating, x games…

  79. B.Battle Says:

    Hey Dave,

I’m sorry for the mis spelled words, I was trying to work and blog at the same time earlier.

As to your example comparing my keys to Alice coffin and Rano’s sax to MOR’s dual leads, that irrelavant to what I’m saying here.

I’ve competed in many of these types of competiion in the past and won most of them and Jaime V. can vouch for me on this for I’ve known him since I was 14yrs. when he was working at Apex as a salesperson on 7th and Broadway downtown S.D.

Soul Patrol ( 2 x Champions, San Diego and Los Angeles)

High Voltage (1 x Champion, San Diego)

And what I’m saying in these types of competitions after you leave the first round the judges most of the time, but not all of the time, will no longer grade you against your competition but instead your last performance. Think of how the critiques went with each band, it went something like: last time you guys had more energy or last time you did this better or this time you guys really nailed it and so on…..

You don’t hear: Mor’s singer is better than yours or A.I.A.G guitar player’s solo was better than yours or that Alice stage show was better than yours………. They compare you against you and your last performance much like American Idol judges do.

With all that being said I would expect a score increase if a judge admit that our performance improved and not a decrease since I’m being graded against my last performance anyway. Maybe you wouldn’t but, I would.

    Be Blessed my friend

  80. blah blah blah blah blah…. what does it matter? DU won the whole thing anyway, so what if they were scored lower when they had a better performance… they STILL WON! Jeez, we are really reaching here folks for something to criticize. Just let it go, take the cash and go on a vacation!

  81. Well said B,
    on another related note…
if you go back in the blog you’ll notice that the scores aren’t mentioned. Ed only started to post some of them to point out that we spectators don’t really know what’s going on in their heads especially when you try to reconcile the judges comments with the results. Then there was the db meter controversy with 6ONE9 and how that might push someone over the top.
My guess is that we won’t see much about the actual scores anymore to avoid things like the call Joseph got after it was over.
…but it’s not really over, Patti, Next year is coming and there will be some changes based on what’s been said here in the blog. maybe

  82. Johnny Marquez Says:

To the Head honcho black suited dreamcatcher manager, I forgot the name but I will get our shirt to you stat, and thanks also to the bartender dudes for all the supports as well and to keeping our fans very happy throughout the weeks. Jack FM / Monster Energy Drinks / WildTurkey(those black boy beaters you gave out to our friends made my tongue drop when the girls put them on WOW! Pics will be posted shortly Guitar Hero and Kalua. Sorry to some and a big relief to many, we respectfully resign as 2nd placers in the UMC. We we’re just dishonored & very disappointed by the pulling of the prize contracts mid competition with no email informing us of changes but just blogged out on this site. We understand the situation and reasons why, we just feel taking back a huge incentive as this for lack of being casino friendly should perhaps be compensated to all the winners.

    Lates…
    Johnny

  83. Thank you Johnny Marquez. I thought you guys were flawless whereas we had a miscue and a broken bass string. I would have ranked you #1.

Let me know if you need anything on my end as far as assistance in hooking up a show in SD.

  84. B.Battle Says:

Thank you Johnny M. for the kind words. Again that just proves the kind of classy person that you are. I have no doubt that A.I.A.G. will be successful where ever they choose to perform, that is proven by the response that has been written in this blog as well as the crowd reponse for an out of town band. My only regret is that I never had a chance to see your show because we always followed your group in the competition and when you were on stage performing we were back stage preparing for our show.

Sergio, it was great getting a chance to meet you. I hope we have the opportunity to cross paths again someday, thank you for the kind words following the presentation of the awards, it really means a lot to me coming from such a talented musician as yourself. I enjoyed meeting your fellow guitarist whose name escapes me at the moment another great person and musician and your lead vocalist, I believe his name is Ron, please forgive me if I’m wrong, as I told him to his face the night of the finals,”I’ve been doing these things for a very long time and your the best rock vocalist I’ve ever heard to date”, not to mention they don’t come any nicer then him. To Tom and the bassman I really didn’t get a chance to speak with either one of you gentlemen much during the competition but if the old saying of birds of a feather flocks together is true, then you 2 are just as classy as the rest. Although I will say to Tom, way to step it up and represent on those drums after being called out on the blog. M.O.R., I’m not a metal person per say but, I do recognize talent and quality when I heard it regardless of the style of music. I must say that God has given your group more than it’s fair share of talent, that’s why there’s not that much left over for the rest of us to divide up amongst ourselves. Great job and Gods Blessings.

Alice, I’ve already given you your props earlier but it was a pleasure meeting you.

Casey, I always give you and your crew big thanks after every performance there, individually, but I thought I would add this public one also, great job.

Hey Danielle, please accept my apologies for not mentioning you with the other judges in my earlier blog (my bad), my mind at that time was on the night of the finals. Thank you for your words of wisdom which helped us prepare for the finals.

And last but not least, to everyone that attended these competitions through out, thank you for the investment of your time and money to come and support your favorite group or just listen to no one in particular, you made this contest what is was.

So to everyone involved in whatever capacity……..Gods Love Onto You.

    B.

  85. B. That was a very nice entry! There are so many of the players in this contest that have showed class and friendship. It has been a pleasure to meet all of you. And, although HF didn’t make it past the first round, we have enjoyed being part of it all. I feel we were “part of it all” only because of the acceptance and kind words from all the bands, judges and fans.

Again, I would like to remind everybody about the event at Humphries on Sept. 9, to benefit the lead singer of DU. Please come out and support our friend and fellow musician. The event is called “Band Together For David”.

  86. B.Battle, thanks for the props. I won’t be able to make it on the 9th, but I live in Alpine, so maybe I’ll see you at Viejas some time. I hope the fund raiser is a big success.

  87. Well, I guess it wouldn’t hurt for me to put in one shameless plug for my band to anyone still hanging around on this blog. We’ll be at House of Blues San Diego Sat, Aug 30, 2008 07:30 PM. We’ll be playing a Neil Young tribute “Neil Deal” and ZZ Top tribute LA Grange. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster at this link http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0A0040F5E0511A3B?artistid=1240749&majorcatid=10001&minorcatid=1

  88. Tom, since there are 3 bands how long of a set are you guys playing and what time do you go on?

  89. Ed … sorry I have not been around, but working has taken up most my time. Off vacation now and have to earn the $$ to be able to go out to see all the new bands I’ve grown to love… HF, MOR, DU, 80z… I hope to see all of the new bands when my bank account recovers.

Congrats to DU and AIAG and MOR and Alice for creating an AWESOME evening last Sunday. Although I’d liked to have seen MOR come in higher, it is what it is!! Sergio… it was great talking to you Sunday. We will talk more later.

GOOD MOJO!… You will always be my #1 band!! You guys still rock!!

And lastly, Ed… what can I say about you? You are one of the most interesting, outragous, exacerbating, funny, maddening, gentle, crude, lovable, frustrating men I have every known!! How your wife, W puts up with you I’ll never know. She is a saint!! You know I love you though!! Hope to see you around town. Stay in touch.

    Peace to all!!

  90. LHC, Doors open at 7:30. Shows starts at 8:00. We are first up and will do a 45 minute set. We will try to tailor our set to be a good fit with the other acts.

  91. NoMo MoJo Says:

You can all say and talk about the Alice Cooper band like you want now, those guys will not look back at this site cause the shows over and they lost! I can tell by the way that no one ever mentions them as good or liking them that they were doomed from the start!

  92. Um, don’t quite know what you’re talking about Mojo, a lot of people (myself included) talked about how great they were, AND Alice and others in the band have returned here to say hi and shoot the shit.

Colleen, now that you have said that about me, I realize, my work here is done. By the way, a lot, if not all, of the adjectives you used to describe me I believe also describe you.

    It was a blast girl!

  93. Oh! No! Ed? You can’t say bye-bye! what would we be without you? Your flock would be lost, your children stray, and blog would be rampant with misguided souls lost in the night.

BTW Are you planning on covering the “Banding Together For David” event? (Sept 9, 6:00 at Humphries to benefit DU’s lead singer.)

  94. I told Evonne I would help plug the benefit on the various blogs I write for, plus try to get it in the CityBeat NightGeist pages. Sadly, I will not be able to attend as I will be in NY that week. I’m kinda bummed about that.

  95. I forgot to add something very important!! Thank you, thank you Viejas!

All of you should know that only did Viejas give us an AWESOME summer of Sundays, but they also are sincere in their desire to help out community. You see… last October, my school district lost one of it’s Preschools in the Harris fire. It was one of three in our district, but the first one that I, as it’s director, had built up from nothing. Following 16 years of work, we lost all of it in a moment’s time.

We worked hard to recover from the ashes and wanted to honor our tiny maintenance crew and others for all their hard work in our recovery. We had planned a party at a restaurant in El Cajon, but because it is an outdoor venue, we were rained out twice. Someone mentioned to try Viejas. Well…. long story short… when Viejas heard of all the misfortune we had been through, they offered the Dream Catcher room to us with the rental cost waived. We already had the donation of live music from Good Mojo, and now the donation of a beautiful room in which to have our recovery celebration!!

We are still in the rebuilding process, but thanks to an evening of good music, beautiful ambiance, great service from servers and bartenders on one night in February we were able to move forward knowing that people in San Diego county do care.

So THANK YOU, THANK YOU Viejas for providing a summer of wonderful music and for showing my school district that you do truly care about neighbors and community!!

  96. Hey Colleen, I was aware of that fundraiser you did in the DreamCatcher! It was a very good cause, and the Viejas team rose to the occasion!

Ed, so sorry you will be in NY for the fundraiser. Celebrating another birthday? LOL Say “hi” to the Mother.

  97. Finally getting to my e-mail after a week on vacation. I appreciate all the great and positive comments regarding the show. I think I can speak for the rest of the band (if not, they will certainly let me know at next practice ) when I say that we are stoked just to have reached the finals. While a higher place finish would have been great, I really feel the judging on finals night reflected the performances. I know we had some burps and farts as a band, not the least of which was my broken D string on Detroit Rock City ( where a bass player can least affored it ), but felt we overcame them all reasonably well. All the other bands really had perfect, or close to it, performances, and to that I must defer. DU, Anger…, Alice… Y’all were fabulous! My only suggestion for next year-give the 4th place band a $1000! I mean c’mon, making it to the finals at UMC!!!??? Alice, you were worthy! Here’s wishing all the bands, their fans(especially ours), and the judges ( who took 10 truckloads of shit in the process ), and Viejas, for the chance to compete and good times.

  98. Dave — I agree… the 4th place band should get something. $1,000 sounds fair. And yes… in my opinion MOR should have placed higher. But I must admit that I’m sure glad I wasn’t sitting those judeges chairs! For me, it might have been a four way tie for first!!

  99. Here’s a new twist on the prize issue.
Viejas pulled the prize of gigs after the contest started. Why don’t they add a prize to ACG now?
Or have the $32K split up according to points?
Or have a tie of first, and split $28K…
The possibilities are endless, and we could really make Jason, Joe and the Viejas accountants lose sleep!

  100. With all due respect, you know what you guys sound like to me? You sound like those people, parents usually, and school board members, who remove games like Dodgeball from the schools and replace them with games where there are no losers. They don’t want the kids feelings to be hurt and in doing so, never teach them a reality about life, in order for there to be a winner, there must be a loser.

The fact that somebody gets nothing on the night of the finals is part of what makes it so exciting – not just for the audience, but for the band members too. Also, the adrenaline of knowing you could be the one who walks away with nothing, makes you work that much harder at not losing. Nah, I would not support any consolation prize for the loser beyond a free steak and martini at the restaurant.

  101. of course, I have no say in such matters

  102. HELLO!
    …hello… hello… hello…
    ECHO!
    …echo… echo… echo…
    :::that’s kinda neat:::
    …neat… neat… neat…

  103. So sad… I miss all you guys! I must have no life :-(

  104. “check, check, microphone check one… two… is this thing on?”

  105. :::Squealing feedback:::Mic ruffling:

Okay since no one is listening anymore:

Here’s some cover/tribute bands I’d like to see compete next year in no particular order:

    Alan Iglesias and Crossfire

    The Spazmatics (LA)

    ThundHERStruck

    Stalker Dan Band

Darrell Fields and the Purple Haze Experience

    And MöR!

  106. Hey LHC!! I’m listening!! I ALWAYS listen!! :-)

Ed! “…with all due respect…” Ahhhhh it’s so nice to see you say you respect us! You’ve come far since Week one little grasshopper!!

  107. Hey… I agree with LHC! Crossfire is a great band, so is OU812 (Van Halen Tribute). The Cured is always great. Hmmm…. if we work at it, next year could really blow the roof off.

Oh, and Monsters of Rock will obviously be back for seconds. And 619 too!

  108. Dont count us out… WE WILL BE BACK

  109. NoMo MoJo Says:

Yeah Ed, the PA is on but the sound guy can’t make ajustments cause they do a passive mix!!!

  110. Thank you! Thank you! :::sniff:::

    yes… please, I’d like to speak now…

um, I’d like to thank my manager. Ed you know I love you… like a cowboy loves his horse.

    Quiet please, quiet… Thank you!
ok, um… yes, Thank you! Quiet please…

I’d like to thank my mom, Colleen. You taught me everything I know. You’ve taught us ALL so much. :::sniff::: how could we have done it without you! Let’s hear it for Colleen! Come on everybody! …anybody? oh, yes you over there thank you so much for acknowleging her wonderful influence!

And lastly, I’d like to thank Casey the stage manager for saving our drummer when he touched that frayed extension chord. :::Man, I told you to get rid of that thing!:::

We love you Viejas! Thank you! Good Night!

  111. Dickie — you’re welcome! :-) The great thing about you Dickie (with two “i”s) is that you have always been unpredictable for what you are going to say.
    Peace!

  112. NoMo MoJo Says:

Looks like the curtain has dropped and the lights have dimmed and all the actors have left for home. Soon all the glitter will be gone andall that’s left is just a memory! Yet time keeps ticking and moving us on, before we all know it, the show will go on! Another Ultimate Music Challenge will soon be upon us, the cheers and the fans and your judges all gather! So until that time my friends polish your chops and build your all your props and get yourselves in order, cause next year I believe will be the show of shows and on genius it should border!!!

  113. I come to the blog every day. I see nothing new. It’s so sad. Now I just look at the number of entries on the main page, and see if there is anything new. There has to be some kind of conspiring going on for the next big theory. How about, “All The Bands Are Too Busy Practicing, To Bother With The Blog Conspiracy Theory”

Or, “Gilbert Is Gone So Why Bother, Conspiracy Theory”

    OK, I’ll shut up.

  114. Don’t fret my children – the blog is hibernating right now, snoozing in his cave, waiting to be awakened next summer when he can come out with a roar, tearing and snapping our flesh with his razor claws and mighty jaws. And then we’ll all be wishing that the grizzly blog would go back to sleep, that the bear is too mean and eats people for lunch.

Ahh yes, I’m certain the Grizzly Blog is coming back. Just be careful what you wish for.

    General Decker
    Bear Hunter

  115. Hey! Did you hear about the gay incestuous bear?

He layed his paw on the table.

    :::works better spoken:::

  116. Goodbye blog … hibernate soundly. For next summer we will awaken your slumber and will be ready to “ROCK YOUR SOUL” and free your MONSTERS that ALICE had pent up with ANGER in the UNDERGROUND of the CULT!

To all my fellow bloggers… remember this… Anger is a gift, but PEACE is a treasure!

You know I love you!! Especially you… “The Mother”!

    Bye.

  117. Haute Flash will be at the Galley at the Marina in Chula Vista this Saturday evening. 6 to 10 It’s best to call for reservations (619) 427-5714

Good food, beautiful surroundings, great spirits, and the music!

Then we can all blog on Sunday! See you there!

  118. FYI, if any bands need a blog of their own I do that kind of thing – for a fee of course. There are free ones available with limitations.

  119. NoMo MoJo Says:

    Jokes huh, love it!
Did you hear about the Gay whale? Yeah, he bit the back off a submarine and sucked all the seamen out!!!

    Ba Da Boom!! Crash!!!!!

  120. Q: Do you know what the definition of Endless Love is?

A: Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles playing tennis

  121. NoMo MoJo Says:

Do ya know what’s tinnier than a tiny whinny flea???

His tiny Wiennie!!!! ( hope I got the spelling right!!)

  122. Did ya hear the one about the endless blog…

    me neither.

  123. Two guys were sitting at the end of a bar. One guys says,”I aint to smart. But I wouldn’t care if you wanted to talk”. The other guy says, “Gee, I have a hard time talking too because I’m stupid too” Then the first guy says, “Gee, that’s cool. Whatta ya wanna talk about?” and the second guys says,
“What kind of strings do you use?”

You can sub sticks for strings, if you’re talking to a drummer.

  124. What did the Dead Head say when he sobered up?

    hey! this band sucks…

  125. What is perfect pitch?
It’s when you throw the accordian into the dumpster and it breaks the banjo, and the trombone player jumps in after them and breaks his jaw.

  126. OK. When did a Dead Head ever sober up?

  127. How many Parrotheads (Deadheads) does it take to change a lightbulb?
Only one, to hold the bulb . The others just drink until the room spins.

  128. How do you know if a singer is at the front door?

    He can’t find his key.

  129. How many guitar players does it take to cover a Stevie Ray Vaughn tune?

    Evidently all of them.

  130. How do you know there is a girls singer at the front door?
She won’t stop knocking, and doesn’t know when to come in.

How many girl singers does it take to sing “Crazy”?
    Apparently, all of them

What do you call a musician that just broke up with his girlfriend?
    Homeless.

What’s the last thing a drummer says before he is kicked out of the band?
“Wanna do some of my stuff?”

  131. What do you do if your bassist is drowning?
    Throw her the amp.

  132. I personalized that one for you!
    :)

  133. Don’t forget, I know who you are!

  134. NoMo MoJo Says:

Did you know musicians never die. . . .they just decompsoe!

  135. the annoying bloger Says:

what did the lead guitarist say to the rest of the band? TURN DOWN! i’m starting to hear you!

  136. NoMo MoJo Says:

That’s better than what they really do. . . . . .turn up till they sound like 619!!!

  137. Now would be good time to discuss “dynamics” in terms of volume.

  138. Dynamics is the juxtaposition, in musical terms, of the relationship between elements of one instrument to another, determining which element has a position favorable over another.
The variables of elements, including, but are not limited to, instruments, sound, tone, volume, intensity, ability, mood, color, humidity, and temperature, and time of day.

  139. NoMo MoJo Says:

I’m dizzy, my head is spinning, like a wirlpool it nevers ends!!! I’m so dizzy cause that’s too much in-for-ma-tion. . . my little brain just can’t comp-pre-hend!!! (sing to the tune of Dizzy)

  140. You spin me right ‘roun baby…

With all due respect, you’ve decribed balance (within an ensemble), not dynamics.

  141. OK, you try and explain it!
I just know that when I come to my instrument in a good mood, and I’m not suffering from this stupid heat and humidity, and the band is having fun, the dynamics are better.
    Yes, dynamics are balance too.
    Dynamics are everything!
That’s why when we were talking about dynamics in a previous blog we exploded into different explanations!
That’s why dynamics are so important!
    I think it’s the magic!

  142. In music, dynamics has a specific definition, it refers to the volume of the notes and how that is notated in a piece. example, piano=soft and forte=loud, also crecendos, accents, Sfortzando etc.

Sometimes included under the heading of dynamics are other aspects of musical expression such as the duration of a note (legato or staccato) or a slight change of tempo at a crucial turn around or retarding at the end of a piece.

To say a group has good dynamics is to say that each musician knows dynamics AND has good ensemble skills. Plus they are on the same page dynamically either because they have superior intuitions or they practiced a lot.

    look up musical dynamics

  143. the annoying bloger Says:

it’s you girl[shaaron]making it spin, your making us dizzy. just kidding sharron. i could be wrong but i believe it’s the variation, and contrast in force or intensity that has been written in the music by the composer. but all musicians know we like to play around abit with the dynamics at time’s. the key is if it’s not written that way everyone must feel it and go with it kind of like adlibbing is to actors. the annoying bloger thinks this blog is starting to lose it’s dynamics? hee hee!!!

  144. the annoying bloger Says:

thank’s dickie now my blog is really annoying! maybe i should have spent less time trying to write something witty and re-read my music theory book’s? but thank’s at last an intelligent answer

  145. See, the blog is moving again.
In the other blog I defined dynamics as a tool for advanced players, (only to tweak everybody) and it was about volume and letting the lead instrument and vocals be heard. We seem to be on that track again. Jaime said it was like sex. It can also be as simple as manors. Like a musical conversation! But the sexual explanation really does work; You start small, work it up, have a climax, then cuddle it to sleep. Sort of. Almost like a lead instrument solo. If the player is good, yeah, like sex.
Hey, Ed, is that why you think women don’t rock? Because they are supposed to be played, not play?

  146. Women can’t rock because they lack the RLF chromosome (Rock Like F__k). It’s not their fault really, and so women should not feel inferior about it, especially since they have more than their fair share of the DML (Do My Laundry) chromosomes, and the MMD (Make My Dinner) chromosomes and also, the all important FMB and FMFB (Fetch My Beer and Fetch My Friend a Beer) chromosomes

  147. Ed, I don’t have any of those chromosomes. My husband does all the cooking, the kids do the laundry, and I, remember, put a fridge in the garage so he can get his own beer. (I supervise the housekeeper, shop, and decorate).
AND, YOU said, “…women don’t rock, with an exception of Haute Flash…”
BTW, where were you at our gig last Sat? Celebrating another birthday?
    We missed you.

  148. I don’t have chromosomes

  149. actually I do but there out getting re chromed.

  150. So, Dicky, exactly how many chromosomes are you missing at this particular time? LOL love ya buddy!

  151. sorry AA, couldn’t make it. So many birthdays, so little time. But please, keep me in the loop on your gigs. (Am I on the HF mailing list?)

  152. Ed; HF doesn’t have a mailing list yet. But our web sites have info.www.Hauteflash.biz and http://www.hauteflash.net
We will get the annoying mailing spam going soon.
Gee, Sundays are so empty, boring and sad.

  153. Speaking of Birthdays….

Happy Birthday to Mr. Philip Lynott who would have been 59 today.

  154. the annoying bloger Says:

as annoying a bloger as i am i’m even more annoying because i’m also a female! yes us lady’s can rock “but” if your talking lead guitar! not yet! maybe a couple chick’s? but even most of the good one’s are not playing leads they wrote themselves. i’ve played with a few crappy lead guitarist that if they were women they would be stars! as vocalist there are alot of women that rock but they still are far and few between when it comes to the men. and let’s talk drum’s! OH PLEASE GIRLFRIEND! shelia E is’nt a drummer. it’s just evolution. us lady’s can listen, and feel it just like a man but we still have not allowed ourselves to fully let go of our inhibitions and evolve to the level of men when it comes to rock! let’s be honest just because we can name sixty girl’s who can REALLY ROCK think of the million’s of men that can!!!

  155. Hey Annoying Blogger.
I have been playing in bands for most of my life. I have worked with some really rockin’ lead guitar players that are female. I personally feel that the problem is this; Women are the one who have the babies, and babies need to be cared for. There is not enough money to raise children and be in a band. Those of us who have not had the financial responsibility of children have done well. Bonnie Raitt, my friend, Rosie Flores, Jennifer Batton, The ShredMistress, But in todays economy, women have to work, and there just isn’t enough time to be in a band too!

Until there are equal wages for equal work this will be a problem. Until men don’t have to be taken to court to support the babies they make, this will be a problem. I know. I am a foster parent, and I see this side of life on a daily basis.

Yes, this is all connected. Women are still fighting for the right of equality. When we are truly equal, there will be more women rockers.

  156. NoMo MoJo Says:

Man hater Shaaron. . . go away!!! There are a lot of single fathers out there taking care of their kids cause the women split!!!! Your using an age old bitch and your beating a dead horse to dog food!!! Yes women can rock, all that other stuff you said has nothing to do with it. There are phisical differences in us weather you want to admit it or not!

  157. NoMoMoJo,
I am not a man hater. And yes, there are lots of fathers who are wonderful. But wake up and smell the coffee, I am a foster parent, and I have a degree in Social Work. I know what I am talking about.
I have also played in all female bands since the 60s. I have lost many good players because they either get knocked up, or are having financial problems trying to support a family. It’s just a reality.
Thank you for admitting that women can rock, but any physical difference between the genders has nothing to do with rocking! Whether I go away or not, the problem will still be here. If there are any men out there that work full time, and still have time and energy to be in a band, while being a full time single parent, they would be the exception. It would be possible with the help of a nanny, but most women don’t make that kind of money! Child care is very expensive. Follow the dollar, NoMoMoJo.

  158. NoMo MoJo Says:

OK, OK ,OK men are shit and women rule!!!! How does that make you feel? Men are worthless sperm donors and we’re here to piss women weather we could help it or not! You talk like women are perfect and men or crap all the time!!!

And yes women can rock just as hard as any man! Rock history is filled with some of the greatest of rockers and they were women! I don’t think there has been a blog on here yet that ever said women couldn’t rock written by a man yet you keep bringing that up! Ya got a complex or something?

  159. Once again, it seems i must put on my judge’s robe and settle this dispute between Shaaron and NoMojo.

Bottom line is this. Shaaron makes a good point, that more women would probably rock if they didn’t have the yunguns to look after and whatnot. But that don’t count for, as Annoying Blogger said, the existence of millions and millions of male rockers vs. female rockers, which are probably in the thousands.

In fact, Shaaron kind of proves the point by saying that men, by their nature, are less likely to nurture and more likely to EMBRACE THE ROCK, thus making them inherently more suitable to ROCK LIKE F__K.

However, NoMojo must come to terms with the fact that, sure, there are a few deadbeat moms out there, but by and large it is men who skip on their responsibilities when it comes to seed-depositing and child-rearing.

We must acknowledge the good and the bad about our genders and, when it comes right down to it, it is far more righteous to raise healthy children then it is to ROCK LIKE F__K.

Especially when we realize, it’s largely been women who have raised this generation’s rockers in the first place, making women more even more essential to ROCKING LIKE F__K than men.

    Out.

  160. NoMo MoJo Says:

OK Ed, here’s a question for you. . . women do raise the men of the world, right? I would agree and I think all the women would agree for the most part. OK, here is my question, if most all women are given the credit of raising the men of the world, why do they not do whatever it takes to make us what they really want while we are just pieces of clay in their hands to be molded? Instead, they tell little boys ” Little boys don’t cry ” or they say ” Be a big boy ” and for the rest of our ( the men) lives they bitch about how we are! If they made us what wee are then what in the hell are they bitching about? Tell me that!

  161. the annoying bloger Says:

thank you ed for reminding us that without women there would be no rock star’s[male,or female] but let’s put a side the baby issue and remember great rocker’s start young! long before we think about marrage, and children. i remember learning to play guitar at 17 which was still alittle to old if i really wanted to be a master on that instrument? but still young enough that i should have been able to smoke alot of guy’s on guitar. case in point i learned just enough on the guitar to help me with my singing, and songwriting like 90% of most women in music who play an instrument and sing. we just seem to lean toward’s what come’s easy to us SINGING, AND LOOKING GOOD ON STAGE. let’s be honest sex sell’s! and a girl that look’s good does’nt have to be half as good a musican as a man to make it! that is if your talking about a female that play’s an instrument. if your talking about being a vocalist that’s a whole different ball game! if your a girl that’s not so great to look at you’d better be able to sing! but if your a girl that can sing, and play guitar alright they’ll strap that guitar on you even if a million guy’s could play your guitar part’s much better then you because a chick with a guitar sell’s! like i said before it’s all about evolution! until little girl’s can grow up thinking more like little boy’s[example] i’m gonna learn this, and be the best at it and make my mark, and not be distracted by all the fairy tale thing’s that distract young girl’s like finding prince charming, and having babie’s. when girl’s stop following the role that has been planted in their brain’s sense birth and start creating their own path, and role in life then they can start to evolve into what nature has given male’s sense the dawn of time INDEPENDENCE!

  162. NoMo MoJo Says:

Thank you thank you thank you not so anoying blogger, your my hero and you amke great points about the age we start learning to rock (play) and I guess if a a women chooses at that age to have kids,m well them live with it and move on! Don’t blame us guys foir rocking! I love you man!

  163. Wow, the blog is alive!
I started guitar at 12. I saw many girls choose parenthood, and try and stay in the band. All the talk about chicks have to be pretty is my point. I’m an average looking woman, I sing my ass off and I play a decent bass. If I were beautiful, I might have made it in this man’s world. I rest that case.
BTW There are not that many great looking guy guitar players either, they are singers too. But they are accepted on talent.
So, back to the equal pay issue. Yes, NoMoMoJo, we women have to raise the boys too, and women like me try and promote equality. Is that so bad?

  164. NoMo MoJo Says:

NO and I do think you women do a good job with most men! I have played my whole life as well and given myself, as I still do to music and I am no farther along than you. . . maybe less. I don’t think sex or looks has as much to do with it as luck! Being in the right place at the right time and if you want to stay there, well that’s when your smarts and skills and plamming might come in!

It’s hard for us all I guess, I wish so many times I took up basket weaving rather than music because of all the let downs I have had! To work so hard just to see it all fall apart somany times, it killsyou!

By th way, did you know that the guy that played Alice in the Alice and the Cooper gang raised his own daughter yet she has a mental problem and will never have an IQ higher than a 16 year old. He waited till she was older to get back into music and then she went out and got herself pregnant and now he is raising her child! Yet he tries as hard as he can to do the right thing for all and still find time to work his music. Now I have to take mu hat off to him and ask. . . where is this girls mother!

It’s a hard world for us all and I am sorry for all the bad things I said to you, forgive me! After writing all that about Alice, I jusat felt I got carried away and owed you an apologie ( I can’t spell fer poop, sorry)

  165. Hi NoMoMoJo,
Thanks for the nice comments. I did not know about “Alice”. I too am raising a “special” girl. She’s 16 and will function at about 8 for the rest of her life. I have had maybe 200 girls in my foster home over the last 22 years. It’s always a sad story. I have never had my own kids, because I wanted music so bad. But I guess things work out for the best. I’ve adopted 4 girls who are adults now, and doing well. I did this as a single mom, and $ support from Uncle Sam. I was married for the first time 5 years ago to the best man in the world. we still do foster care.
Now that I am older, some of the musicians that I have played with over the years are finding me, and they want to get back into music, now that their kids are grown.
I’ve had a couple of record deals, I’ve been up for a soundtrack, and I have worked steady. No regrets. I will play in a band until i can’t get gigs!

  166. NoMo MoJo Says:

Sounds like those kids are lucky you never had any of your own or you might not have been there for them! I have to admire a person who takes on those kinds of things putting themselves second for another. Thank god for you!

Like you, I think I will play till I drop. I know I said I wish I took up basket making but I think I’d make some pretty ugly baskets, Ha! I do much better recording and playing and I love to tour! My only true regret is that I got old!!!! I mean who wants to see an old fart up there unless your already famous, right? Well I’ll bet your like me, ta heck with what tyeh want to see. . . we gotta rock! Otherwise I get crabby! Ha!

  167. Well it’s all nice now. Thanks. I sometimes get on my soapbox, and piss people off. But, I really am just a nice musician, and I want to see girls respect themselves, and make good choices. One of these days, we will be equal in a gender appropriate ways.
As far as seeing old farts play… I like to see good players my age! I really don’t have any interest in watching those cute young studs, with no shirts, and tight jeans… oh shit! I guess I’m still “young at heart”!

  168. NoMo MoJo Says:

Heeheehee on what you wrote, you funny, well if you like seeing old guys rock then you’d a loved a band I was in!!!! Heck, we went thru several names, one was the Geezers We told everyone we played Jurassic Rock and rehearsed at Codger Statium (hope I spelled that right!) We had a ton of old Fart jokes in our fronting!! We used to play just for the fun at private parties for a bottle of Jack Danierls. One holloween gig we came dressed up as the Blues Brothers. This little girl was there, it was at a house, and she said we should call ourselves the Booze Bros since we played for booze. . . . . .we looked at eachother, laughed and from then on we were the Booze Bros!! We used to hold the bottle up and say we played from check to check (if the bottle was half empty we’d say ” This check is have spent!) We played clubs too but parties are so much more fun! There’s always people there so ya don’t have to work to fill the room! The drinks are free and they feed ya, now there/s an old farts thinking for ya.

Yeah, we be a bunch a drunks playin classic rock ( who doesn’t thises days ) and old and ugly, but we have our fun! Oh yeah, don’t drink and drive cause ya just might spill that beverage and then it’s alcohol abuse!!

That band is gone but the drinking continues! HA!

  169. What band are you in now MoJo? I’ll come to a gig!

  170. NoMo MoJo Says:

Well I’m with a group of guys doing our own tunes and we haven’t played out much yet! I have been drumming for the BigToe band of recent but even that band hasn’t played out much. I think we have a gig at the next Indie Fest but not sure yet!

If ever you see a band called KOKsur (cocksure , not my call on the name heehee) come check us out. We play our own brand of rock and we’re currently working on the recordings of it.

  171. OK Put me on your mailing list, if you have one. If not, you’re going to have to let me know when there is a gig. The next public gig for Haute Flash is at Humphries, Outdoor venue, Sept 9th 6 to 10:30. It’s a benefit for Detroit Underground’s lead singer, who has been dealing with cancer. There is a cover, but it goes to a good cause. There are going to be a lot of good bands there, and media, and raffles, and I assume a bunch of love and stuff. I think this event will be family friendly, but I’ll check on that and post the answer.

  172. Ed, BTW loved your last entry! My dear boy, you DO get it!

  173. NoMo MoJo Says:

OK!!! Hey, how long do they keep this blog going after the end of the contest?? We don’t have a mailing list and I’m in the process of creating the Myspace site so we’ll have a way to say in touch! If this blog stays open till next year, well then we be good!

  174. NoMoMoJoI can be contacted through the HF website at; http://www.hauteflash.net

  175. NoMo MoJo Says:

Cool, you can reach me at don.hambrick@yahoo.com. . . . . if ya have a mind to!!! I feel good that we are now friends and I welcome your emails you rockin chic you!!!

I hope no A-Holes see this and email me! HeeHee, guess i deserver it for putting it here but I do have a private email I’ll send you when I see yours!

shaaron are you the lead singer? and the bassplayer? i’m a lead vocalist, and i play guitar on some song’s. i really must applaud you! to be able to play bass, or drums while singing is very, very hard! to sing while you,and the drummer keep the beat[timing]for the rest of the band is something i really admire! when i first went from playing my guitar, and singing without a band to being a member in a band the first thing i learned was just how important the rhythm section is they are the backbone of the band! just like any living creature on earth with a bad back,or spine the rest of their body does’nt function right. i feel bassplayers, and drummers are often forgotten about when people express their love for a band, but they are what makes a great band great! in my opinion bass, and drums are the hardest instrument’s to play in a band. shaaron when i see a girl playing bass it blows me away! in a world of a million guitarist you are unique! you should be VERY proud of yourself. i really must see your band!!

  177. the annoying bloger Says:

MOJO, don’t worry if your an old fart! most of the best players are. remember with age come’s experience, and really knowing your instrument! if you play well that’s all that matter’s. the drummer i play with is over fifty and he rock’s! remember your a man. unlike me who is a female in her mid-forty’s who front’s the band singing adult alternative original’s[scary] i’ve known “big toe”[mark]for year’s i saw his band a few year’s back playing between band’s at tom petty, i really liked them! what’s big toe’s web site?

  178. Hi Annoying Blogger;
Yes, I am a lead singer, and bass player. Playing bass is second nature for me. My drummer also sings lead, as do the guitar player and keyboardist. We have an all female band called Haute Flash, who was in the UMC up against Detroit Underground, Rokkem, RocKandy, and RockSlyde. We came in 2nd, week 8. There are videos on our web sites wwwhauteflash.net and .biz
Sorry that I keep putting the web site up here.
I played lead guitar for the first 10 years I was in bands, but keeping a bass player was a challenge. They kept getting pregnant! (4 of them). So I switched to bass and I love it! You’re right, the rhythm section drives the band! In earlier blogs we were talking about dynamics. The rhythm section can control that too. I didn’t want to blog that one because I was getting enough flack even trying to define what dynamics are.
I’ve been in bands for 44 years! I may not be the best player in town, but I am one of the most professional, I have a lot of credits, and I work a lot.
If you would really like to see “Haute Flash”, please try and come to the Humphries benefit for Detroit Underground’s lead singer Dave, Sept 9, 6 to 10. It;s a fund raiser, and there will be several of San Diego’s top bands there.
I don’t know if “Big Toe” has his own web site, but I am sure you can get to him through “Alice and the Cooper Gang” site from week 2 of the UMC.

  179. NoMoMoJo,
Thanks for letting me know who you are! I have to say, I thought you were from a band called “Good Mojo”, who were in the UMC on week 2.
(You might want to check them out and see if you want to be associated with their name). They play in El Cajon at a small place called Downtown Cafe, and I bet they have a web site up on week 2 also. They are a pretty good band, but I think you should check them out if you keep using “NoMoMoJo”.

My keyboard player was in a band called “Jo”. Then Jo quit the band. For a few years they were called “NoMoJo”

  180. One more thing NoMo Mo Jo;
That girl did not go out and “get herself pregnant”.
Now that we are on friendly terms, I thought I’d bring that to your attention.

Colleen! Where were you on that one? I NEED YOU! Come back!!!

  181. NoMo MoJo Says:

If your tlking about Alice’s daughter, your right, it takes two to tango! The real problem there is that they both have mental problems and should never have been left alone for that kind of thing happen!

My name was a quick choice and I really don’t even know where it came into my head from but I will check out that band and maybe change my name!

I’m like you in some ways, I got tired of playing drums one day years ago and took up on the guitar, I still play that in the band I mentioned but for the Toe, as we call him, I play drums! Your right about keeping a good bass player cause the one we have is a guitar player who plays bass now cause guitar players are a dime a dozen and there was more work for good bass players!

Anywho, I play bass as well! I guess once you learn guitar bass comes next except most guitar players I’ve ever heard when they play the bass they sound like a guitar player on the bass. There is a different way of playing bass, to me it’s more like the drums than guitar! What do you think?

  182. NOMO MOJO, thanks for clearing up your name. I had thought perhaps you had something against us!!! :~)

    http://www.myspace.com/goodmojoband

  183. I’m, well aware of the supervision issue. I let my “special” girl go to the movies with her boyfriend, and his mom. Mom went to the snack bar, and when she got back, my girl had a hicky. It’s funny, but shows how quick these things can happen. I remember when I was a teen, I was afraid to do anything wrong. I knew my mom would take away my guitar if I blew it! Kept me straight! (That, and saving myself for Paul McCartney).

Bass playing. I’m from the “KISS” (Keep It Simple Stupid) school. The more space there is from the bass, the more guitar fills there can be. Also, since I’m a singer, simple is better. The best bassists find a pocket, and stay there. I also try and cop whatever line is on the record. Some of my best playing on original material was when I played with the Tim Flannery band. He writes beautiful melodic tunes that call for a Tim Schmit style. Tim is one of my favorite players, so I enjoyed the challenge of creating simple parts that don’t interfere with the vocal lines. That’s when I upgraded my equipment to an Alembic bass, (with an SVT half stack). If you are going to play one note per measure, that note better sound great! My other favorite players are Paul McCartney and Chris Squire.
So, Tim, Paul and Chris are not what I would call “pocket players”. And, they are all very “white”. I think when the judges dinged HF on being too white, they were referring to the vocals on “Boogie Oogie Oogie”. But I think my style of playing is too white and that caused the feel to be milk toast. However, I play the part note for note. I think I have to funk up my right hand. I studied with Carol Kaye for several years, she never told me I was too white… but there is always room to grow!

  184. NoMo MoJo Says:

Well, if there’s one thing I’ve learned in thru the years. . . ya just can’t please em all! You do your best and your style is your style! If they don’t like it there’s not much you can do, ya gotta be you! Sounds to me like you got the gear so all can hear!

LHC, I didn’t know that the name I kinda just pulled outta my A- – was a no no name! Sorry and no, I don’t hate anyone on this blog! There are a lot of very smart and talented folk out there! It’s too bad all the fun has to wait till next year! I wish they had a round two show coming up sooner! Ha!

  185. NoMo MoJo Says:

Boy, guess this blog is as good as dead! No one comes here anymore!

  186. LHC I heard that you will be at the V Lounge soon. Maybe we can have a UMC reunion of sorts? POST IT & THEY WILL COME!

  187. the annoying bloger Says:

NoMo MoJo, don’t change your name! just because there is a band called “good mojo” it’s your nickname not the name of your band. remember band’s come, and go and member’s come, and go, and names of bands change like the wind! shaaron i did’nt know you were part of an all girl band i will definitely check out your site! does your group ever play original showcases?

  188. the annoying bloger Says:

“SHARRON” i just checked out your site YOU LADY’S ROCK! no wonder you did’nt appreciate me talking about women in music versus men. you have every right! but you must know that there are very few women who can play as well as your group can. you are part of one of the VERY BEST FEMALE BAND’S out there! or EVER!!! when i think of that band vixen compared to your band i have to giggle!! your group also play’s some MEAN BLUES! when i hard you do ball and chain sharron i was green with envy! do be able to master one of the master’s i’ve never heard anyone do janis as well as you. you should be proud! your an inspiration to all musician’s[male, and female] and as an older female musician myself i liked to thank you for making me feel like it’s never to late to rock

  189. NoMo MoJo Says:

Right on Annoying Blogger. . . . why do you call yourself that? Your not!!!

OK, I won’t change me name. I think I called myself that cause the blog got really slow one day I thought there was just no more mojo in the blog! HA!

I have to agree there are some great lady rockers out there and they don’t seem to get the props they deserve! No, I’m not a women but I still love to watch em rock out! I was at the House of Blues not long ago doing a show and there was a band that had a girl drummer, she kicked it’s ass I thought!

  190. Ok… I can’t continue to allow this “name” game to continue without a comment… Yeah… I know I said goodbye, but I can’t stay away from this topic!

What I can’t understand is why people tend to have opinions and at times very strong opinions and state them, often times, as if they are fact. Yet……….. are afraid to state who they really are. Instead they hide behind alias’ such as “NoMo MoJo”, or “the annoying blogger” or the others who have hidden behind made-up names. Why not come forward and give validity to what you have to say with your true identity?

Shaaron, Patti, Ed, and myself have all taken the slings and arrows shot at us for our views and opinions, yet we have stood up proudly and taken whatever people have wanted to deliver to us without having to hide behind some clever (or so some think) alias name. If you cannot stand up and say who you are, your opinion has much less validity…. in my opinion. Often times I have agreed with what the alias people have to say, but I place little value with what they’ve said because of the mask they choose to hide behind.

But then I digress… NoMo… I totally agree with your statement that women don’t seem to get the props they deserve. And when they do finally get the props they have had to rise to a much higher level of showmanship than their male counterparts. There is yet an unequal playing field in the area of rock musicianship. It’s getting better little by little, but a long way from equal opportunities. Other genres have done better (country, jazz, opera), but rock is far behind those. But women like Shaaron, Heart and Janis Joplin will continue to chip away at that ceiling.

Well that’s my statement, and I’m Colleen… proudly stated!!

    Peace~~~

  191. Thank you all for the wonderful props to my” Ball and Chain”, and stick-with-it-ness. I have been a big mouth on this blog. It’s my first, and I really enjoyed it. Yes, I have had a ton of experience, and I know there are women out there who rock their asses off. I like to include myself in that group.
I have said that I am average looking, and that maybe I could have been more successful if I had the “look”. NoMo said that it’s not looks, it’s luck. I have to remind myself that Janis Joplin wasn’t much to look at, nor was Big Mama Thorton. But the Britney Spears and all the “total packages” of today are what come to mind. At this point in my career, I’m just hoping that as we baby boomers age, I can keep working, singing to my peers. So, all you old rockers, ROCK ON!!! Don’t let the managers, buyers and agents put out your flame!
Colleen, OMG, thank you for putting my name in the same sentence as Janis and Heart! I know I will never have their level of fame, but I will be smiling for a long time from that compliment!
And, Colleen, your comment about country, jazz and opera being more accepting of older women. You are 100% right. I have been looking for a jazz band to play in. I have a stand-up, and I’m working on the chops. You ought to see me wrap my leg around the big bass and sing “Fever”. I’m gonna bring it into HF soon. It’s funny.

  192. Would love to see the upright! Electric bass has it’s place and is great in most bands, but the sound, look and feel of an upright plays almost as much to my soul as drums.

Jazz… one of my other favorite genre! It’s so good to sit back after a hard day at work, put in one of my cds of jazz with a glass of wine and float away.

I guess when it comes down to it… I just enjoy music… period.

  193. Is anybody out there?

  194. Thanks to the Xceptions, Danielle Loprsti, Detroit Underground and Jump Start, Haute Flash has been booked at Humphries!
We will be playing Monday Sept 16th 9 to 12:30 right after the Lindsey Buckingham concert!

It took four other bands, Fred Thompson, many e mails and a few phone calls, but we are BOOKED!

    Please come and support us!

  195. That’s Tuesday, Sept 16th at Humphries. sorry

  196. the annoying bloger Says:

colleen, i have posted comment’s under my name before but there is a reason i longer do. i now call myself the annoying bloger because whether or not what i say has any merit it still can come off well “ANNOYING” at time’s? SHARRON your playing with lindsey buckingham! WHAT AN HONOR lindsey is one of my all time favorite guitarist he is a master at his craft. so your booked to play after him? your band’s not opening for him? i was looking forward to seeing your band, and now i can also see lindsey for the first time without the “MAC” SW-e-e-T

  197. Blogger — I’m not saying you shouldn’t use the alias… I’m just saying that your opinions/thoughts/ etc. carry less validity… in MY OPINION. We all have to do what we need to do. And if you need the mask, then it is what it is! So be it. Everything’s good.

    ~~Peace

  198. Hi Annoying!
Lindsey Buckingham is playing the outdoor Humphries venue, and we are playing in the Backstage Lounge, right after him. Many bands put on their bios that they share the bill on this kind of event, but we are on different stages. However, the bands usually come in for a drink, so please join us!

  199. NoMo MoJo Says:

Too cool anyway Shaaron, He is one hell of a player!

Colleen, I don’t know who you are so your name really means nothing to me and has nothing to do with any facts you bring to the blog. Most of us who use made up namkes are here for the fun and this is not that seriuos, it’s fun!!! Get it???? Don’t be so serious all the time and enjoy yourself. . . live a little and let the rest of us do the same. My real name is Don, does that make whatever I’ve ever said here have more validity now?

  200. the annoying bloger Says:

RIGHT ON MOJO! if other bloger’s keep bitching there really will be NO MORE MOJO! our mojo is what keep’s this site fun! COLLEEN like i said there is a very good reason i don’t use my name! and it has nothing to do with you or the opinion’s i share. if you don’t like annoying bloger how about i call myself Ms SECRET AGENT? or UNDERCOVER BLOGGER? or JANE DOE? or COLLEEN’S WORSE NIGHTMARE? i’m just kidding colleen. if i could tell why i don’t use my name you would understand, so i guess you’ll just have to trust me. so enough about blog name’s is’nt there somemore fun music topic’s we can all debate about? how about the fact that unlike year’s ago guitarist are getting harder to find out there! remember when 99% of all musician’s were guitarist? BLOG ON!!

  201. NoMo MoJo Says:

HA!. . . your right but only if you mean Good Guitarists! Seems they lost their luster and skill these days with the young ones! I should clarify that statment, most of the youug ones! I’m a drummer and I seem to play better than a lot of so called vetrans on guitar! Colleen, that’s just my opinion and not proven fact so you know!

Hey Annoying Blogger, keep it coming cause we know how to have fun!!!

  202. Everybody;
I have met Colleen, and she is a wonderful gal. Very smart, married to a musician, and very supportive of live music. Cut her some slack.

So, what do you all think about the presidential election, and the running mates? I am very happy there is a woman on a ticket, even if I am liberal!

I sure hope whoever wins can turn this economy around. Gas prices are killing me. I drive a Mercedes SUV, and I can’t even sell it to get a cheaper to run car!

Most of you know I am a foster parent. The support payments are about $150 under what it costs to keep a kid, and everything goes up except a paycheck! I have been making $100 a night for 20 years! It’s time we raise the price of live entertainment!

  203. NoMo MoJo Says:

Your right about getting paid more to play live but you know as we all do. . . that will never happen! People will just stop coming to see us!

As for Colleen, we’ll all cut her slack if she can do the same! That’s all we ask.

We should outlaw D.J’s cause they took all the work from us!

  204. the annoying bloger Says:

sharron your lucky your in a great band that is well established and has been playing around town along time. most band member’s make about the same as i did year’s ago when i was in a cover band. mojo i don’t think it’s so much that the fan’s won’t pay to hear live music as much as it is that club’s know they can get band’s cheap because like we all know musician’s love to play, and most group’s will take what they can get. look at the venue’s where band’s showcase their original’s you better sell ticket’s to your show if you want to get paid, and selling ticket’s to your friend’s is’nt very fun[i know] i’ve been down that road! yes NoMO MoJo DJ’s have pushed us live player’s to the curb. i’m just gald there are still some club’s that feature live music it is just to bad they don’t pay their artist what their worth!!

  205. Well at least I got the blog going again! It was getting slow! Hey thanks Shaaron for the support. Like I said before, we have taken the slings and arrows slung at us and have stood proudly by what we’ve had to say and taken it! I still hold true to that!

I personally don’t care if Blogger or NoMo (or anybody else for that matter) want to use alias or not. It’s their choice and like Blogger said, they may have a reason for doing so. What I care about is that if they have an opinion about something they have a right to do so. But if their opinion causes possible controversy for an innocent bystander, then that is not right. For instance… we had “Monster Drummer” an alias person who voiced his/her opinions. The alias in this case, caused much confusion for the band’s Monsters of Rock’s drummer. No matter how many times “Monster Drummer” (and I’m assuming this person is male) stated that he was not the band’s drummer, his comments were still thought by some to be the band’s. The same hold true for the Good Mojo band when “NoMo MoJo” keeps using his alias. So… NoMo I ask you… do YOU get it?

Blogger, you asked if it were better if you used “COLLEEN’S WORSE NIGHTMARE” as an alias. Fine with me!! Untrue though… because I’ve had much worse nightmares than your (or NoMo’s) editorial “attacks”! :-) But you see the difference? “COLLEEN’S WORSE NIGHTMARE” does not give the impression that you are stating an innocent bystander’s opinion. People would not confuse your opinion as “Colleen’s Worst Nightmare” as mine. And don’t get me wrong… using a “name” such as Tom, Shaaron, Colleen, etc. does not necessarily mean that is the real name of the person “penning” the blog! I happen to know that way back in the early weeks of the contest, that “Ben” was not that blogger’s real name. And I guess I’ve possibly made some people think that “Blogger” and “NoMo” have no opinion. OH NO!! THAT IS NOT THE CASE!! I’m just saying that if NoMo used the name “Don”, I would take his opinion more seriously. Don, you have a right to call yourself whatever you want! But please be careful that people know your statements are YOURS and not necessarily those of the band, Good Mojo.

Shaaron, hmmmm talking politics? No… don’t think I’ll go that route. When I was bartending, one of the golden rules was to not discuss politics or religion. I still hold true to that here! But would LOVE to hear what others have to say!!

Went to see JV last night. He had Coral MacFarland with him. What a relaxing evening of good jazz music. The venue was outdoors at the Marriott in Coronado and just as they finished their last set and said goodbye to the crowd, S.D. set off fireworks over the bay. The timing was as if Jaime had set up that final “punch” for his gig! Well done Jaime!!

We are so lucky to have such fantastic musical groups here in San Diego county! Jaime Valle, Haught Flash, Monsters of Rock, San Diego Symphony, and yes… Good Mojo, the band! And look at all the wonderful genres we get to experience!

So in closing I will say to Shaaron, Annoying Blogger, Ed and NoMo, keep voicing your opinions. You all matter! Just be careful you are not accidently mis-representing innocent bystanders! The above opinions are from me… Colleen… my real name…. or so I say! ;-)

    ~~Peace!

  206. Hey Ed!! Where are you??? Haven’t heard YOUR golden opinions lately! Have we bored you away? It’s been so quiet and calm here on the dying blog! It’s got your name on it… shouldn’t you visit once in a while?

  207. You don’t talk religion or politics? How sad and boring. I’m a bartender too and I talk religion and politics whenever I get a chance.

RELIGION: Religion is a farce perpetrated by alien lizardmen to keep us from knowing their intentions

POLITICS: politicians are the human slaves of lizard aliens whose mission it is to make laws that keep us from knowing about the lizard-alien presence

  208. how funny colleen, I was writing the above post before I even saw what you wrote about me not writing anything.

I was JUST thinking, “Hey, it’s about time I dropped in on the blog and spewed some more of my bullshit.”

By the way, just so you know, I read everything y’all are writing. I just don’t chime in as much because clearly, the inmates are running the asylum now.

    ROFL

  209. ED!! You’re back!!

Ha! I LOVE your definitions for Religion and Politics!! Could the alien lizardmen (and btw… lizardWOMEN) be those alias people here on your blog? hmmmm something to think about!

Inmates running the asylum? Yep. Annoying, NoMo and Shaaron… head inmates!

  210. Yeah! The blog is alive! Here’s a topic for discussion; Today HF is playing a gay wedding. The happy couple have been together for 25 years. I have heard talk that the right for same sex couples to get married, might be recended. Since this issue is political, social, religious, and personal, how do you bloggers feel about it? Musicians, for the most part, are considered liberal. I am liberal.
My thought is that it’s no ones business who you chose as a spouse, or what you do in the bedroom. I also had some thoughts about calling gay marriages “unions” or “partnerships”, with all the same legal rights as a traditional marriage. But does it matter what name we use? Does love have limits?

  211. I have often wondered why it is acceptable to sanction war, shooting and killing other humans for the sake of country or turf, yet it is so “horrible” for acceptance of allowing two people who happen to be the same gender to marry and love one another. Why is killing more acceptable than love?

    ~~Peace

  212. oooh, Colleen, is that you bucking up and getting political? oooh, how did it feel? exciting huh?

My feelings on gay marriage is..

GAY MARRIAGE: Opponents of gay marriage are actually alien lizard creatures trying to manipulate human social relationships so that we may continue breeding fruitfully so that the human population grows large enough for the alien creatures to farm and eat us because the food source on Planet Lizardius is diminishing fast.

  213. Hi… I haven’t been here for awhile. Haven’t you guys gone home yet!
    ha ha jk
I mentioned to Ed that I am leaving JumpStart to pursue something different in music…
Tonight is my last night at the Island in Coronado if anyone is interested.
    9:30-1:30
See ya and Keep on Rockin

  214. No Ed… speaking to the inequalities of people being able to love one another is NOT politics. It’s being open to love not war. Yes… I’m an old hippie and proud of the song by the same title.

And no… I’m not a lesbian. I love men, especially my husband. However I do have freinds who are gay, and they want to be able to express their love for one another the same way that my husband and I do.

Now Ed… your description of GAY MARRIAGE… what an interesting, albeit troubling view of gay marriage. So what you are saying is that we are all just food source? Why don’t the lizard creatures “grow their own” on Planet Lizardius? Ah! Another topic! Grow you own food, and going green!

Gay relationships… not politics and not religion.

    ~~Peace fellow bartender!

  215. DAVE!! YOU’RE BACK!! HI!

You’ve been missed! Yep, we’re still around. I was gone for awhile, but had to return recently. So glad I did, otherwise I would have missed your announcement.

Leaving Jumpstart! Say it ain’t so! :-) What direction are you going? Still in S.D.? I hope so! Keep us posted on where we might follow you. Good luck in all you do!!

    ~~Peace

  216. Hi Colleen et al
I’m just about to head over to the island…
I will be playing one more (very cool) public gig with JumpStart. Sunday, Sept 7th at the Coronado Brewing Company. It’s their Anniversary and we start around 2pm. Free Food, $2 pints (maybe $3) no cover, no age limit and JumpStart!
Also, our JumpStart MySpace will convert to my music MySpace after that date so please bookmark it, eh?!!!
What am I gonna do? I just purchased ProTools and I’m going to put some of my ideas down. I’ve been hoping to entice Ed to submit some lyrics. (we’ll see if I can lure him in) After a few songs I will make a CD then collect some musicians to play out and see what happens.

  217. Dave! That sounds so cool! Wish I could be there tonight, but have too much to do around the house. Will try for the 7th. Keep us posted and best of luck. Let us know if you are successful with those Ed lyrics!

  218. I’m all about it Dave, just tell me how you want it to go. Do you want me to submit lyrics that you can write music to, or do you want to submit to me music that I can write lyrics to, or a little of both?

  219. Just got back from the gig. It was a blast!
Ed, I’ll drop you a line sometime this week with a few ideas… Have fun in New York.
Hope to see the bloggers next Sunday!

  220. Dave — You are gettng ready to travel a different, yet familiar road. How does that feel? Leaving the road well traveled for the detour road. Going in the same general direction, yet many new sights and sounds! How exciting that must be for you! Yes definately… keep us posted! Hoping to see you next Sunday.

Ed! Say hi to The Mother for me.

Shaaron — how did the gig go?

  221. The gig went well. It was fun to see how the couple “adjusted” for the ceremony. They have been together 26 years, so it was more of a blessing of their love than a “starting a life together” theme. Food was wonderful, and the setting (outside, overlooking the bay, at the Sheriton Harbor Island) was fantastic. Lots of music, and people from all walks of life.

Dave, is Jump Start going to replace you? Good luck to all of you. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help!

  222. the annoying bloger Says:

as a special gift to COLLEEN i will be changing my name to ? i still have’nt come up with a name that will get colleen’s panty’s out of a bunch. any idea’s? [colleen i'm sure you have a few name's for me] HEE,HEE. i really hope everyone[especially colleen] know’s this blog is for fun. if you can’t take a joke I WILL HAVE TO TALK TO THE HEAD BOSS ON PLANT LIZARDIUS AND HAVE YOU DEPORTED TO PLANT SOURPUSS! where all laughter, and smiles are punishable by death! anyway back to the fun of blog! shaaron i believe as you do everyone has the right to marry for love and be HAPPY.

  223. the annoying bloger Says:

DAVE i think it’s great your moving on to achieve your dream of creating your own music! i’ve never heard jumpstart but i’m sure you were part of a great band! but jumpstart is a coverband right? if i’m wrong i’m sorry? if i’m right then i believe your choice to leave is right. whether or not you ever make it you went for it playing your OWN MUSIC!! and that is the best achievement any artist can achieve!! goodluck, and keep us posted. THE CHICK[alias the annoying blogger]

  224. To AB… aka ?… aka CHICK — call yourself whatever you want, just don’t let it have effect on innocent bystanders.

I know the blog is for fun. You must be somewhat new to the blog or else you’d already know that. I’ve been with this since the beginning. We’ve had fun discussions and some intense discussions, yet those of who do not have sensitive skin can take it.

You however seem to be very defensive to this particular subject, because you are not hearing what I’m saying. I DON’T CARE WHAT YOU CALL YOURSELF AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT CAUSE PROBLEMS FOR OTHER PEOPLE, GROUPS OR BANDS!!!!! Can you imagine how sad it can be if a potential hiring agent saw something negative that “Monster Drummer” may have said on the blog and the BAND, MONSTERS OF ROCK, was denied the gig because of mis-representation of “Monster Drummer” on the blog? (Sorry “Monster Drummer” no offense meant in the above example. Just trying to make a point.)

If caring about innocent bystanders is having my boxers in a bunch, then I gladly where them that way, because I care about false accusations.

  225. JumpStart is a cover band. UMC Week Three… beat out by 6ONE9.
Playing in a cover band is great fun. There is nothing like pulling off someone’s favorite song and nailing it. But, when the gig is over then what do you have left?

Some of the others in JumpStart have asked if I would stick around and do this other thing on the side. I know I have to focus all of my musical attention to this new project or it’s going to be mediocre.

I’m sure JumpStart will replace me however our drummer mentioned that he will probably not continue with the band after I’m gone.

Thanks for all the well wishes. You can keep up to date with me at JumpStart’s MySpace since it is really my… um MySpace. ha ha

    http://www.myspace.com/jumpstartrocks

It will look more like my own after next Sunday when we do our last public gig. Hope to see some of you out there.

And now! a confession! Dickie is my evil scitzo personality. But all in good fun! :::love ya Colleen:::

    Keep rockin’

  226. btw, there are two Daves in JumpStart…
Big Dave and me, little Dave by default.
just incase you go to the site and get confused.

And! Big Dave is curious and will probably participate with me when I take my songs out live.

  227. Colleen, I don’t understand why you said I had a “troubling view of gay marriage.” From the way I read your point of view, we are on the same page. What’s troubling bout my view?

  228. i’m longer going by the annoying blogger[for reason's best not repeated! AGAIN!!] i have been on this blog since the beginning i have also written blog’s under my name. “monsters of rock” are the reason i am apart of this blog. but fun, and adventure are why i stayed but if i keep reading reply’s to my blog’s from people who can’t take a joke then i’ll be forced to do all of my blogging at lizardius.com

  229. Hey Chick,
Check out my friend, Rosie Flores web site. Her web is ChickWithPick.com
I think you will like it! I’ve know Rosie since we were in a band together in 1966!
    Another woman who ROCKS!

  230. to everyone who read’s this i am REALLY,REALLY JOKING!! COLLEEN i think no i KNOW your cool!!! and just to let you know my comment on using the name colleen’s nightmare was a cut down to myself not you[meaning i'm a pain in the a*s*#s]like someone’s nightmare! so let’s bury the hatchet[in my head] HEE HEE. and remember “she’s my little rock’n'roller.

  231. Ed — we are on the same page! It’s just that my page is sans lizards! I’m beginning to be concerned about your ongoing fascination of lizards… :-)

  232. Colleen; It’s guy thing. Remember when they are little kids, they catch lizards and bugs? It’s part of the not growing up thing! My 50something husband shoots aliens on video games…same thing

  233. lizard- something often small in size, can feel kind of wet, and seem’s to disappear as soon as you see it, or touch it[sound familiar?] a small garden snake might also come to mind.

  234. Chick!!
ROFLOL!!! I love the definition!! May I copy that?
Poor Ed…. And here he was so proud of his lizards!!

  235. COLLEEN[consider it your's] my definition was inspired by your last blog to ed. i take it you’ve read my last few blog’s and forgiven me? i look forward to being one of your blog friend’s. i promise to less ANNOYING.

  236. a new topic? shaaron asked us what we all thought of gay marriage. i was wondering what people thought of marriage in general?

  237. Marriage is wonderful! My guy treats me like gold, cooks, and is really hansom! And, he married me while I was a foster mom for 7 really out of control teen aged girls! It’s true. Kids need 2 parents, and Dick is a one in a million role model, father, husband, supporter and fun man!
I waited for the right guy, and I got him!
What does he get in return? I treat him like gold, run a tight ship, give him a home he wants to come home to, love him, support him in his career, and make him feel like the wonderful man he is!
Marriage is the best for everyone! When it’s right, it’s great!

  238. Marriage — a really good thing as long as there is mutual respect, love and trust. Without those, marriage can be a challenge. I’m a firm believer in people living together before marriage.
Marriage should be well thought out before going to that level unity. Too many people, especially those in show business go too quickly to the marriage level. With all the stresses show business has, it is too easy for a marriage to fail due to all the outside pressures. That’s why we are so amazed when celebs last for any length of time.
Shaaron — you do have a terrific man! The first time I met him, I immediately felt the respect, love and trust he has with you.
Maybe we should all put a refrigerator in the garage! :-)

  239. i am a strong believer in marriage! i’ve been married along time. i also think colleen is right you should live together awhile to find out if a life together is right for the both of you. but i also believe if you remain together you should GET MARRIED. i don’t believe that saying “why do we need some piece of paper to prove we love each other” well you don’t but if your really in love and want to spend the rest of your lives together you should get married. the reason being- when you marry the bond you have is so much stronger!! it is alot easier just to walk away when thing’s get tough when your not married. when your married you can’t just walk away leaving the other person screwed[maybe with no money,or children to care for] sometimes the fact that your married can help you work harder to keep it together. along time ago my mother shared some of her wisdom when she told me “the only thing wrong with living with someone is in the long run someone always get’s hurt” i lived with my husband for almost two years before we got married. i think it’s better to wait until your older to get married[i was 26] anyone under 25 i think is still to young. people learn, and change so much in their twenty’s. like so many people say “don’t waste your twentys” meaning that is when opportunity, growth, career, and achievement are more easily optioned.

  240. I waited a LONG time to find the right guy. I was 53 when Dick and I married. His second, my first. I had my adopted girls, foster girls and a very active music life, but when I found Dick, I was “whole”!
The cool part about us, is that we were friends for 10 years! He came to me one day and said he and his ex wife were splitting up, and would I like to go out. I said as soon as you file for divorce and move out, yes. He asked me to marry him on our first date! I knew the second that he asked me out that I would spend the rest of my life with him.
He is everything I have hoped for! And, I hope my daughters use him as a barometer for finding their own husbands.
I’m considering getting a tattoo on the back of my neck, “I love Dick”. But people who don’t know me might get the wrong idea.

  241. sharron you are very lucky to have a great man. maybe it is’nt luck at all? because it sounds like you are a wonderful person yourself maybe that is why you wanted so long to get married because you were’nt going to settle for just anybody. i am also blessed with a great husband. i think the fact that i grew up with a wonderful father helped me know what to look for in a good man. honest, kind, supportive, smart, funny, giving. it is kind of sad but before i met my husband i went through a few different long, and bad relationship’s with men who treated me very bad. i don’t know why i had become so self destructive? i was’nt raised that way my parent’s never fought or treated each other with disrespect. thank god i finally decided i was tired of being treated like sh##T,and no one was to blame for my misery but myself, and after wasting my early twenty’s with a loser I GREW UP and started to really take responsibility of my own life, and happiness.

  242. Shaaron — I think you are correct about the tattoo, but it might be fun watching reactions!!

Chick — I agree with you about the living together then getting married. The “paper” gives you an additional bond to what you already have, and will also give you rights you may not have in case of emergencies. Your description of those men before your current husband sounds very familiar to me. Perhaps we are more alike than we knew! Hope that doesn’t scare you off.

Shaaron — I hope to see you and HF tomorrow night. I’ve heard several people are going to try to be there. That’s one thing I like about musicians. They are very supportive of brothers and sisters in the field.

  243. i guess this is now “the official chick blog” i was hoping that NOMO MOJO or maybe even “ED” would comment on their male opinion of marriage? but i guess like alway’s MARRIAGE is left to us LADY’S!!

  244. Chick — you know the males are so afraid of commitment! Marriage is a topic that is very scary to the male ego! But doesn’t surprise me… through all these blogs, it’s the guys who run first when the topic gets tough/sensative! Only we ladies are able to hang on.

Shaaron — once again I’d like to say how much you guys ROCKED at Humphrey’s Tuesday night!! WOW! Once you got the guitar problems straightened out you guys took off! And that last song!! OMG! I wish you could have been wandering around the audience with me while you were singing and could have heard all the fantastic comments people were saying. I was sitting right behind David and he was smiling, applauding and was standing up when you ended the song! Very impressive!! Didn’t we all have fun?!? And for a good cause.

I’m hoping to make it to next Tuesday, but a few things have come up. If I can do some rearranging we will try to make it. I’ll keep in touch.

HEY ED!!! Have you floated back home yet?!?

  245. edwin decker Says:

Still in NY – I will silence all of your bizarre , disturbing views of marriage when I get home, tell you how real marriage works in the real world. stay tuned!

  246. Ed!! We are waiting with baited breath!!! I think you should also have a “guest” writer’s viewpoint … W should give her point of view… and how about “The Mother”’s view too before you head home?!?!?

  247. “Banding Together For David” was a great success! The bands were all terrific, and the love was rampant. Playing on the big outdoor Humphries Stage, (my 3rd time, first time at night) was really fun. I was thinking of all the famous bands that have been on that stage.
Rockslyde opened the show. They have been rehearsing! Sounded much tighter than at the contest, and if they compete next year, better watch out!
Then “Help” took the stage. I am a huge Beatles fan, and these guys can do no wrong! Last night “Rain” was on PBS. I was mentally comparing the two groups. If “Help” had the production money behind them, they would sound as good!
Ruby and the Red Hots were next. This band has some heavy players! The bassist puts new meaning to the word “pro” This cat can play. Their set was a little too long, and they took too long to set up, which messed up the time frame, but they were really good!
Then Haute Flash played, and had a great time. Lori used the back line amp, and had some tech problems, but as soon as it was corrected, we had a smooth set. Great audience response too!
Danielle LoPresti and the Masses were next. I like watching this band. They have interesting moves, and Danielle has impressive stage personality. Alicia is full of energy, and the material is interesting. This gig they added a male dancer, who was very good, but distracting.
Then Detroit Underground took the stage. Everyone moved to the dance floor, and the night peeked! Too bad they were cut off after just 4 songs, due to curfew, but it was a wonderful conclusion to a very emotional evening!
Afterward everyone moved into the Backstage Lounge to hear the Heros, and a giant jam. I closed the joint down, and went home satisfied that the night was a success.

This Tues Haute Flash will be at Humphries Backstage Lounge, following the Lindsey Buckingham concert. Please join us!

  248. ED all of us girl’s are waiting for you our KING, and MASTER to return to our little kingdom and express his insightful opinion on marriage! but i know we will read the heart felt word’s from our fearless leader who i’ve heard has one hell of a QUEEN at his side! your loyal subject, the chick…

  249. Is anyone out there?
Haute Flash is playing at Humphries Tuesday, Sept 16. 9:30, following the Lindsey Buckingham concert. Please come and join us! We need your support!

  250. Did anybody catch the Shawn Stiles weather report tonight? He was reporting from Carlsbad Art Fest and there was a band playing while he was reporting. After reporting the weather he said (referring to the band), “they are pretty good for a cover band”. “…for a cover band”? As opposed to a tribute band? I have to wonder if Shawn thinks a “cover band” is some sort of medicore “type” band??

Would that mean that a “tribute cover band” is not as good as a “tribute band”? Can’t help but think that Shawn’s statement was a put down for cover bands. Perhaps we should “educate” the Channel 8 surfer weather man…

    Hey Ed!! You back yet???

    Is anybody out there???

  251. Hi – I’m here Colleen. MISSED YOU KOOKS!

By the way, Stiles meant, “as opposed to an original music band,” not tribute. And yes, it was a slight on cover music.

Cover music is, after all, the red-headed stepchild of musical performance.

Here’s a question for you all – is cover music art? or is it solely entertainment? At the moment I’m leaning toward entertainment. Anyone care to prove me wrong.

  252. Oh, just a quick note – Dave Reynolds from Help has returned to the blog. For some reason, his post was sitting in moderation, waiting for me to approve. Don’t know why it didn’t automatically approve itself since he had blogged before. Maybe he changed his Screen Name. In any case, he posted a long time ago, and, because I hadn’t checked the “awaiting moderation” administrative page, it just sat there. So, tonight, I went in and changed the posting date so it will appear after this post instead of somewhere buried above. Also, there is another post that was awating moderation. I will change the posting date on that to. I think it was directed at Sharon.

  253. Humphrys Info? Says:

Shaaron, three questions regarding the Benefit show at Humphrys:
    1. What is the band line-up?
    2. What are the times for each band?
    3. Daniel still performing and if so is she doing an acoustic set or is she going to be backed by her band?

  254. okay, this blog is gettng boring enough that I had to come back. Not that it would make it any better, but just to let everyone have another shot at me. My group has lifted the moratorium on my participation, so her I am. Start gunning……..and thanks to edwin decker for putting me in touch with the people from DU, who have issues beyond any that are normally addressed. it really gives one pause when you know that someone is going through hardships that you can’t even comprehend. I am humbled.

  255. Hey Dave Reynolds, glad you are back. By the way, I spoke with Kevin Gallagher (owner of The Harp) today and asked him how you guys were doing over there. He told me you were tearing it up. He said, all he has to do is put a flyer on the wall, and the place goes off.

That’s great man. You guys sure do own that room when you play.

    e.

  256. COVER MUSIC: Artful entertainment.

TRIBUTE MUSIC: Dramatic entertainment of a specific cover music.

Welcom back DR. we’ve missed you.

Welcome back Ed. it’s been so quiet in blogville!

Hey Chick! You still out there???

  257. ed, I thought that you had perhaps banished me. Hope your NY vacation was good. Yeah, the Harp has been really great, you were spot on in helping us get that gig. Sometime when we play there it is almost scary, the crowd is so pumped and into it that I can barely hear myself sing. I had no idea that people under 30 were THAT into the Beatles, but they go crazy. I appreciate you getting us that gig, we do it now just for the ego boost. I wish you could have been in town for the benefit for David Nevin, you would have been proud.
Rockslyde started the show and showed grit and determination by getting thru a set that was unfortunately under-attended and had some PA difficulties. But they exhibited class and got though the difficulties and showed themselves as professionals, and were all to a man self-deprecating and appreciative of the chance to be there supporting a good cause. We came on next and had an okay performance, not our best but the crowd was really supportive. The highlight of our performance was when David Nevin came out and danced while we played. David is a nice man and he deserved the outpouring of support from the local music scene, I hope for a positive prognosis. Haute Flash was what they are, a talented group of female musicians who consistently ROCK! I did not see the other bands but the other members of Help! tell me that it was all good. We were honored to be a part of it and we remain ready and willing to help David Nevin in his fight.

  258. yeh colleen i’m still here. i’m still waiting for our master to give us his male opinion on marriage? i guess our king has been buzy after finally returning to his castle? ED? cover band’s or musician’s who copy other people’s music are still artist in the music profession because they are still musicians. the true definition of an artist is a person who is skilled in one of the fine arts, and music is one of those. but also in my opinion a true artist at heart is someone who can create their own art with the skills they know. whether good or bad it’s theirs.

  259. Oh yeah, marriage, I forgot about that.

Ok, Robert Louis Stevenson (Treasure Island, Swiss Family Robinson, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) said it best when he said,

“Marriage is a friendship recognized by the police.”

I am inherently against the government getting involved in the personal relationships of its people. As a religious matter, sure, you can make your pact with god in some church or wherever. That’s up to the religious. But as a matter of legality, the fact that the government sanctions (or doesn’t sanction) our relationships is beyond absurd.

When W. and I were dating, we both agreed that we did not want to get married (for above reasons), but that we were committed to each other in every way that a regular marriage is, except the legal document. And that worked fine for 5 or so years, and we felt as though our relationship was as strong, if not stronger, than the rest. However, the government being what it is, made it difficult for us to stay unmarried (health care, tax bennys etc.) and so, we figured the smartest move was to get married. Probably doesn’t sound very romantic to a lot of you, but I think it’s highly romantic that, as a couple, we bucked the system for as long as we could

In a further snub to traditional marriage, Willow and I had a Drive-Thru Vegas Wedding. It was fantastic. We flew to Vegas with about 15 or so of our close friends on Friday . Had a big party Friday night. Then on Saturday afternoon, rented a limo, loaded all the people into it, and drove up to a chapel drive thru window as though we were ordering burgers. To this day we call it “The McMarriage.”

the best part of it was the Reverend (whose license plates read “Da Rev”) put two speakers onto the drive thru window sil, played the wedding march, and leered at Willow, and read us our vows. Of course, we were very drunk by then. Then the Reverend climbed into the limo and we took pictures in various stages of blasphemy. Afterward, we drove the limo around vegas and barhopped for 4 hours, then, dropped off the limo and gambled and partied into the wee hours of the morning. Not to be snobbish, or to pat ourselves on the back, but It was the best, most fun, wedding I ever went to, and all our friends agreed. They still talk about it. In fact, by popular demand, for our 10th anniversary, we will renew our vows and do the same thing all over again. cool huh?

  260. Dave (from Help), no, not banished at all. Weird though, your last comment (scroll up) was again sent to moderation. Don’t know why that is. Maybe try changing your screen name or something, because, now that this blog is no longer attracting new visitors, I rarely visit the admin page. Anyway, glad you’re back. I’ll be down to a Help gig soon for sure. Probably the Harp, or other.

  261. ed i agree you should’nt need a piece of paper to prove that two people want a life together. but then again you and your lady have a great solid relationship. i am also lucky having found my mate for life! but that silly piece of paper has saved many from being screwed big time! left with nothing “no money” children to care for, or children they can’t even see! people left high, and dry when times got hard. it is to bad people need a marriage license to stop them from screwing over someone that they once loved now that they want out but to many times that is the case so that is one plus of being married[you can't F##K me over]but the greatest plus of all is that DEEP,CLOSE bond!! you may love that person with all your heart but when you marry them those feelings grow even DEEPER!!

  262. any new comments, or opinions on what makes a true artist?

  263. That’s an excellent point Chick. No doubt marital and divorce law have protected many a person over the years, and, at the moment I can’t really see how to get around that without having a legal marriage. I will say that, as a bit of a Libertarian, I usually lean in the direction of “don’t rely on the government to protect you, protect yourself” meaning, in my perfect world, where the State doesn’t get involved in the relationships of it’s people, that couples could draw up their own legal agreements, like pre-nups, except these I imagine would be called post-nuptials, in which certain agreements are made, such as, if the woman is home taking care of the kids, and he’s out making the money, she’s entitled to half. If your man won’t sign such an agreement, then perhaps he’s not the man for you.

As for the cover band as artist questions, I agree with your definition of art, to a degree. I still think however, and this is probably my own definition more than an actual one, I think art exists in composition. Now, composition can be as overt and obvious as a musician writing his own song, or as small and nuanced as a cover musician changing one note in a song he’s covering.

So, i guess, yes, an cover band can be an artist. But to me, not nearly as much as the original musician. I see it as a sliding scale with cover bands (depending on how much they “own” the music) being mostly entertainment with some artistic temperament, while original bands are mostly art with an entertainment temperament.

That said, this is no insult to cover music. Entertainment is what it is, and I for one respect and adore entertainers. Not everyone can be an artist, nor should they be. to me, true artists are a rare breed, and the rest of us in the “arts” are in the same boat – regular people who have a knack for putting smiles on faces.

  264. HI!
I left a quick review of the “Band Together For David” concert when I got home from it. I have to say that Evonne Darby did a great job putting it all together. She is a one woman promoter!
After “Help” came “Ruby and the Red Hots”. They are very good musicians, but went a little long. They have a bass player to die for! Then
“Haute Flash”, then “Danielle LoPresti and the Masses”. Danielle had a male dancer on stage, who was very good, but distracting. Last was DU, who had to cut their set short due to time restraints. It was a very good night!

Dave, from Help! Welcome back. You guys are the best! I enjoyed every minute of your set!

RockSlyde is getting better and better! Keep it up guys!

Haute Flash did a night at Humphries Back Stage Lounge. It was a good night, but what made it really special was three drummers, all standing stage right watching Garrison play. Andy from DU sat in with us, and Larry from Eve Selis, and the mighty Rockslyde drummer, all there smiling and being supportive! Hey, Ed, we felt the love then!

  265. P.S. The entry I did on Sept 12 is the one where I did a run down of all the bands.
It isn’t easy, is it Ed?

  266. Not easy at all. But fun. I’m so glad all these bands that have come together from UMC are supporting each other out there. It’s like a little family now. I love it.

  267. One of the benefits of participating in the UMC was the friendships that have developed. HF has been very lucky! Danielle, Alicia, Andy and Evonne and the rest of DU, RockSlyde, and, Dave from Jumpstart have not only become friends, they have helped HF with gigs and promotion.
Before we did our set at the contest, I had blogged that the promotion that bands can get from the casino was worth it’s weight in gold. Even when DU was added to our week, and it was a no brainer that DU would win over HF, it was still a good business move to stay in the contest, and try our best. It would have been nice to not have DU on our week, and I was confidant that we could have won that round, (we did come in second), however, it did work out for the best!
HF is still rehearsing, upgrading our material, gigging, and getting ready for next year!

  268. Shaaron! Good to finally hear how the gig @ Humphreys went! I agree with you re. the bennies from just being a part of the whole UMC event. This holds true for the audience (like me) as well. I’ve gotten to know several wonderful musicians and feel a part of the whole experience.

Being at the “Band Together…” was awesome too. It was interesting though as a non-professional musician taking part in the “performance” to watch all the camaraderie amongst all the musicians from all the bands. The feeling of wanting to help a “brother” was genuine!! Wish I would have been there to catch RockSlyde, but had “start times” as 6:00, 7:00 or 8:00, and then when we got there the marque said 5:00! And missed half the Help! set. Oh well… caught all of HF and subsequent bands. Danielle’s was awesome, but I agree with you about the dancer. Distracting.

Ed… marriage… it really, really, really scares me when I agree so whole heartedly! But thank you for you comments regarding the “art” of a cover band and saving me from the scariness. The art is being able to successfully play like the song was recorded, but most bands tend to put a bit of their own “spin” on the popular song. The “art” comes in to know just how much to put of yourself into the original music to give it a bit of yourself, but not to alienate the fans who love the original version.

    Chick… where are your comments??

Dave from Help!… where are you comments on “art” ?… on “marriage”? On whether there will be love without the license at 64? :-) Sorry…. couldn’t resist!

FYI everybody!! I heard MOR will be at the Harp this Saturday. Wish I could be there! But alas… have other plans. Too many bands I love …. not enough time…… and $$$. If anybody goes this Saturday, tell Sergio I said hi!!

    Peace ya’ll!

  269. I disagree Colleen. The way you used art in that definition is not the same sort of art I think we’re talking about. You’re using it in the same way as when people say, “the art of mixing a cocktail” which, I think, is a synonym for skill.

While I very much respect a musicians SKILL in covering another band’s song, I don’t think that’s where the “art” part of it exists. The art part of it would be the part where the artist expresses himself, which is mostly done through composition.

When one covers or copies another composer, he is expressing the emotions and ideas of someone else, hence, not art. Again, no disrespect to the cover artist, but, just not falling under the umbrella of artistic achievement.

Now, in the sense of the word that you used it, as in – “there is an art to covering a song” – then yes, I agree. But, again, I think the way art is used in that sentence is a synonym for skill.

Either way, it’s good to not be on the same page with you again, Colleen. I was getting worried.

  270. “… I disagree Colleen…” WOW WHAT A SHOCK!! I’ve NEVER heard THAT before!! I knew you would be on the wrong page on this matter.

It’s the whole cover vs. tribute type of discussion. The ART comes from the interpretation of the composer’s intent. Let’s look at Dolly Parton’s song, “I Will Always Love You”. Dolly wrote the song (I think) and was the first to record it. Many other people have subsequently recorded it. You cannot tell me that when Whitney Houston recorded it, that she did not display her artistic talent in her interpretation of that same song!! Thereby the “art”. Nobody else would be able to cover Whitney with the same soul, heart and emotion as she.

You call it skill, I call it art. Either way…. It IS GOOD to not be on the same page with you also again! I too was getting worried… Uh oh… there we are agreeing again. WATCH OUT!!

BTW are you ever going to start up another blog page for all us “hanger-ons”? This one is getting very long… but it’s fun to go back and laugh at how intense we sometimes got!!

    PEACE ~~

  271. ewwwwww
Who wants to be a part of some unskilled art? Its all tied together.
I can cover Janis Joplin, Lydia Pence, Grace Slick and others, with my own bent. Is that skill or art? what if I take a song written by a friend just for me, and do a Jains-ish vocal on it?
OK If I did that same vocal on a smoky stage, wearing nothing but thigh hi boots and a smile, is that art? (ick)
Skill is mandatory, art is what gives it the edge, even if it is a cover!
I think there has been artists that cover so well, they become more known that the original!
Are DJs artists? Some are really good entertainers, and entertaining is an art!

  272. My thoughts on marriage have been dulled by 17 consecutive years of it…….Art, huh? I think that Art is not necessarily confined to original composition, but that is certainly its purest form. It has been my experience that most people in cover/garage bands or musicians period are also aspiring writers, just mostly not very good. Now the real question is this: is the conductor of an orchestra an artist??? Is anyone even paying attention to that dude???
FYI, Help! is playing at the Harp on Oct 4th, we would love to see everyone come out. Lastly, at the benefit for David N. at Humphreys a couple of the guys from MOR were in attendance to show support, though the band did not play.

  273. actually, I agree Colleen, and I totally get what you’re saying. There is art in Whitney’s version- that’s why i said that it’s on a sliding scale. That’s why I said that a cover band is mostly entertainment, with some art mixed in, depending on how much they make the song their own.

On the sliding scale of art, the band that covers a song note for note is probably close to zero on the scale while an artist that takes a song and makes it their own, such as, Earth Wind and Fire’s “got to get you into my life” is closer to 100 on the artist scale. A band like Haute Flash, I would put somewhere in the middle, 50 percent art, 50 percent entertainment.

However, an original band that write’s it’s own music is always close to 100 on the scale, even the lamest of lame musicians, like, say, Ashley Simpson, will always be more of an artist than Haute Flash.

No offense to HF of course, what they do is brilliant and lovely in it’s own right and I would rather pay money to see their 50 percent artistry than Ashley’s 97 percent.

Cuz, after all, just because it’s art don’t mean it’s good.

Naturally, this is just my personal definition of art, my own personal gauge of what is and what isn’t art. I don’t expect anyone to agree, but I just don’t see a DJ spinning records as an artist, just because he entertains (not that there’s anything wrong with that). I don’t think entertainment is synonymous with art. I think art is in expression of self and composition.

  274. Thanks, Ed. I agree. (Darn) The vacation seems to have put you in a good mood!
I think HF is more entertainment and skill than art. However, we are working on some original stuff written by our drummer, our guitar player, and myself. Everything I have written sounds like Janis Joplin singing a Beatle tune. Maybe “Help” would be interested in doing one of them! That would be really interesting; A Beatle cover band doing original material that sounds like the Beatles!

  275. colleen you’ll have to go back abit on the blogs to read my comment’s. Ed i agree with you there should be some kind of legal right’s a person has they should’nt have to spend at least 7yrs[and that's only in calif i think?] to have common law protect you. and it looks like you agree with me that the true definition of artist is someone who creates something. in the dictionary an artist is defined as a skilled public performer,or entertainer. One skilled or versed in learned arts. One who practices an art in which conception and execution are governed by IMAGINATION and TASTE. the last sentence in the definition i think describes it best?

  276. Hi Chick!
That was smart, leave it to a woman to find the right definition!
    Imagination and Taste! Brilliant!

  277. thank’s shaaron, and according to the dictionary a skilled public performer or entertainer is an artist. i read your last blog and as a singer, songwriter i’m having trouble understanding how an original song your band is working on can sould like janis doing the beatles? the two completely different musical sounds together should create something unique, and original sounding? i know one problem vocalist have who have really crafted the skill of impersonation is finding their own voice. i think if you try singing in your natural voice[in your own timbre] don’t push your voice, don’t use your throat. most vocalist who try to get that raspy janis, plant sound are using their throat i’m probably wrong with you because as long as you’ve been singing, and as good as you sound i’m sure you’ve learned the vocal technique to make it sound like your screaming raspy notes with out shredding your vocal chords, and throat. just forget about everything thing else, who the music remind’s you of, how you should sing it[just let go!] listen to the different melodys you hear in the music. try not to follow the melody you hear in the chord changes but listen to the notes in the chords and let them help you write a melody that does’nt just follow the chord changes. maybe this sounds stupid to some people but i’m a writer whose guitar playing is often three, and four chord changes threw alot of my song’s but there are millions of melodys written within any chord progression. even if it sound’s kind of like the beatles[WHO CARES]make it your own! how many song’s out there were infulenced by some other artist[millions] just an idea because someone who plays, and sings as good as you should have no trouble creating your own music!!

  278. edwin decker Says:

Chick – yeah, it seems like we’re on the same page. Although, I don’t know if I like “taste” being part of the definition of art. There is plenty of tasteless art out there that and it is all every bit as much “art” as tasteful works. Indeed, tastelessness is a valid manner in which the artist may express his tasteless ideals.

  279. It’s funny. when I sing, I have, and have always had, a raspy voice. I sang on the Queen Elizabeth en route to England when I was three. The comment I got from my mom’s friends, is “where did she get that whisky voice at her age”. I was asked to sit out of a high school choir selection because I sounded too black, (take that Danielle), and that was years before I heard Janis. When I heard Janis for the first time, I thought, “cool, songs that fit my voice”.
So, I sing my favorite Beatles songs, and I rasp.

  280. shaaron that’s cool you were born with a voice for rock! i have a very low voice when i speak i’m often mistaken for a man on the phone but when i sing i sound like a girl? a vocal coach i once had told me my speaking voice was harming my vocal chords alot more than my singing voice. i can sing raspy in my lower register but when i go to my higher register i have to force it, and in falsetto FORGET ABOUT IT! it is hard enough for me to sing more than a few notes in falsetto without sounding thin, and breathy. i have to tell you the singing style of janis is by far one of the hardest to sing! i think if you can sing that every other style of rock vocals should be a breeze! i wish i could master that style but i never could. and few people can[expecially women!] so you should cherish your gift and write some songs that showcase your voice! janis has been gone along, long time and if you can do what she no longer can you should! like so many other great artist out there who have crafted their skill because of the inspiration, and the infulence other great musicians had on them you also should.

  281. ED i guess the dictionary used taste in there definition because they think an artist should have taste? [hee, hee].

  282. Thanks Chick. If you want to get together I’ll show you how to get the Janis rasp.
When I was a kid, I would answer the phone, and the caller would say “Are you sick, your voice sounds awful”. It’s weird though, when I do get sick, my rasp goes away. Go figure.
There’s a YouTube version of Heart’s Crazy On You done recently. She does a blues intro and ending, and wails in the middle. See if you can find it. It was a TV show on Lifetime, worth looking up. Now, there is a chick that can sing!

  283. shaaron, yes i’ve seen that heart version i recorded it. yes i love ann in my opinion she is the best rock singer of all time[male or female] i have alot of stuff on heart, they were a big inspiration for me when i was first learning to sing, and play guitar. i would love to learn some vocal technique’s from you! maybe even jam alittle. i have alot of excellent gear for recording maybe we could try writing some music together? the original group i was in is lacking a few members now[bass, and lead guitar]so i have alot of free time to work on other projects. i know your buzy being apart of a fulltime group but maybe when you have some free time we can get together?

  284. Hi Chick, E mail me at BassJamMam@cox.net and we can make some plans to get together!

  285. hey COLLEEN where are you? i miss you!!!

  286. Yeah Colleem, yack up!

  287. I’m here. Just been very busy with trying to find some free time to go spend time with all my favorite bands. Too many now to keep them straight. At least Jaime took some time off so I don’t have to try to fit him into the schedule.

Shaaron — is HF still going to play @ Barona?
Chick — getting together w/ Shaaron will be a fun time I’m sure.

The “ARTISTS” band, Good Mojo, will be playing at the V-lounge this Friday, Oct. 3rd. I hear there will be standing room only for this gig, so I guess I will try to get there early. Did anybody catch MOR this past Saturday at The Harp? I’ve been trying to find out how it went. I heard they will be at the Second Wind in Santee soon in October. I hope to catch them there.

Chick — be careful to not push the rasp too hard. If you do, you could strip those chords.

Is anybody else out there? Dave! where are you? Tom! where are you? LHC! where are you? Patti! Where are you? Ed! where are you?

Anybody got any opinions on the economy?

    Peace to all…

  288. Hi, I can’t believe this blog is still going!
    I haven’t stopped by in a while.
I played my last gig with JumpStart a couple of weekends ago. I’m a little bummed because it seems there are some hard feelings towards me from the founders, Al and JB. And that’s kinda weird because I’m not the first guitar player in their band. oh well, I’ll give it some time.
…anyway, I have a new MySpace page. Stop by, click on my name to get there. I have started working with ProTools and I have a little idea posted there you can listen to.
    keep rockin’

  289. Colleen, HF will be at Barona Oct. 28th at 7
    Yeah!

  290. Shaaron — is the stage still in the middle of the slot machine area?

  291. Dave! Hey! Yeah a few of us are still here! Trying to get back a few more, but guess most people, like you have moved on to other things. I bet they’ll be back when the next UMC comes around. We just need Ed to keep this going though so we don’t lose track of all the bands and members of the bands.

Just came back from your new MySpace page. I will try to stop by from time-to-time to see what new “art” you’ve got for us. Congratulations on going for what is in your heart. And congratulations on stepping up (at least according to Ed) to a “higher plane” of becoming an artist as opposed to an entertainer. I’m looking forward to viewing and listening to your art.

Keep rockin’ indeed and roll too!
    Peace~~

  292. Colleen, yes the stage is still in the middle of slots. No where to sit unless you are at a slot. I like the V Lounge arrangement; drinks, seats, your own amps, and intimate surroundings, but Viejas hasn’t booked us yet. So, come to Barona!

  293. Yes… I’ve been there before for a couple other bands who have played there. But… it’s a gig! The constant sound of the slots is distracting if you are there to enjoy the band, but I don’t think the casino really wants people to stop playing sit and listen.

I will try to be there. That is my hubby’s birthday, so what a better way to celebrate than to go listen to HF! He loves you guys!!

We’ve got Good Mojo @ the V-Lounge this Friday. The venue is also somewhat annoying due to the openess to the casino, but at least there is a place to sit and have a drink and a plece to dance too. When I went to Barona for one of the bands, my friend and I danced anyways in the aisle. Even got a few other patrons to join us dancing. Don’t think the management was too fond of that though! I promise to behave myself when you are there though. :-) (at least most of the time) :-)

  294. No behaving necessary!

  295. Well then….. bring on the MUSIC!! Wooooo Hooooo!!

  296. the chick Says:

DAVE, now if your band would have been full of giggles, and laughs at your departure that WOULD be something to worry about! but all bands feel abit hurt, sometimes even resentful when they are losing a good member but in time they will come around, right now their feeling the pain of the loss of a family member. COLLEEN gald your back!! yes it will be fun to get together with shaaron but i’d better start practicing more or she’s really gonna knock me on my ass when we get together! don’t worry i know all about what makes my vocal chord’s hurt that’s one reason i choice to write what i’m gonna sing, and stop singing in cover band’s.

  297. Chick — I know what you mean about being w/ Shaaron. I have many guitar playing friends, and whenever they see one of my guitars, they are surprised I play and want me to join them. I say, “oh no! I play AT guitar and only for myself and my little forest creatures.” I play well enough for me to assist me in writing my songs. (and the songs are seldom shared either).
I’m off to listen to GOOD MOJO toinght at the V-Lounge and am going to try to make it to Lakeside Rodeo tomorrow. If you haven’t heard, there will be music of the 60s @ Lakeside Rodeo tomorrow (Saturday). Sounds like it will be fun and will be a fundraiser for fire fighters. Hopefully the firefighters will be able to relax this year.
Speaking of fires… almost one year ago when the Harris fire distroyed my school. Sad memory, but lots of good memories of all the people who came to our aid in recovery. We still don’t have a building or our lawn back, but we are striving to do well with what we have and are grateful for family and friends. Thank God I had UMC last summer to provide needed respite from the work of recovery. And look at all the interesting people I’ve gotten to know through the blog!!!! I am truly a lucky, lucky person!

    Peace!!

  298. the chick Says:

colleen i’m sorry those fire’s really hit home for you. i’m so gald you, and your family are alright but it really must have been hard to be one of the family’s living where the fire hit, i can’t even imagine it!! so colleen you play guitar, and write song’s well then you should get together with me and jam[maybe write some song's?] do you sing? i’ve got some cool gear for recording also. who know’s maybe you, and i, and sharron can also get together sometime?

  299. Chick — thanks for the kind words. Yes, October is going to be a tough month for me. But like I said, we are recovering… both physically and emotionally. I hope it will get easier when the hole where the school once stood is replaced with our new building and the grass can be re-planted or artificial turf purchased (which would be our choice, but the cost will probably be beyond our capability. We are with a school district and as I’m sure you are aware, budgets are tight).
Yes, I play a little guitar and write many songs. But the songs are extremely personal and I usually burn them after I write them. A drummer friend of mine once commented that he feels that I have probably burned several LPs. He’s probably right. I’ve been writing songs since I was a teen and that was MANY years past! Lately my songs have been about dealing with the fire loss and the emotional roller coaster ride I’ve been on since last October.
Most of my songs are of a C & W genre, but some are jazz, blues, rock and paradies.
Had a great time at the V-Lounge last night. But I’m hurting big time today from dancing to all but two songs in four sets!! The crowd was large, and at 10:30 I went over to the Dream Catcher, and found that Good Mojo had a bigger crowd in the V-Lounge than the band in the Dream Catcher!
Funny you should ask about if I sing… I was was dancing with one of the guitar players last night, and while doing so he heard me singing with the band. He suddenly pushed the mic toward me. Oh no!!! I am the audience! I don’t sing in public, even though several people have encouraged me to do so. Nope! I prefer the “behind the scenes” involvment with the music industry. I felt the same way when I was involved with the theatre. But thanks for the offer to join you and Shaaron. It would be fun, but not something I could do.

    Peace ya’ll

  300. Hey Ed!!
How did the event go today? I was hurtin’ too much to head down there. It sounded like it would have been a fun event! I hope it was EXTREMELY successful and TONS of $$$ was raised!

  301. the chick Says:

colleen that’s cool, but if you ever decide to share your music i’d love to hear it! and maybe someday just you, and i could try writing something together? remember just because you write music does’nt mean you have to perform it in public. songwriters are also artist’s even if their not performers.

  302. Chick — True. I will keep your offer in mind. Thanks.

  303. the chick Says:

i guess it’s goodbye? thank you blog for all you’ve given us! the silly story’s, the heated debates, the clucking of our little group of hen’s, all the men who stopped by and were able to share some feeling’s[even if only in a blog] and most of all thank you to our master, and leader “ED” may your blog come back to life next year so we can all enjoy many more joyful wasted hour’s in the land of blog! [just kidding] your blog was really very fun! i hope to visit it again next year? THE CHICK[alias]the annoying blogger!

  304. seems sad to hear you say the words goodbye. Bummer Chick. By the way, before you go, it should be noted that Viejas is going to do another music challenge. This time it will be up Colleen’s alley. yup, country music. It’s going to be the same deal, except only 5 weeks this time. I guess they want to build it up , which makes sense to me. There won’t be a blog this time around, but I’m going to be one of the judges. It starts Nov 2. YOu guys should come down!!

  305. C & W?!?!?!??? Wooooo Hoooooo! You KNOW I’ll be there!!
OMG! Ed! YOU are going to be a judge?? How can that be???
CHICK!! Say it ain’t so! Bummer indeed!
Ed! You mean you can’t get another blog going? And here I thought you could do anything! I feel so disillunsioned!
    BTW… how’s The Mother? and how’s W?

  306. No blog this time around Colleen. I’m guessing because it’s a new event and they watching their budget. Makes sense. Maybe, if it’s a success they’ll bring the blog next year.

    W. and The Mother are great. I’ll tell them you said hi.

oh and hey, what’s the problem with me being a country judge? I know you think I don’t listen to country music but I happen to like it very much. AND I grew up with it. My dad was a country guitar player, all his brothers (my uncles) would come over and play country music and yodel – old school-like. My uncle on my mom’s side was the leader of a hippy-country band. Don’t know why you got it in your head that I didn’t like country.

  307. Ed :-)
Okay… here we go! Another controversy. I don’t think we ever saw eye-to-eye with the whole tribute vs. cover thing… or the artist as an original band vs. a cover band thing….
Just got a very good feeling that during UMC that country was NOT in your liking for genre. Just didn’t see the pleasure on your face during the (all too few) C & W bands. You very much showed more pleasure during “Alice”, “MOR”, “AIAG”, etc. But then perhaps you are really more like me than I thought and like ALL genres!! Whoa! Now THERE’S a scary thought!! JK!!
Any word on who else might be judges?
    ~~Peace

  308. Don’t know what gave you that idea Collen, the closest thing we had to country in the UMC was Mario Escovedo Experience (MEX), which was really a TEX-MEX sorta thing, and I gave them high scores. The Stillettos and Atomic Cowboys were a rockabilly groove, also not country but as close as UMC came to country. I gave Stillettos high scores. Other than that, I can’t think of any country outfits at UMC.

Bottom line is, I like all music genres. Of course, rock and roll will always be my first love. But if it’s good, I’m gonna like it.

Here is a list of my Favorite Country bands:

    Johnny Cash
    Hot Club of Cowtown
    Willie Nelson
    Merle Haggard
    Tammy Wynette
    Dolly Parton
    Conway Twitty
    Marty Robbins
    Charley Pride
    george strait
    george jones
Hank Williams I, II, and III
    Loretta Lynn
    Ernest Tubb
Flatt and Scruggs (technically bluegrass but whatever)
    Nickel Creek
    Kris Kristofferson
    waylon jennings
    roy clark.

    the list goes on.

  309. Ok… I stand corrected. Oh! That’s hard to say!! :-) Any “young” bands? Although your list is impressive. Many of my favorites as well. You are way too young to be fans of those people!!
How about Trace Atkins, Brad Paisley, Terri Clark, Lonestar, Rascal Flats, Kenny Rogers, Alabama, and one you probably don’t know but is popular in TX… John Arthur Martinez. (love his songs!), and my list goes on too!
Yep you are probably right (Oh! That’s hard to say again!!) MEX was the one closest to C & W. Perhaps I’m thinking of the year before.
Why hasn’t Viejas done any advertising for this event? Word needs to get out!! I’ll do my part.
On a different genre… any opinion of Ringo Starr’s tirade about people writing to him requesting info/autographs? Guess he no longer needs to “get by with a little help from his friends”.
Going to try to catch Jaime Valle this Saturday at Dizzy’s, then head out to Viejas on our way home to catch DU. Fun weekend ahead!!
Hey Shaaron!! Where have you disappeared to???? HF still on for the 28th at Barona?? What time are you guys going to start?

  310. Trace is cool, Alabama is great, Pure Praire League rules, Lonestar, Dixie Chicks, Rascal Flats — all very cool. As for being too young to like a lot of those bands I mentioned.

and yeah, that list is filled mostly with old timers, but you still have Nickel Creek (San Diego kids who made it big), Hot Club of Cowtown (unbelievable fiddle player), and of course Hank III.

I will always prefer the old school country to the new school, but some of the new school is pretty good too. The one thing I simply cannot stand is what I call “bubble gum” country, which is pretty much all you here on the radio these days – bubble gum country is that watered down, soulless, mainstreamized, castrated, pop-fused version of country music that dominates the airwaves. Bleh!

  311. Have to agree with you once again! Yikes! What will we have to talk about if we keep agreeing?!?!? A lot of today’s country is watered down and does not have the punch, heart, and soul messages that the old songs did. Have we had a better singer/writer than Marty Robbins? Now there’s a man who could tell a story with passion!
I had forgotten Nickel Creek was from S.D. I remember seeing them on one of the morning TV shows when they first were getting to be known. Haven’t heard …Cowtown…. maybe I have but haven’t noticed. I’ll have to google it.
And Charlie Pride! Oh how many of his songs I have listened to over and over and over again.
DIXIE CHICKS!! Yeah! How could I have missed them? Those girls rock! I love women who are not afraid to speak thier mind! (I know… imagine that!) :-)
Can’t wait til we can agrue/agree @ Viejas! Wouldn’t it be great if Greg were to show up with his harp???

  312. the chick Says:

I’M BACK!!! i left because it seemed like no one but colleen, sharron, and i ever visited the land of blog anymore? COUNTRY MUSIC? well when it come’s to country the older the better in my book? i mean some of the greatest country i’ve heard are those old rare recording’s before rock come around, when country sometimes sounded almost alittle like gospel, folk, or even blues? and when it come’s to guitarist roy clark is still one of the best player’s of all time! check him out sometime if you have’nt[ed i know you have] i’ve been told i would have done great if i had been a country artist? i sang a few country songs in one of my band’s, and have written a few folk/country songs.

  313. Hi All,
I’m still here. I had some surgery, (very minor), on my hand, and I was soaking up all the attention. What is this “no more blog” stuff?
Yes, HF is at Barona on the 28th. If the blog is over, please keep in touch with me at BassJamMam@cox.net

  314. ah yes, Marty Robbins – true country and western. And let’s not forget Marty’s flagship band, The Sons of the Pioneers. Cool Water, Tumbling Tumbleweeds… That’s the kind of stuff my dad and uncles used to play in our living room after dinner. My uncle Morrow, who owned a bunch of horses was an unbelievable yodeler. He was a real cowboy.

  315. Ed… Oh yes! Some of my favorite songs were written/sung by Marty! It’s hard for be to believe you having so much knowledge of the legends of the true cowboys! You sure don’t show that side of you as you rocked out to the likes of Alice, MOR, etc. Who would have thought you had that side of you @ the UMCs… not me! Then there was always the singing cowboy, Roy Rogers.
I used to yodel, but that was a loooooong time ago. Do love the sound however. Almost as good as Greg’s harp!
Shaaron! welcome back! I’ve missed you! Which hand did you have surgery on? I hope you are still able to ply the bass. Loosing you as one of S.D.’s top bass players would be a crime! As far as the “no more blog” issue, Chick was the one who started that going around. I’m hoping our fearless leader, Ed will allow this to continue. The next UMC is too far away to not keep in touch with ya’ll.
What I want to know is where are all those others? Dave (both of you), LHC, Dickie, Ben, Tom, Patti, etc? At least Ed’s come back a bit! Wonder if any of the rock players/lovers will show up for the C & W music???? Doubt it. Rockers tend to stay to just that genre… exception being Ed. Come on Rockers… prove me wrong! I DARE YOU!!!
    ~~Peace ya’ll!

  316. Colleen. Thank you! I feel vindicated now.

I kept saying, during the heat of the last UMC, when everyone was saying I had a preference for hard rock bands, i kept saying that I liked everything, all music. And that the reason so many hard rock bands made it to the semis and the finals was not because I had a prejudice for them, because they were clearly the best bands. I mean Rage? MOR? They were great outfits. Even Jaimie, the jazz virtuoso thought so.

So yes, I love country. AND, I love rap and hip-hop. LOVE IT! i love classical. I love oompah music. I love bluegrass, folk, ska, reggae, punk, blues and jazz. PROVIDED, it’s not that airy, breezy castrated bubble gum, fusion jazz you see all these sharp-dressed white boys playing these days. Gimme old school jazz. Gimme dirty jump jive jazz. That’s the stuff you got to watch.

PS – Colleen. there is no reason for me to not allow this to continue. Unless the Viejas top-dogs pull the plug, which I highly doubt, the blog will continue to roll.

  317. Ed — hmmmm don’t remember you saying that… but if you say you did, then so be it!

Yes, and once again I have to agree with you (ouch!) that the best bands (with the exception of one… all female band…. not mentioning any names here) made it to the finals. There were so many good bands I’m just glad you and Danielle and Jaime were the ones to suffer the slings and arrows to seat at the judgement seats.

Oompah music??? Well ok then… you do like ALL genres! Oompah is okay, but way down on my music choice list. Does go well with beer though. AND… gets better and better the lighter the keg gets!!! :-)

Let’s keep the blog rolling! All the way through the C & W contest. Perhaps we can get some fresh meat…. I mean bloggers with the next event!

Off to listen to Good Mojo to start off my musical weekend. Go Chargers!!
    ~~Peace ya’l!!

  318. Hey Colleen,
It was my right hand. I had what I thought was a little Excema, but it turned out to be some minor skin cancer. My GP, instead of cutting it out then and there, sent me to a dermatologist. Lucky for me, as he also found some freckles on my face that needed to come off. So, he did my hand. I took 2 weeks off, expecting to need to recover. I ended up with an eraser size hole in my hand that has given me NO pain. This guy is good! The spots on my face were another story; Too many for the usual freezing, he suggested an acid peel. They put this acid gel on my face and them “activated” it with a blue laser. That process felt something like a blow torch. It left me with a severe “sunburn”, and orders to stay in the dark for 2 days. My face looks like I’ve been through a nuclear war. But the good news is that this is a treatment that is also used for clearing up all kinds of facial woes, so I should look better for it. Now I’m board out of my head staying home with no gigs until the 28th at Barona.
I just saw on the channel 9 news that DU will be on the morning news show Saturday morning, billed as the winner of the UMC! If I didn’t look like the “before” poster child for a ProActive ad, I’d go down there and support them. But at this point, I scare small children. Even my dog wines when she sees me.

  319. Shaaron! OMG! What you’ve gone through! I hope all cancer is gone and we get to have you play for us soon. I know the acid peel is no picnic. One of my former bosses had that done to some skin cancer on his face, and you are right, he looked like he was recovering from a very bad sun burn when we got to see him a week later.

I will try to catch DU on the morning news this morning, but we are planning on catching them tonight at the DreamCatcher. Good Mojo had a packed night last night, as usual and we had a great time dancing and listening, drinking and eating. There is a young band who often plays a few doors down on the same night, and whenever they take a break, the band members run down to dance to Good Mojo. It’s a bit strange seeing these young people w/ Mohawk hair, and all the other looks of youth and alternative life style dancing to Classic Rock. Both bands seem to have a fun time with each other. It’s like watching two generations coming together for mutual appreciation of each other.

Hey Chick! Haven’t heard from you for a couple days. Hope all is well with you.

I heard last night that MOR is playing in Santee this next weekend. Will try to catch them.

    ~~Peace ya’ll!

  320. Dave and Ed,
I was just re-reading some of the old blogs and was wondering if you guys ever got together to work on some of those lyrics? Update needed!!

  321. Hey Colleen,
All signs of cancer are 100% gone, and there is no follow up. I caught it at the very beginning. It was the actitic keritoises/squabatious cell. (I don’t have a clue how to spell that, but that is close to how it sounds). Again, I took time off, but didn’t need to. The end result needed no stitches, and there is no pain. It’s just a little round thing, without even a cover.
My face had the pre-cancerous stuff that is usually frozen off. I used to work for Princess Cruises, (all girl trio called “Lady Luck”), and spent several years in the Caribbean, soaking up the sun. So, I’m paying for it now. I’ll be out in public in a few days. Maybe we can meet in Santee and hear MOR?

  322. so glad you’re ok Shaaron. Damn that sun! Colleen, yes, Dave and I are in touch. He’s sent me some music and I’m gonna try and put lyrics to some of it. Problem is, I quit smoking a week ago and I’m in bitter hell. Having a hard time over here. Forget about being creative, I can’t even muster the wherewithal to get out of bed anymore. I’m a miserable wretch at the moment and it’s sort of put my life on stall. I’m hoping my head will clear up next week or so so I can get dave some words.

speaking of which, shaaron, did you ever get what you needed for a quote from me? I vaguely remember you saying that you were going to take something from the blog. were you successful?

  323. Hey Ed… keep up the good work on quitting. When I had my last cancer stick, I was sick w/ the flu and couldn’t smoke. So I decided to see how long I could go without lighting up. So far, its been 28 years… and counting. Almost gave in the other night, but the person who I asked for a drag off his, wouldn’t let me. He is a good friend. Hang in there big guy, it does get easier with time.

Shaaron, would love to hook up with you in Santee at the Second Wind. We are planning on going on Saturday. The band starts at 9:00. Hope to see you there!

We went to see Jaime Valle last night at Dizzy’s in Downtown S.D. WOW!! he was with Bob Boss. They were OUTSTANDING!!! What a great setting and so fun to sit back and listen to highly professional musicians play together. Even more fun to watch the mutual respect each had for the other as they played together. They were backed by Rob Thorsen on uprtight bass and Duncan Moore on drums. ALL WERE GREAT! We had planned on going to see DU after JV, but by the time the trolley got us back to El Cajon following JV’s over 2 hour performance (w/out a break), it was too late to stop off at Viejas. Hopefully DU will play again soon and we will be there that time.

Going to stay home today and cheer for the Chargers. GO CHARGERS!! I have been a Charger fan all my life through good times and bad. And there have been many bad times with which to suffer through too! But from Lance Allworth to LT, I remain loyal!!

    Shaaron — continue your recovery
    Ed — continue your recovery
Chick — recover your continuance with the blog
Dave — continue your coverage of writing lyrics w/ Ed. Can’t wait to hear what you two come up with!
JV — continue your recovery of jazz to S.D. in wonderful setting like last night!
Sergio & MOR — continue your coverage of your music… see you Saturday!

    Peace ya’ll!

  324. I hate to think anyone is feeling sorry for me. I am fine, just uglier than usual.
I plan on coming to Second Wind on Saturday to see MOR. I have a good friend coming in from Hawaii, and she will come too.
Ed, no, I was not able to get enough from the blog to ad to our promo pac. If you have the time, I would appreciate an endorsement from you. HF is struggling for gigs. If anyone has any contacts that they would like to help us with, we would gladly pay a %. I thought Viejas would be all over us…
Dick quit smoking about 4 years ago. He used the gum. I had to give him a little incentive. Use your imagination.
Now that smoking is not a problem, he tastes food better, his facial color is better, has more energy, and gets more sex. Life is so good!
Does anyone know how Dave from DU is doing?

  325. Don’t know how Dave is doing, but he sure looked good on KUSI Sunday morning.
All gigs seem to be slowing down right now. Usually picks up for December, then slows again for the first few months of the new year. I will let you know if I hear of anything though.
Try sending a promo pack to the new bar in El Cajon called The Grand. They sometimes hire for Fridays. Don’t know what they pay but…. might try the Alpine Inn too. They are under new ownership.

  326. Thanks Colleen. I did try the Alpine Inn, but they don’t have enough $. We need at lease $400. I’ll contact the Grand, thanks.
I might have a few people to bring Saturday! What’s the cover?

  327. Ok Shaaron, no problem. Sorry it’s been so long. I can write you something but, well, it’s been so long I don’t remember much about your set. I’m going to need to see you play again. Still need to get over this not-smoking kick before I even consider going to a bar, but, I”m getting close to a place where I can be in that atmosphere. What upcoming SD gigs do you have?

  328. Shaaron — No cover.

  329. Ed, we have the smoke infested Barona on the 28th.
Then on Nov 11, afternoon, we are doing a Vet’s Day thing on the Midway. Tickets are $125, but if you promise to come, I’ll save one of our comps for you.

  330. Hmm, can’t do either of those. I have an event I’m doing for CityBeat on the 12th, which means I’ll be setting up on the 11th. What about after that?

  331. Most of we are doing are private events, weddings and such. I’ll let you know when something comes up.

hi everyone! i missed you!! i was sick for over a week which sucked but one good thing came of it i pretty much quit smoking! i say pretty much because i did cheat alittle on friday when i went to see “MOR” [who by the way were GREAT] but going from almost a pack a day to none except on on friday is pretty good. wish me luck it’s gonna be hard i really enjoyed abusing my body, and lung’s[hee, hee] shaaron i’m so gald your ok! i wish i knew what i know now about what damage you can do wanting to be so tan all those year’s in my youth. it’s now all about lots of sunscreen, and alway’s wearing a hat at the beach! i wish more young girl’s understood that the sun really ruin’s your face, and ages your skin, and you need sunscreen everyday not just when you go to the beach!

  333. the chick Says:

“ED” best of luck with letting go of your evil best friend “mr cig” i know what your going through i just guit alittle over a week ago. i really miss my “lady marlboro” she was alway’s with me spending my hard earned money, alway’s making the flu season alittle more special, giving me that extra rasp in my singing voice. what a gal!! WELL heres to “NO MORE MISTER MARLBORO”

  334. Hey Chick!! I’ve missed you!! Can you believe that?!?!? Hope you are feeling better. Sounds like you had the flu that’s been going around. Best of luck in kicking the cancer stick. I decided 28 years ago to see how long I can go without lighting up. So far… so good. Although that first whiff when somebody lights up around me still smells good. But can’t stand to be around the stale smoke smell that lingers on a person’s clothes, hair, etc. I asked a friend the other day when I was feeling low for a drag off his stick, but he was a good friend and said no. :-)

I too went to see MOR this weekend! We went on Saturday. Sergio told me the place was packed on Friday and it was likewise on Saturday. MOR is still GREAT and the new songs were wonderful too. Shaaron was supposed to show up, but didn’t see her. Guess something came up. She missed a fun time didn’t she?!?!? :-) (Bought 3 T-shirts… so will be “outfitted” for the next UMC!)

Ed! How’s the kicking the habit going? Hope everything is going well. Looking forward to debating who is the best County band come next Sunday! See you there! (Wear your cowboy hat!)

  335. I am so sorry I didn’t make it to see MOR. I had the plans, but I went out to dinner with a large group, and then they all crapped out.
Chick! Congrats! Quitting smoking is a huge deal, good luck. You and Ed can be champs together!
I think HF is going to play at the country contest this Sunday! I don’t have a time yet, but Garrison set it up. We do have some country on our list, and I am really looking forward to playing the Viejas Dreamcatcher stage again!
I’m going to sing “Bobby MaGee”, start it real country, and then rock it out!
